Shipping Avocados To Eastern Market State Crop 1,500,000 Pounds Greater Than Last Year Avocados, or calavos, the trade name, are being shipped east in quantity for the first time this year because of a crop of approximately 1,500,000 pounds more than the 1926 bumper crop of 500,000 pounds. The fruit is being packed in freight refrigerator cars with a minimum of 26,000 pounds each. Approximately 80 cars will be packed in this year's crop, it was said. One large packing plant at Los Angeles, a smaller one at Azusa and one at Chula Vista are handling the production of Southern California, according to William McPherson, of Orange, secretary of the California Avocado Association. The great increase in production this year is attributed to the comparatively warm weather during the winter months, according to officials of the avocado industry. The avocado will stand about as much frost as citrus trees, and the frost is conceded not to have materially damaged the citrus crop. Although between one-third and one-half the crop for 1927 will be shipped to eastern markets, it is generally believed that Los Angeles and San Francisco markets are the best. It is thought that this is because westerners have become familiar with the fruit, while easterners still regard it as an expensive luxury. The greatest production of avocados in California at present is found in Orange county, according to surveys. There are 1000 acres of avocado groves in Orange county, of which about 300 acres are producing. The remainder is in young orchards. San Diego county, with about 1500 acres planted, bids fair to lead the state in production as soon as the younger orchards are old enough to produce. There are approximately 5000 acres in all planted in Southern California. The great amount of available land in San Diego and Orange counties promises the establishment of an industry which will rival the orange in Crop Outlook Good In 12 Middle States Prospects for good crops in the 12 states served by the Santa Fe from the Great Lakes to the Pacific and south to the Gulf, improve as spring advances, according to the April bulletin issued by J. F. Jarrell, agricultural manager of the system. "Enough snow and rain fell during the winter to insure abundance of water to start crops in the extensive irrigation sections of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado," says the report. "The moisture situation in California is the most satisfactory in many years. In the first three states named spring farm work is well advanced." Dalrymen, poultry raisers and sheepmen have been making money, the report continues. Beef cattle raisers report a steady improvement. The spread of the Panhandle oil fields in Texas is the sensation of the petroleum industry, states Mr. Jarrell. Radiating from the Borger district, drillers are operating many miles in all directions, mainly toward the north and including territory in northwest Oldahoma, southwest Kansas and southeast Colorado. Kansas has approximately 12,000,000 acres planted to wheat in good condition, with a few exceptions. The volume of foodstuff and farm machinery sold during the first two months of this year was slightly above the corresponding period of 1926. There has been a revival of interest in diversified farming, and an effort by farmers to organize for the orderly growing and marketing of their products. The cotton states from Louisiana to California, hit last year by the slump in the price of the staple, have in mind a greatly reduced acreage. Decreases in retail buying in some lines the first two months of the year is attributed to the unprecedented Christmas trade. In many homes cash was exhausted and credit strained during the holidays, resulting in a slowing down during January and February, the report states. Our idea of one political job not-worth while is the appointment of traffic policemen in Shanghai. Asks Supply Tuberculosis Ladies in Charity Things Need At the annual March 23, of the berculosis Association cisions were made. The children's opened immediately about the middle age operation on a site near Chelsea Eligibility requires any of the following: for tuberculosis underweight; after disposition to tutoring having had more influenza or children who have where there is a berculosis. Approximate number 40; ages 6 to 15 length of stay physical condition per day. Physical corrections tonsils, etc.), must trance. Children should supervision and physician permission on no child who refused on account however, it is on organizations final Indications will be after having been supplied necesarily with requisites, tooth. One sweater or leather shoes (bed slippers) bath robe or kings or socks, night gowns, sleeveless shirts bloomers and mats. The association for lost clothing thing must be child's name. The great amount of available land in San Diego and Orange counties promises the establishment of an industry which will rival the orange industry in prominence in this section, according to predictions made by those interested. To take care of the growth, several packing houses are being contemplated for the territory by the two organizations of avocado growers—the California Avocado Association, an educational and informative organization, and the California Avocado Growers' Exchange, the marketing agent of the industry. Two of these projected packing houses will be located in Orange county, it is thought. One, to cover the southern part of the county, will likely be situated at Tustin. The site of the other, which will care for the production in the northern half of te county, has not been considered. Producers are receiving between 20 and 35 cents per pound for fruit this year, according to growers. With the great number of acres now planted, which will soon be bearing, and the additional number of acres yet to be planted, it is expected that soon the fruit will retail at a very reasonable price. The best variety, of six or eight commercial varieties, according to local growers, is the Fuerte brand, said to be a hybrid between the Mexican small, thin-skinned variety and the Guatemalan large, thick-skinned specimen. The hybrid produces a fruit slightly under one pound in weight and combines the qualities of both parents in its make up. The California Avocado Growers' Exchange organization is made up of nine districts, three of which are wholly or partially in Orange county. Each district elects a director to the board of the exchange. The California Avocado Association is made up of all avocado growers in the state and is not divided into districts. Five directors at large are elected. The principal achievement of the exchange in the marketing of the fruit is the stamping of the word "Calavos" on the choice varieties packed for shipment, it is believed. ARE WE THE GOAT-AGAIN? "The United States," says the Washington Star, "is to be made the 'goat' for the failure of the League of Nations arms conference if France, Italy and the nations allied with them have their way. Declining to accede to the