Millions Saved to Southern California Taxpayers Profited by the 1926 Income Tax Law More net income was reported for taxation by residents of Southern California during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1926, than for any similar period in the history of the internal revenue bureau, in spite of the fact that nearly 105,000 taxpayers of this district were relieved from making any income tax return whatsoever, due to the operation of the 1926 tax law. Facing a reduction on normal tax rates from 2 per cent to 1½ per cent or a 25 per cent cut from earned income and various other decreases and increases in exemption allowances from $1000 to $1500 in the case of unmarried persons and from $2500 to $3500 in the case of the heads of families. Income tax collections for the fiscal year 1926 were $2,413,577 greater than for the fiscal year 1925, when the latest reduced rates were not in effect. The income tax collections for the fiscal year 1926 in Southern California were $13,343,799 greater than those for 1920, the year in which income tax receipts for the United States as a whole reached their peak. In 1920, full war tax rates were in effect. This amazing showing for the Southern California district indicates that this district continues to grow by leaps and bounds and last year was a record-breaker in Southern California, in point of income earned and reported for taxation. Some of the graphic statistics follow: More than four times as many taxpayers moved into the district during the past year than moved out. The number of corporations in Southern California that made income tax returns during the year ending June 30, 1926, increased 650 over the previous year. Taxpayers who reported incomes of over $25,000 increased 401 in 1926 over 1925*. Taxpayers who reported incomes between $5000 and $25,000 decreased 12,-500. Due to the increase of exemptions allowed, taxpayers reporting incomes under $5000 decreased 95,059. It will therefore be noticed that the 1926 law passed by congress was a great benefit to persons of small incomes. Under the operation of the new law, special taxes have been lifted from 1320 pool and billiard tables in Southern California. Five hundred and sixty-two brokers have been relieved from the payment of special taxes. Special taxes have also been lifted from 3336 automobiles for hire. Tax has been taken off of jewelry, which saves the taxpayers of this district more than a quarter million dollars per year. Thirteen thousand two hundred and fifty-five corporations have been relieved from the payment of capital stock tax amounting to more than $2,000,000 yearsly. Admissions tax has been taken off of all admissions to theaters and other places of entertainment where a charge is made under 75 cents. Stamps are no longer placed on deeds; this alone saves the taxpayers over one-half million dollars per year. The above information will give, in concrete form, the effect in Southern California of the sweeping reductions made through the enactment of the 1926 tax law. The average person over 12 years of age requires about 2700 calories in each day's food. A very active man or boy using a large amount of muscular energy may need as much as 4000. Women seem to need from 2700 to 3300 calories per day. BEEBE, Agent Union Pacific System Tel. 729 Pepper Growers and Buyers Hold Meet The Library building at Garden Grove will be the scene of a very important meeting of pepper growers and buyers on Thursday, October 21, at 2 p.m. This meeting has been called for the purpose of getting some concerted action on the control of pepper weevil. The government entomologists have found out some very interesting things about the control of this insect, and they will be present to give the growers the benefit of their findings. Very little can be accomplished by one or two growers in combatting a pest of this kind, but if every one in the district will co-operate, then the chances of control are much greater. A complete plan of campaign will be mapped out at this meeting, so that it is essential that a large number of growers attend. TIMETABLE A. T. & S. F. By.
