Exchange Service Aid to Retailers Important Factor in Maintaining Distribution of Fruit The dealer service department of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, organized in 1915, has been developed until today it ranks as one of the most efficient of its kind. In the field of advertising and merchandising work, and like many exchange activities, serves as a model for others. Not selling the retailer direct, exchange growers and officials early recognized the advantages of furnishing practical service to the man at the end of the distribution line, the one who has the contacts and delivers the goods to the ultimate consumer. Today, as the result of considerable study and research, exchange dealer service is an important factor in maintaining wide distribution and retail effort behind California citrus. Twenty trained service men are in the field the year round, covering personally between 50,000 and 60,000 of the leading retailers each year. Service work is being more and more concentrated in the large consuming centers where the men's efforts will count for most. Placing window displays was originally the service man's principal work. As this exchange department grew more experienced, it was learned that there was unlimited opportunity for practical service along strictly merchandising lines. Service men equipped with facts and figures on the correct way to buy and sell citrus fruits, now make merchandising the important feature of the dealer service operations. Proper fruit display is important and service men are highly trained in that work and know how to use the attractive display material with which they are supplied to make a window or interior store display sell more oranges and lemons. Equally important is the educational or merchandising work which makes real fruit merchants out of those who were formerly content to be simply "storekeepers." Stanley, secretary of the Orange County Farm Bureau, said, in discussing the event, "but since then I have gotten in connection with Forest Supervisor J. B. Elliott, and he promised to have trees ready for planting January 22, even if it were necessary to deliver them by airplane from Placer county. "Our present plans for the celebration of Forestry Day consist of an invitation to the general public to participate in the tree planting. Proceedings will start at 10 o'clock, and all the men should come equipped with a shovel. The planting of the trees will begin promptly, the group being divided into squads, who will work under the direction of such experienced foresters as J. B. Elliott, Bert Stephenson and Robert Northcross. With a good attendance the trees will be planted in a couple of hours. "A bring-your-own basket lunch is suggested for noon at the park picnic ground, which is adjacent to the demonstration plot. Following the luncheon, the party will be shown the seed beds where thousands of pines are being propagated for planting in the burned area next year. But whatever car you drive, you bought for some reason that was satisfactory to yourself. And if it gives you service to suit, you will very likely buy another of the same make. That's pretty true for you and for us. The same will apply to pianos, radios, watches, coffee brand, clothes, shoes, and habits. In order to get you to change your mind, it takes some pretty smart salesmanship. People have been that way for a long time. Why, when forks were first used, folks hesitated. Those that did use forks were called "forclifers," in reproach. Sermons were preached against their use. Universal suffrage had many opponents. There may be some still who would prefer that "Mom" would stay home and knit on election day. We all know that the babies thrive on milk like a hot house tomato. We know that children must have milk. But we hesitate to use a quart a day for ourselves, because we would sooner watch our teeth crumble and our pep vanish than try it. Why? B-e-c-a-u-s-e-! There's no other reason, founded on fact. And we will be nearer the last than the first to use the Pasteurized milk because some doubting Thomas told us an untruth about this perfect food that has had SAFETY added to it. Try a quart of our Pasteurized fresh milk a day for 60 days and if you don't pick up on it... well, we'll leave it to your judgment and forever after hold our peace.
