California Forests Things of Beauty And Yet Many of Them Are in Constant Danger From Fire The sheer beauty of California's magnificent forests, ranging from the canyons filled with spreading live oaks to the meadows of giant sequoias or the mountain sides of pine, fir and cedar, is something that anyone can appreciate. And the pitiful ugliness of mountain or mesa or arroyo that has been swept by fire—the blackened corpses of once lovely trees telling mutely a tale of the tragedy—is likewise as obvious to all. He who rides may read the message of the fire-swept areas: "Save our forests!" That the prevention of destructive forest fires is not alone a move to preserve the beauty of the wooded areas, but also is a vital economic necessity, is a point that many have previously not understood. They have not realized that deforested areas are subject to costly erosion of soil—that many a rich agricultural land has been made a desert, many a navigable harbor or river made a useless silt sink, all due to the loss of trees by fire. Joining with the government and other agencies in making plain the disastrous results of forest fires, many public-spirited corporations have lent the powerful aid of their advertising campaigns in a drive against carelessness; in series of educational expositions of what lost forests really mean. Among such corporations, it may be mentioned that the Richfield Oil Company, for several years an active participant in the "Save Our Forests" propaganda, again this year has entered into the fight. Utilizing space normally devoted to advertising, that company has carried the "Be Careful" message graphically in picture and words through newspapers in practically every city and town in California. Let us hope that these ads will have a wide reading. Let us trust, also, that the recent scare, when the well-loved big trees of Sequoia national forest were threatened, will also bear fruit. Let us all get together to eliminate TRY TO PROTECT FISH BY SHOCK If it is possible to shock a fish, the University of Washington college of fisheries plans to make it a regular practice and thereby save millions of young fish from going to early graves via the irrigation ditch. Experiments are being conducted to determine if electric screens cannot be installed in the ditches as a warning to new born fish to "stop, look and listen" when they receive the preliminary tingles. The theory is that the young salmon, trout or other fish bent on exploring the irrigation ditches will turn back when it comes in contact with the charged screen. Many fish which swim into the ditches never find their way back and usually perish high and dry when the water is distributed over the land. "We are anxious to prove definitely whether this method can be used successfully," said Dean John N. Cobb of the University of Washington college of fisheries. "If it can, it will mean solution of one of our greatest problems and will be of immeasurable benefit to the fishing industry. One difference between a man and a woman is that the latter talks about her mistakes, the former keeps quiet. It takes three generations to make a gentleman, and even then it takes an effort of will to keep his feet off the table. thieves sawed the connections away with a hack saw and loaded it on a truck parked on a side street. The local residents are praying that the authorities will see fit to slow traffic down at the center of town. Every day the corner of Walker and Lincoln is the scene of narrow escapes from serious wrecks. School will soon commence, and that will bring on the added danger of school children crossing the street. ORDINANCE NO. 491 Cypress Notes (By W. C. MILLER) The vote of the Cypress precinct was very light, there being 288 registrations and only 105 voted. The only offices that there was any interest manifested in were the offices of sheriff and constable. Two weeks before the election Jernigan appeared to have the precinct solidly, but in the last week Jackson gained a lot of ground, and the final vote was Jackson 37, Jernigan 67. There had been considerable campaign literature circulated as to the two leading candidates for constable, and there was some interest in this office. At one time it appeared that Heffner would carry the precinct by a heavy majority, but the final count found he and Marion with honors even, with 34 votes each, with Choate polling 26. Sleeper ran away from Crooke, with 80 to 18. Thomas and Ames were high on the superior court judgments, with 58 and 59 respectively; Allen counted 34 and Nelson 21. Hartranft bested Ball 33 to 19. Young held the advantage of one vote over Richardson. The school board has at last let the contract for the addition to the school. All bids were too high, so a few of the features of the building had to be eliminated. There were no changes in the general plans. The contractors will be on the ground tomorrow morning to lay out the building, and work will be rushed as rapidly as possible. The Pan Gas Company has been giving the Cypress Garage a coat of paint. The garage looks very spic and span in its new coat. Joe Childers has installed a trihammer in his blacksmith shop. Joe can handle any and all kinds of work now. Merton Penhall, Mervin La Rue, Earl Smith, Nelson Fitzgerald and Hugh La Rue were introduced into the mysteries of the Long Beach Pyramid of Selots Monday evening. They claim that the pink coloring of their noses was caused from exterior application of liquid, instead of interior. Merv La Rue and Smith were made to act as some beach beauties' flery steeds in the parade that preceded the initiation, and both have been a bit wild ever since. They claim that the pink coloring of their noses was caused from exterior application of liquid, instead of interior. Merv La Rue and Smith were made to act as some beach beauties' fiery steeds in the parade that preceded the initiation, and both have been a bit wild ever since. Mrs. May Whitacre entertained about thirty at the G. G. Priddy home Saturday evening, the affair being in honor of her husband, Emit Whitacre, and Mrs. Mervin La Rue, whose birthdays fell on that date. Games and music made a very pleasant evening. Mrs. Whitacre's orchestra was present and aided much in the entertainment. Light refreshments were served at a late hour. A great punch bowl was the center of attraction in the refreshment line. Miss Fay Burr, candidate for the dahlia queen at the Buena Park show, has been canvassing her Cypress friends for votes the past week. Buena Park is full of queenly candidates and the competition is very keen. Miss Burr is one of the leading candidates, and her Cypress friends, especially young Mr. Barnett, hope that she will be successful in being crowned queen. Little Eleanor Miller had the misfortune of running a rusty nail in her foot Tuesday. The little one has not been able to bear her weight on the foot, but there does not appear to be any serious complications. W. C. Miller, master of Buena Park lodge, F. A. M., attended the conferring of the third degree at Garden Grove lodge Monday evening. The Garden Grove boys, under the able leadership of Dick Hester, have established a wonderful little Masonic home and are progressing rapidly. G. G. Priddy is erecting a five-room modern stucco residence on Walker, just north of the Pacific Electric tracks. There will be a poultry plant in connection that will take care of 500 chickens. A seven and a half horsepower motor was stolen from the Steve Luther place some time Tuesday evening.
