Predicts Prosperity For Coming Year
Secretary Mellon's Annual Report Extremely Optimistic
In his annual report just made public, Secretary Mellon states that the year 1926 was the greatest business year the United States has experienced since 1919, and he predicts that 1927 will be even more prosperous than the year just closing. The year beginning Saturday will be one of the greatest from a business standpoint in the nation's history, he declares.
"Although business activity has been accelerated," he said, "the credit situation has remained in a healthy condition and unsound expansion has been avoided."
"Corporate profits are running higher than for any previous year since 1919."
"While production has been high, it has been, as a rule, well adjusted to the rate of consumption and has not resulted in a general accumulation of large stocks."
Secretary Mellon's terse summary of economic conditions indicates that America will go into the new year probably under more favorable circumstances than have existed at any time since the World war.
America's ascendancy into world commercial and financial supremacy is not due to any reflex of the war, it was pointed out. Secretary Mellon feels that no war, except one in which vast territories are taken in conquest, benefits a nation economically. The war, on the other hand, was one of tremendous losses for this country, as illustrated by the jump of $25,000,000,000 in the public debt.
While other nations have lagged behind in reconstruction of government and private affairs, the United States was quick to readjust itself to the conditions and to take advantage of the expansion of 1919 to 1926. The world, to a degree, became Americanized, and in seeking to reach the standards of this country, has created a remarkable market for American-made products.
Secretary Mellon's statements regarding business conditions, present and past, duge by a volume Mrs. H. H. Haggarty.
Mrs. George Cole and daughter, Jean, returned Saturday from San Diego, where Mrs. Cole has been with her mother, who was quite ill but is improving.
Mr. and Mrs. Fuller of Santa Ana were Sunday luncheon guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Tice.
Mr. and Mrs. James Cole and sons left Saturday for Calexico to spend the vacation.
Mr. Richey of Lansdowne has bought the C. E. Crumrine house on Highland avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Crumrine have moved into their new home in the Williams tract.
Mrs. Fred Van Loenen entertained Wednesday afternoon in honor of her daughter, Virginia's birthday. Her little guests were Ethel and Elsie Webb, Ida May Hortman, Virginia Orahood, Frank and Laura Hoover, Barbara Bastady, Lorine and Buddy Baxter, Betty Costar and Donald Mann.
In the evening Mrs. Van Loenen again entertained this time with a dinner honoring her husband's birthday, which occurred the day before. Her guests this time were Mr. and Mrs. William Van Loenen, Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Van Loenen, Mrs. Elisie Robinson, Mrs. Baxter and children, Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Hansen and children.
Miss Gertrude Martin is spending her vacation at Santa Barbara.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Ernst and family of Torrance were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. George N. Thornton.
M. N. Boster of Tenth street was taken to Santa Ana hospital for treatment. He is suffering from cancer.
Walter Ingraham was brought home Sunday from the Anaheim Community hospital.
The Christian Endeavor elected officers Saturday night as follows: President, Lewis Robison; vice-president, Molly Wolford; secretary, Esther Hartman; treasurer, Edwin Bastady.
Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Davis and daughters, Ruth and Eleanor, visited relatives in Los Angeles over the week-end.
W. A. Spohn and family, who recently came from Oklahoma, have gone to housekeeping in Miss Zoe Jackson's house on Court street.
An Illinois candidate states that his campaign expenditures were a can of pumpkin and two kegs of barn nails. We thought the days were over when you could "open a key of nails" as a part of your campaign progrande...
Secretary Mellon's statements regarding business conditions, present and future, were well backe dup by a volume of statistics compiled by government agencies that keep fingers on the pulse of business and world conditions. And these were cited as justifying the optimistic predictions for 1927.
Interest and dividend payments averaged $399,274,000 monthly up to October 31, the last official figures available, giving a probable payment for the year of over $4,700,000,000 a remarkable gain of 44½ per cent over 1925.
In view of the fact that security and bond holdings are widely distributed among the people, the vast interest and dividend payments are regarded as of far-reaching significance in contributing to prosperity.
Forty-five insurance companies for the first ten months of the year reported a total in new policies of $9,151,141,000 with close to $11,000,000,000 anticipated for the year. This is a 6½ per cent gain over 1925.
Mail orders, 10-cent store, grocery, cigar, drug and other chain stores have reported increases in sales from 5 to 30 per cent.
Postal receipts were 6 per cent higher; gross earnings of gas and electric companies for the first ten months were $892,990,000, a gain of 6 per cent.
Business failures for ten months showed liabilities of $371,294,000, 10 per cent under 1925.
Banking resources at the close of the year were approximately $64,000,000,000, and savings deposits about $24,000,000,000; a gain of $3,000,000,000 over last year.
These are only a few of the factors that the secretary noted in the general business structure of the country, and which augur well for 1927.
Buena Park Notes
(By MRS. J. P. ROBISON)
Buena Park is enjoying many festivities during the week preceding Christmas. The Woman's Club entertained the children of the club members on Thursday afternoon, last week, with a program and tree with a treat and gift for each child. On Monday evening the Eastern Star enjoyed a family meeting with a 6 o'clock "pot luck" supper, followed by a tree for the children who were afterwards entertained in one of the other rooms, while the lodge met for the first meeting with the new officers presiding. There was a large attendance. The community Christmas tree will be Wednesday evening and the Congregational and Pentacostal Church.
