Easter Chapeaus at Enterprise Millinery
With Easter only, a few weeks away, the feminine mind now turns to thoughts of the new hat, and there are so many attractive shapes and colorings to be found at the Enterprise Millinery that whether Milady be maid or matron, she will not find it difficult to get "the right one" for her personality. The crocheted braids direct from Italy, with their new ripple brims, are light weight and smart for Southern wear, whether for traveler or stay-at-home. The colorings are suggestive of springtime, too, soft greens, blues and Tiger rose predominating, but the workmanship and extra fine quality of materials appealed to me most of all. Look in at 275 East Center Street.
It is not necessary to be beautiful if we have the ability of creating an atmosphere of beauty. Every woman can and should look gracious in her home. Here she can design her own background, set her own stage in such a manner as best to display her own style, type, and temperament. Even a homely woman can appear attractive if the stage setting of her home background is arranged with considerable thought. A great French writer once said: "There are no ugly women—there are only those who do not know how to make themselves beautiful." Home is the place where love draws us, where we repose when the day's battles are fought. All else is artificial.

How to Increase the Value of Your Home
If you are building a new home or remodeling an old one for sale, there is nothing that will sell it more quickly than a well-designed, attractive and properly constructed bathroom or kitchen. Aside from the health viewpoint of sanitary from proper installation, there is the joy to the housewife in having the last word in modern plumbing equipment and fixtures. If in doubt, talk over your plumbing troubles with Joe Quast; ask about the acid-proof sinks, and see his fully guaranteed, up-to-the-minute line of porcelain equipment, built-in china bathroom accessories, etc. 246 East Center street. Phone 132.
Will you look like all the rest? All the world of women divides itself into two classes when it comes to clothes—these who are leaders and those who follow. Being a leader looks like extravagance unless you have unlimited means, but it is really the best kind of economy. Because a well chosen new mode lasts as long as the fabric, but the followers' modes are on the way out before their wearers wear them.

New Wall Paper At Spencer's Store
They are showing some of the cutest bedroom wall papers at Spencer's Store this week.
One paper I particularly admire, a Jaspe stripe effect in orchid color with panel border and cut-out baskets. This same design comes in the new sand color—a shade Mr. Spencer tells me is wonderful for a south or east room.
And the new breakfast room patterns are a dream—such tasty and handsome creations that I could hardly resist the temptation to have my own home done over.
The colors in wall paper are much brighter this season—to match the new spring dresses, I imagine. 166 West Center Street.

What is the compose costume? Three or four shades of the same color blended together in one frock, the darkest shade always being at the bottom. This requires art, and the amateur dressmaker who has a flair for the artistic, will enjoy making the Spring wardrobe. Colors that contrast are a part of the new mode, and one that makes for charm in the two-piece frock especially. Tiers lend themselves to the compose idea, which is rather a blend of color than just merely a simple harmony.

In making boiled icings for a cake, if it does not seem to be cooked enough after it has been taken from the fire, it can be reheated in the top of a double boiler, even after the syrup has been poured over the egg white.
Rich, heavy foods should be served with lighter, more succulent foods. This evens up the calories and avoids too heavy tax on the digestive system. For example, a light lettuce salad is relished with a heavy meat dish.

