BANK OF ITALY GIVES ADVICE Man Should Save Money Because He Feels He Wants to The Bank of Italy, which has established a branch in this community, is developing the philosophy that a man should not save merely because he fears that he should, but because he feels that he wants to, whether he has to or not. There is a tremendous difference between those two conditions. The growth of the idea of the man wanting to put his money into productive safe-keeping is coincident with the growth of the Bank of Italy. That bank is now the third largest in the country. So there must be something in the idea. This bank has gone against tradition somewhat in endeavoring to substitute the helping hand for the high hat in banking activities. Its officers do not sit embattled from the world in large, ornate private offices or behind platoons of secretaries and other attendants. They are right out in the open, from the president down, ready on call and as easily available to the humblest depositor as they are to the biggest stockholder. The Bank of Italy directly touches the life of every man, woman and child in this community irrespective of whether he or she is a patron of the institution. Its encouragement of agriculture, its part in the financing of industry and its other manifold activities affect each one. Its activities help to shape lives and character almost from the outset, for there is no one too young to be counted among those who come under its helpful influence. The babe in arms may hold a deposit book. Many of them do. The history of the bank is not so much concerned with dividends as it is with development; the material development of the territory in which it operates and the inhabitants thereof. It was founded in 1904 by Mr. A. P. Giannini, a successful retired commission merchant. He felt that then existing banking methods were not sufficiently responsive to public demand. The bank's initial capitalization was $150,000, its quarters humble, and its staff small. From the first, the Bank of Italy was a community enterprise and showed strikingly the effective manner in which the Italian backers had accepted the tenets of Americanization. It adopted a program that combined aggressive progressivism and cautious conservatism, both strong American traits, and its democratic atmosphere was more American, perhaps, than some of its rivals in the same field who claimed to have been rooted to the soil. It promoted the idea of intensive agriculture, more Italian than American at the time, perhaps, but it quickly made that idea and its ramifications more American than Italian as far as California was concerned. In resources it grew from $285,436 at the end of 1904 to $370,000,000 in 1925, in which year it operated 93 branches throughout the state. The ideas behind it called for greater scope; the democratization of banking methods, school savings, the purchase of reliable, safe, non-speculative development bond issues, and other securities. It then was ready to try intensive cultivation in the banking field, Los Angeles, which had been entered in 1913 with the purchase of the Park bank was the setting for the beginning of this big new move. The first of the major amalgamations in which whole systems were taken over by the Bank of Italy, began with the consolidation of the Bank of America in Los Angeles with the Liberty Bank of San Francisco. The fiscal systems of the Liberty Bank and the Bank of Italy had been connected through the Bancitary Corporation. Previous to the time that the Liberty bank merged with the Los Angeles institution it had operated only in northern California. After this amalgamation the system was developed under the name of the Liberty Bank of America and a number of branches were established in the southern territory and in the San Francisco bay district. The Bank of Italy already had a few branches in Los Angeles. The natural move then, was the amalgamation of the Liberty Bank of America and the Bank of Italy, the greatest and most important move of its kind in American financial history, establishing the pre-eminence of the Bank of Italy in the Southern California field. If there had been any disparity between the two fields of northern and Southern California as far as banking influence was concerned, this amalgamation did much to get rid of it. The south added tremendous financial prestige to its other material achievements and natural endowments. With these amalgamations out of the way, the nationalization of the great system followed, the name under the new order being the "Bank of Italy National Trust and Savings Association." This is the organization, the third largest in the country in the amount of resources and the first in the country in the number of depositors, that has now come into this community to serve it. Mr. Giannini, founder of the bank, has said that the institution shall be operated for the benefit of its customers and stockholders and shall not be used as a means for the personal enrichment of its officers. This policy has been carried out to the letter. Mr. Giannini is frank to say that he received a bigger salary as head of the commission house of L. Scatena & Company than he did when he became president of the Bank of Italy. A policy calling for the rotation of the senior officers of the bank has been put into effect. This clears the way at the top for any man who has the capacity and shows himself equal to the task. It also tends to de-centralize the profits, which now go into the development of the bank and its branches, the betterment of the employees and the material happiness of the stockholders and depositors. Magazine article which says that "the race of tinkers is extinct in America" is way off. Just look at the Constitution! Judge Landell has Busy Day in Court Fines totaling $870 were collected in Justice John Landell's court at San Juan Capistrano Monday, in the heaviest "traffic day" the court has had in several months. Most of the motorists in court were arrested by state traffic officers last Saturday and Sunday nights, as they were going to and from the races at Tia Juana. Among those who added to the fund was Jack Mabee, Santa Ana automobile man, who paid a fine of $100, after pleading guilty to speeding 65 miles an hour over the San Diego highway near El Toro. Mabee was arrested by Officer Ernie Sawyer. Joe Torrillo, 26, who said he was a movie actor from Hollywood, was given a fine of $75 on a charge of speeding 55 miles an hour. Unable to pay the fine, he was brought to the county jail, where he will spend one day for every $3 of the fine, on the court's order. WOMAN wants cooking or housekeeping. 210 E. Cloth-covered seats and cushions should be thoroughly brushed at least once a month. The small particles of dirt and dust that gather on them soon wear holes in the fabric if not removed. The Western Auto Supply Company advises that a round ox-fibre brush be used for this purpose. TIMETABLE A. T. & S. F. By.
