Students to Discuss Railway Crossings American Railway Association Staging Essay Contests Concerned over the increase that took place in 1926, compared with 1925, in the number of highway grade crossing accidents and, believing that more care should be exercised by all those crossing railroad tracks, the American Railway Association today announced plans for a nation-wide essay contest among school and college students with three cash prizes of $250 each, to be awarded the authors of essays containing an outstanding, readily available suggestion for preventing such accidents. One prize of $250 will be awarded by the American Railway Association for the best essay by a grammar student, a similar prize for the best essay by a high school student, and a like amount for the best essay by a college student. Under the rules prescribed by the American Railway Association, the subject of the essay is to be "Cross Crossings Cautiously," and each essay is to be limited to 250 words. The essays must be terse, logical and constructive and must stress the need for greater care in approaching and passing over railroad crossings. The essays are to be sent to J. C. Caviston, secretary of the safety section of the American Railway Association, at 30 Vesey street, New York City, by not later than June 1. Three persons of national reputation, to be selected later, will act as judges. Under the plan, class teachers in both grammar and high schools will select the best essays from their classes and transmit them to their principal, who will then select the best one from that school and send it to the superintendent of schools for the county or an equivalent officer. The county superintendent will then select the best essay written by a grammar student and the best one written by a high school student in his county and will transmit them to the American Railway Association. Colleges may follow the same procedure, except that each college or university, through its proper officer, may select one essay and transmit direct to the American Railway Association. In 1926 there were 5921 highway grade crossing accidents, in which 2482 persons were killed and 6991 injured. In 1925 there were 5479 accidents, in which 2206 persons were killed and 6555 injured. New areas may be inundated, adding millions to the toll of damage. Four Panama canals might have been built with two billion dollars. National highways might have been constructed throughout the country at that cost. One-half of the sum would have made the Mississippi secure against any possibility of deluge in its lowlands. Costly as this experience is proving to be, good will come of it. After such a calamity, nation-wide in its effect, there will be no opposition in congress to any well balanced plan that will hold the river in check, and at the same time improve its navigable qualities. So much for the future. The present is the important consideration today. The American people must come to a more complete realization of the extent of the injury that has been caused by this visitation. While millions have been subscribed in answer to the appeal from the Red Cross, the relief fund by no means is sufficient to the needs. Conceive a mental picture of the distress that would come to any community or district that suddenly found itself under water, with homes destroyed, crops ruined, and all material possessions wiped out; and this wholesale destruction supplemented by the difficulties of transportation and communication, with the prospect of starvation, disease and death itself of scores of thousands of people. Let the happy and contented people of California consider what their own plight would be if they were placed as more than 250,000 residents of the southern states are placed by this overwhelming disaster; and then let them do as they would like to be done by. With the response measured by the Golden Rule, there would be no delay in finding means of succor at a time such as this. "Man's inhumanity to man" should be erased from the records of civilization by the generous impulse of a prosperous nation, anxious to be of practicable service to those whose lives are threatened, whose fortunes have been dissipated, and whose outlook, but for the aid of friendly fellow citizens, would be dark indeed. County May Provide Room for Antiques Historical Society Asks Space in Court House for Relics The board of supervisors will provide at the courthouse a room for the housing of antiques in possession of Orange county residents. If the board acts favorably on a request to be made by a committee appointed at the picnic of old-timers held at the county park Saturday, under the auspices of the Orange County Federation of the Parent-Teacher Association. The attendance at the picnic was not large as was anticipated, due to weather conditions. At a brief executive session following lunch, A. B. Tibbetts of Riverside and George Raymer, secretary of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, made brief addresses, stressing the value of preserving relics of the county. Tibbetts announced that his collection of antiques already had been placed with another community and that it would not be available to this county. According to Raymer, the Riverside man would not reveal the name of the community which is to acquire his valuable collection. The committee appointed to confer with the supervisors with reference to reserving a room at the court house for display of Orange county relics was named by Mrs. J. C. Yorba of Placentia, who officiated as chairman as follows: Mrs. Florence Summers. Fullerton; Mrs. G. E. Straw, Orange; Mrs. G. E. Holmes, Anaheim; Mrs. Yorba, James Rice, Tustin; C. H. Scanans, Yorba Linda; Dr. C. D. Ball, Santa Ana; T. B. Talbert, Huntington Beach; S. M. Davis, Santa Ana; Mrs. A. D. Yost, Iren; Ben Kraemer, Placentia; C. C. Chapman, Fullerton; Mrs. A. V. Kelsey, H. A. Lake, Garden Grove, and Raymer. The committee will report at a called meeting of old-timers when it has completed the work assigned to it. It was pointed out here today that the picnic Saturday was not the annual picnic of Orange county pioneers. The latter event will be held the last Sunday in June. Only through the co-operation of the public and the railroads can a reduction in such accidents be brought about, in view of the fact the complete elimination of highway grade crossings is impossible, not only because of the time that would be involved, but also because of the prohibitive cost, which ultimately falls on the public. Anaheim Calif. European Clearances Can Be Obtained Here Customs clearance for every country in continental Europe can be made right here for the prospective motor tourist. Motorists planning to tour Europe can obtain a tourist's permit good for a year, and in all the countries through the arrangements that have been established between the European nations and this country. Payment of duty at the various borders is also eliminated through this plan. A bond is posted here for motoring throughout Europe and given back to the tourist upon his return to the United States. Motor tourists are lingering longer in Southern California this year, it is indicated by the car shipments being made. In one day recently, 27 automobiles were turned in by visiting motorists for shipment through the forwarding department of the Automobile Club of Southern California. As a service to motorists, this bureau ships cars by rail and water to all parts of the world at wholesale cost prices. The machines are assembled in carload or shipload lots, so that the lowest possible rates can be obtained. Customs clearances for all European countries are made for motor tourists shipping their cars through this department. Southern California officials are planning to send the Trojan baseball team on a trip to Hawaii and Japan at the close of the 1928 season. The trip will be made an annual affair. Remember, when you wash artificial silk or rayon underwear, that it is much weaker when wet. Launder it very carefully in lukewarm water, with soap-suds, or neutral soap. Squeeze the garments—don't rub them—and rinse repeatedly until clean. Rough finger nails or rings tear wet artificial silk very easily. Never use clothespins when hanging these garments up. Just hang them carefully over a line. Iron with a medium-hot iron, never a very hot one.