24 States Urging Higher Gas Taxes
Approving the gasoline tax as the ideal plan for highway financing, 24 states of the Union, including California, are proposing an increase in the levy, according to the National Automobile Club.
Arizona plans an increase of 1 cent, the present tax being 2 cents. California's plan provides for a 3 cent raise from 2 to 3. Colorado, now has a 2 cent tax, proposes an increase to 3 or 4 cents. Idaho now has a 3 cent tax and plans an increase to 5 cents. Illinois, which has no gasoline tax, proposed a 2 cent levy. Iowa proposed a raise from 2 to 3 cents. Maine plans to raise the present 3 cent tax to 4 or 5 cents, while Maryland with a 2½ cent tax proposes 4½ cents.
In Massachusetts, where no gasoline tax has been levied, a 2 cent tax is planned. Michigan, an increase from 2 to 3; Minnesota, from 2 to 3; New Hampshire, from 2 to 3 or 4; New Jersey, with no tax, plans a 2 cent law;
Bill to Abolish Inheritance Tax
There is probably no single factor that has so operated to frighten away desirable citizens and to keep millions of dollars worth of property out of this state as the California inheritance tax. Conversely, Florida's absence of an inheritance tax has attracted persons of wealth to the peninsular state, which has made every effort to lure capital, rather than to bar it out as seems to have been the case here in California.
Many persons admittedly are not legal residents of California because of the state inheritance tax. Only a short time ago wealthy Los Angeles physician died who, although he had maintained his residence in the Southern California city for many years, kept his legal citizenship in Chicago to avoid the inheritance taxes California, otherwise would claim at his death. And it was not more than two or three years ago that when the estate of a pioneer Los Angeles merchant was settled the death dues and administration costs took more than 25 per cent of the total. In other words, over a fourth of what he had earned during his lifetime was forfeited at his death. That is surely putting a high premium on enterprise and industry.
Riverside and other California cities have numerous non-residents who will not become citizens because of the California inheritance tax. Almost any trust officer will substantiate that statement. It is estimated that these permanent non-residents of California have and control not less than two billion dollars which is being kept out of this state by a tax wall. This vast sum not only will not be subject to the California inheritance tax when its owners die, but it is not now subject to annual local tax levies. Nor is it available to build up California industries and to develop the natural resources of this expanding western empire. If this two billions of dollars was brought into California, it would increase the tax base for local purposes by approximately one-third.
This condition can be changed by a modification of the present inheritance tax policy which will tear down the tax barrier barring out this two billions and more of property.
A measure to abolish the state inheritage tax has attracted persons of wealth to the peninsular state, which has made every effort to lure capital, rather than to bar it out as seems to have been the case here in California.
Charles Wakefield Cadman noted American composers and student of Indian folk lore and music, and James Murray, nationally known American baritone, will be featured on the fifth number of the Anaheim Parent-Teacher Association artists' course, to be held in the high school auditorium at 3 o'clock, the same day, classes being excused for the occasion.
Cadman, a California composer, attracted international attention in musical circles recently with the successful presentation by the Chicago Opera Company of his American opera, "The Witch of Salem" and has long been famous for his rendering of native Indian melodies.
Murray brings to the interpretation of Cadman's deeply emotional Indian love songs and to the other selections he will sing at Friday's concert, a voice of rich and vibrant quality that has won him wide recognition on the concert stage.
DELIGHTFUL LUNCHEON
Mrs. Grimshaw was the hostess at a very delightful noon luncheon at her home on Broadway today in honor of Mrs. Amy Saxton Fulton, who is a member of a prominent pioneer family of Anaheim. Her parents came here early in the '70s, and were well known and highly esteemed. Mr. and Mrs. Fulton have lately returned from Japan, where they spent 37 years as missionaries for the benefit of the former's health, and are spending some time in Pasadena before going to Columbus, Ohio, where they have three sons.
The house was beautifully decorated in springtime flowers, the dining-room and table being particularly lovely. The color scheme of pale yellow, which is a favorite shade of the Japanese, being carried out in freshias and brodia. The decorations were the work of Miss Alice Grimshaw, and were beautiful and artistic. The march to the dining-room
from 2 to 3. Colorado, which now has a 2 cent tax, proposes an increase to 3 or 4 cents. Idaho now has a 2 cent tax and plans an increase to 5 cents.
In Massachusetts, where no gasoline tax has been levied, a 2 cent tax is planned. Michigan, an increase from 2 to 3; Minnesota, from 2 to 3; New Hampshire, from 2 to 3 or 4; New Jersey, with no tax, plans a 2 cent law; New York has no gasoline tax at the present time, but Governor Smith has had a 2 cent bill introduced into the legislature and is backing it. Proposals in Nevada suggest a raise from 4 to 5 cents, although no definite assurance is given that such a bill will pass. Ohio, with a gas tax of 2 cents, proposes to raise the levy to 3 or 4 cents. In Pennsylvania, Governor Fisher suggests a raise in the gas tax rate of 1 cent from 2 to 3 cents. Rhode Island, with a 1 cent gas tax, proposes an increase from 2 certs, the present rate, to 3 certs, to take effect in 1928.
In Texas a bill is before the legislature to raise the tax from 2 to 3 cents. In Vermont, Governor Weeks in his message to the legislature proposes a raise from 2 to 3 cents, a bill in Washington providing for a similar increase. Both houses of the legislature in West Virginia propose to raise the present tax of 3½ to 5 cents, while in Wyoming, where the present tax is 2½ cents, it is proposed to raise it as least ½ cent.
LARGE PAVING CONTRACT
The board of supervisors on Tuesday awarded contracts to the Griffith Company for paving some twenty miles of roads in the Placentia district. The contract price is $299,000. Work will begin immediately, and contract will be completed in six months.
The price of eggs is said to be lower this spring than for many years, but as yet nobody has offered any legislation for the relief of the American hen.
