Ballard Forecasts Prosperous Year General Manager of Edison Company Is Optimistic Any study that is made of our basic industries will show that 1926 has been a year of steady growth and sound prosperity. On every hand we have evidence that this section is sharing in the general-prosperity that prevails in practically all parts of the country, says R. H. Ballard, general manager of the Southern California Edison Company. In making such a statement, I am fortified by the operating reports of the Southern California Edison Company, which, because of the large area covered by our operation and the great diversity of activity among our customers, have become one of the indices used in determining the economic status of this territory. Each month of 1926 has shown an increase over the same month in 1925, the average for the year being 14 per cent. The interesting feature of this situation is that the gain is progressively larger, October being 17 per cent, while the figures for November when completed will probably show a 20 per cent gain. These increases have occurred in all classifications, including domestic lighting, street and highway lighting and industrial, agricultural and railroad power. Increased use of electricity in the home means steady employment by the wage earner with something left over from the pay envelope to buy electrical appliances. Reports from our sales department confirm this statement. A greater use of electricity for street and highway lighting indicates neighborhood prosperity and a desire to brighten up the community with modern lighting equipment, which is recognized as one of the greatest magnets for drawing trade. The steady increase in electricity used by industry is evidence that shops and factories are busy, for the electrical meter is the pulse of all modern activity and tells the true state of affairs long before they appear on the surface. Not only have numerous new factories been added this year, but the long established industries have worked their motors a greater number of hours. Preparations for Arizona Conference Invitations have been received this week by H. E. Wahlberg, county farm advisor, and A. M. Stanley, county farm bureau secretary, to the Western States Regional Farm Bureau Conference, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. February 21, 1927. This will be a four days' conference in which not only general agricultural problems will be discussed, but the attendance will be taken to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado river, where Arizona's river problem will be shown. The invitation included a request for assistance in arranging the program for the convention and asked for suggestions as to speakers. The letters also stated that the meeting will be open to all interested members, and it was suggested in other correspondence that a big delegation of Orange county farmers be arranged. The last conference was held last July in Reno, Nevada, and four carloads of Orange county farm families attended. They reported enjoyment of the entire trip. The referendum stated only one question, "Shall the farm bureau dues be raised from $5 to $10?" But the letter and booklet enclosed with the questionnaire stated the farm bureau situation and ambition in such a manner that the replies to the simple question have interpretive meanings. Aside from the mere decision of the question involved, the referendum reveals the interest in farm bureau activities as many reply with statements which modify or explain their votes. Vincent J. Many of the voters have modified their negative vote with a suggestion that the dues be increased to only $6 or $7.50. Others have strengthened their "yes" vote with the declaration that they would pay any dues asked, and have mentioned some of the activities that have meant benefits to them in excess of all their payments and efforts. The number of replies received to date have exceeded expectations, and the returns have a good geographic distribution, but the officials are anxious to receive a still broader survey. In discussing the referendum yesterday, A. M. Stanley, secretary-manager of the Orange County Farm Bureau, stated: "Personally, I do not care which way the members vote, but I hope they will all send in their reply cards. The determination of our future course rests on these replies, an we want to know how the members feel about the proposals involved. We are holding the votes confidential, but the aggregate results of the referendum will assist a great deal in direction of the organization. We have postponed our annual membership campaign until some time in February to allow ample time for the survey and the necessary arrangements for the campaign which will necessarily be based on the results of the survey. No definite time has been set for closing the referendum, but it is possible that only votes received before January 1 will be counted."