common-sense proposal of President Coolidge that naval limitation be undertaken immediately and without undue reference to land and air strength, California, hit last year by the slump in the price of the staple, have in mind a greatly reduced acreage. Decreases in retail buying in some lines the first two months of the year is attributed to the unprecedented Christmas trade. In many homes cash was exhausted and credit strained during the holidays, resulting in a slowing down during January and February, the report states. Our idea of one political job not worth while is the appointment of traffic policemen in Shanghai. International spying system with headquarters at Geneva, with international agents running over the world to see whether the various nations were doing what they had agreed to. This would undoubtedly result in friction and more harm than good. The plan would take in not only armed forces, but the entire populations, geographical conditions, and the industries of the various nations, some of which could be limited by the international control. As the Star well concludes: "The nations which put forward such a plan may well be suspected of hypocrisy; with having no real desire to reach an arms agreement. It is scarcely less than an insult to the intelligence. Certainly it lacks all-elements of common sense. It might as well have proposed the limitation of male babies to be born." ARE WE THE GOAT AGAIN? "The United States," says the Washington Star, "is to be made the 'goat' for the failure of the League of Nations arms conference if France, Italy and the nations allied with them have their way. Declining to accede to the common-sense proposal of President Coolidge that naval limitation be undertaken immediately and without undue reference to land and air strength, France and Italy continue to persist in their attempts to include in any arms agreement land, sea and air forces, industrial development, geographical and climatic conditions." In the above quoted paragraph the Star has said considerably more than a mouthful. Making Uncle Sam the goat is now one of the world's popular pastimes, and the recreation is being aided and abetted by some of our own people. That is the sad part of it. The American government brought forth the only sensible arms limitation proposal that has been offered this year. It was sensible because it was practical. It was restricted in its scope, a clean-cut proposal that could easily have been acted on. But the fact that it was such a simple proposal made it objectionable to some of the European nations who do not want disarmament unless it is tied up with a lot of political commitments which they believe will give them advantage over the other fellow. Perhaps we ought not be too critical of these nations. They have lived in an atmosphere of fear, intrigue and hatred for so many centuries that it is difficult to make a new start. And it is because of the many political compilations in Europe that general disarmament proposals are bound to fail at this time. Disarmament is going to be a gradual process or there will be no disarmament at all. The American objections to some of the Genevan proposals were neither new nor unexpected. They were objections based on solid reason, and the safeguarding of national interests. The Genevan plan would set up a sort of ANAHEIM GAZETTE Asks Supplies for Tubercular Camp Ladies in Charge Submit List of Things Needed in Work At the annual business meeting, March 23, of the Orange County Tuberculosis Association, the following decisions were made: The children's health camp will be opened immediately after school closes, about the middle of June. Camp will be operated on a preventorium schedule on a site near Orange County park. Eligibility requirements of candidates (any of the following): Potential subject for tuberculosis, malnutrition, underweight, afternoon temperature, predisposition to tuberculosis; on account of having had measles, whooping cough, influenza or communicable diseases; children who have directly contacted, or where there is a family history of tuberculosis. Approximate number to be cared for: 40; ages, 6 to 12; sex, boys and girls; length of stay, until normal-sound physical condition; cost per child, $1 per day. Physical corrections (decayed teeth, tonsils, etc.), must be made before entrance. Children will be under constant supervision of public health nurse and physician. Twenty-four hour supervision on preventorium program. No child who needs this care will be refused on account of inability to pay, however, it is desirable that local organizations finance their own children. Indigents will be paid for by the county, after having been passed as eligible. Supplies necessary (everything must be marked with name of child): Toilet requisites, tooth brush, paste, comb, etc. One sweater or coat, two pair good leather shoes (large enough), one pair bed slippers (substantial), one warm bath robe or kimona, three pair stockings or socks, three pair pajamas or night gowns, three pair track pants and sleeveless shirts (for boys), three pair bloomers and mittles (for girls). The association cannot be responsible for lost clothing or valuables. Everything must be marked plainly with child's name. Every child must be examined and material. Sewing machine. Small bags, gay colors, for hanging at heads of beds for children's individual possessions. Rubber sheets. Mattress protectors, white, quilted. Kitchen utensils, enameled or aluminum. Kitchen towels, dish. Toys, especially balls, bats, etc.; games, playground equipment. Western Auto Co. Holds Spring Sale In the face of an anticipated general raise in the price of tires, the Western Auto Supply Company has this week given out the announcement of a temporary decrease in the price of all tires sold throughout their chain of more than 150 western stores. In making this announcement regarding the new price schedule, J. J. Hunt, local manager, stated that the Western Auto Supply Company will conduct thistwo weeks' new customer drive, during which time it is hoped to add 50,000 new customers to the long list of satisfied users of Western Giant and Wear-well tires. As a special inducement to customers to buy during this spring event, a temporary cut in price has been installed at all Western Auto stores. "This price reduction should be welcome news to auto owners, especially at this time, when it is rumored that tire prices are about to advance," says Jos Hunt. "Right now at the beginning of the touring season when most owners outfit their cars with new tires, these savings are most opportune. Thrifty motorists will no doubt take advantage of the savings offered and buy tires for future use." Last year nearly six million dollars worth of tires were sold by the company. These same popular tires are offered in this timely sale. They are all fresh, new stock, carrying the manufacturer's serial number and backed in every respect by our good as gold guarantee." The spring sale will extend from April 18 to May 2.
