PIONEER VISITS FRIENDS HERE (Continued from Page One) plause greeted the announcement. As Silkwood was driven up on the track in front of the grandstand after the race by his owner, Willets, the great horse was surrounded by hundreds of enthusiastic friends. A lady placed a wreath of sunflowers about his neck, and many held lumps of sugar in their hand, which he tenderly picked up and eagerly ate. Many times Silkwood went to the half mile post in a minute flat, which few horses have ever done, but he lost time in coming home. On the other hand, Klamath, who was another great horse, loitered on his way to the half mile, breaking badly and falling many lengths behind; but he was a demon in coming home, and usually won the race. On one occasion the sound of a whip was heard several times down the track. “What’s that?” asked one of the men in the judge's stand. “That’s Keating whipping Klamath.” Do You Know: County Auditor Wm. C. Jerome says the Harbor Entrance will cost: “The first year’s tax rate would be 4 cents on each $100 of assessed valuation. The average tax rate for the 20-year period will be .0315 per $100 of assessed valuation. These are based on present valuation.” A five-acre orange grove (worth $15,000) assessed at about $4500 would pay taxes on $4500 at 3.15-100 per $100, or actually $1.41¾ a year. The average annual tax on a $3000 home; that is, a house and lot worth $3000 and assessed at about $900, A five-acre orange grove (worth $15,000) assessed at about $4500 would pay taxes on $4500 at 3.15-100 per $100, or actually $1.41¾ a year. On no was annion his way badly and but he was and usually occasion the hard several of the men Klamath." SAID CASH HARVEY, as he looked in that direction. "Klamath is acting up a bit and Keating is whipping him." Klamath was racing against W. Wood and Our Dick that day. They were the three fastest trotters in the west. Pleasants sent them off at a fair start, but Klamath went off his feet and broke badly. Keating applied the whip again and again, but Klamath was intractable and at the half mile was 15 lengths behind. "I'll bet $5 Klamath wins the heat," said Charlie Durfee, in the judges' stand. There were no takers, for men had seen Klamath turn the trick before. The beautiful horse settled down as he passed the half mile, and seemed to gain rapidly on the horses ahead of him. Into the back stretch they went like the wind, and coming into the turn Klamath was rapidly closing up the gap. On to the home stretch they came, and at the distance post Klamath had passed W. Wood and was a neck behind Our Dick. He never made better time, and flashed under the wire half a length ahead of the other horse. The incident was called to Judge Pleasants' mind during his visit in town. "Oh, yes, I remember it," he said. "Klamath was full 15 lengths behind at the half mile. He broke badly that day and was far behind, but he won the heat and the race. I remember Durfee's offer to bet. Durfee knew the horse and he knew Koating. Both of them were great drivers. Silkwood and Klamath were two of the greatest horses in the country at the time." Besides the splendid program of harness and running races, there were fine stock and poultry exhibits at the fair. Thousands of people gathered there, and the happy days of the meet are all but forgotten, except when this beloved Pioneer comes to town and brings them up fresh in the mind again. He was the whole thing at track meets and his word was law. Drivers listened to what he had to say, for they knew very well that at their first attempt at jockeying they would be ruled off the track. RABBIT EXHIBITS ATTRACT CROWDS (Continued from Page One) Local Ladies Greet Mrs. Willebrandt Local people attended the luncheon in Los Angeles, some days ago, honoring Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebrandt, assistant attorney general of the United States. Mrs. Willebrandt, in her address, praised the supreme court of the United States, and said it was an institution worthy of the deepest respect of every American. "The men of that court have given up everything in order to devote themselves to the perpetuity of the document upon which all our liberty rests—the Constitution of the United States—and to preserve from the attacks of those who would overthrow all organized government." Mrs. Willebrandt is in charge of prohibition enforcement, and declares that it has not yet been given sufficient test to justify either prohibition or enforcement being called a failure. "Prohibition has not increased corruption and graft," she challenged. "It merely has uncovered the centers where it already existed. The man who accepted petty bribes before prohibition came in has simply raised his price a little. "Tolerance is the first principle of all government. I have no quarrel with those who are convinced that prohibition is wrong. But let them take the proper, honorable, legal steps to have it constitutionally voided, if they disbelieve it, and not use the films excuse that prohibition cannot be enforced as a reason for their violation of this provision of our Constitution, while claiming the protection of all the other provisions." Mrs. Willebrandt believes that the presence of women in political life will be of big assistance in bringing about the honesty, corruption-free government of which they have always dreamed, and that they can best serve by solidarity and organization within their own parties. Mrs. Florence Collins Porter, dean of Republican women of California, was toastmistress and introduced many prominent Republicans, both men and women, all paying a glowing tribute to the honor guest, as she is a California citizen, and as Californians we feel proud of one attaining such a high position in our nation. Mrs. Willebrandt is a former resident of Orange county, having taught school at Buena Park. Attending from Anaheim were Miss E. Kate Rea, Mrs. Clara Walsh, Mrs. Nellie E. Terry and from Buena Park, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Covey. A CONTRAST Two incumbent governors who will retire at the first of the year afford a contrast worthy of mention. One is Governor Richardson of California, with a record of some ten or twelve pardons during his term of four years; the other, Governor Miriam Ferguson of Texas, Western Auto Supply Co.'s RABBIT EXHIBITS ATTRACT CROWDS (Continued from Page One) William Walker, Pomona, third; special buck—Al W.
