Judge Curtis Issues Appeal to People
Demands Revision of Present Criminal Code of State
Firing a broadside into the decayed wall of criminal procedure and urging the dire necessity of an entire revision of the present criminal code in order to save judicial procedure, Judge Jesse W. Curtis, associate justice of the supreme court of California, made the following gritting appeal to the people of California, just before he left for the north, after a four days' visit to the Southland for the first time since taking the oath of office.
"Efforts should be made to eliminate delays, require certain proceedings within certain times, instead of permitting innumerable continuances and to speed up appeals by enabling the records to be prepared without delay and at less expense."
Judge Curtis also pointed out that the revision of the present criminal code would secure greater protection for the public without jeopardizing or sacrificing any of the essential safeguards afforded individuals.
Noted California jurists when informed of Judge Curtis's attitude said that the entire country was suffering from antiquated systems of criminal procedure and expressed their gratification of the stand taken by the justice, a native son, in leading the way for California in the revision of the present system.
His entire career has been one of public service. Briefly it is: Elected district attorney of San Bernardino county, 1898; became one of the foremost lawyers in Southern California, 1910; elected judge of the superior court, San Bernardino county, 1914; re-elected in 1920. He served until 1923, when appointed justice of the district court of appeals of the second district; he was elected without opposition, in 1924, to fill the unexpired term ending 1931. He took the oath of office to his present position after appointment by the governor, January 4, 1926.
One of the leading newspapers of California has the following to say about Judge Curtis: "Judge Curtis is

Cypress Notes
(By W. C. MILLER)
About twenty-five couples attended the old-time dance given by the athletic club at the Sholl hall Monday evening. A great good time was had by all present. The dance was not advertised long enough to draw a real crowd, but it was a starter, and the club expects to give another in the near future.
The Frank Noels entertained Monday evening with a dancing party. They had their large supply room beautifully decorated with crepe paper and Japanese lanterns. A wonderful midnight spread brought to a close a most enjoyable evening for about twenty couples. The affair was in honor of Mrs. Noel's birthday. There were 10 candles on the birthday cake.
The W. C. Millers entertained the E. E. Monroes of Los Angeles, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Miller, J. H. Hudson, Mrs. N. M. Jensen of Cypress and Miss Anna May Burgette of Prescott, Ariz., Tuesday evening. Miss Burgette has been spending several weeks in Southern California and was returning to her home Wednesday, so the affair was a sort of farewell party. Light refreshments were served.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Groate of Walla Walla, Wash., were Sunday visitors at the N. M. Jensen home Sunday.
William McClintock has accepted a position with the Venable Trucking Company of Norwalk.
Mrs. W. C. Miller and three children have returned from a ten days' outing at Redondo. W. C. Miller is eating again.
E. P. Smith and Robert Brogleman took in the fights at the Vernon club Tuesday night.
Walter Ledford is driving an Overland coach these days.
L. Pasley and sister, Mrs. Vernon Snell, reached Walla Walla Thursday, making the 1600-mile trip in a Ford sedan in four days.
Jack Luther of Paso Robles is visiting with his brother, Steve Luther.
Steve Luther, brother, Jack, and son, Jack, with W. C. Miller took in the wrestling show in Los Angeles last night.
Hansen and Westminster ball teams conveyed to Anaheim Eucalyptus Water Co., a corporation, by deed recorded in Book 209, page 391, of Deeds, Records of said Orange County, together with fourteen shares of the capital stock of the Anaheim Eucalyptus Water Company, a corporation, appurtenant to the real property hereinbefore described.

Hansen and Westminster ball teams hook up Sunday. Two Cypress players, E. P. Smith, and Merv La Rue, will be in the Westminster lineup.
Some of the costs must be eliminated before the proposed addition to the Cypress school can be started. The school board and the contractors and architect held a conference yesterday afternoon. Plans were formulated which will work out, it is thought.
The oil leasing has come to a standstill, so it is claimed. Every effort is being put forth by the Pitt-Osborn Company to lease certain lands that as yet have not been written. Without these lands the company claims they will not be able to drill, as it would take the heart out of their proposed lease.
A huge bell of dahillas, in the heart of which will be exhibited motion pictures of the state highway from Long Beach to San Diego, especially featuring scenes in Huntington Beach, will be Huntington Beach's exhibit. The contract for the exhibit has been let to a Hollywood firm. The bell will lie on its side, the inside lined with large pink dahillas, shading to a deep red in the center. The outside will be covered with varying shades of yellow dahillas. All the flowers used will be produced by Huntington Beach growers. A ground work of a large variety of dahillas is also provided. At the back of the bell, inside, will be a large plate of ground glass, upon which the motion pictures of the coast highway will be thrown continuously during the fair. Scenes will depict the Hotel Virginia of Long Beach, the Pike, and thence down the coast to Huntington Beach and San Diego.

County Assessor
Do Not Only Get These Figures, But Get These Facts:
Since Jim Sleeper went into the assessor's office, the number of assessments have increased from 13,000 in 1910 to 56,245 in 1926.
The county valuation has increased from Thirty Million Dollars to One Hundred and Seventy Million Dollars.
He has increased the unsecured personal property collections from $14,000 to $1,100,000, and 80 per cent of this increase is paid by the oil companies.
Every mile of county highway has been constructed since he went into office.
All the high school buildings and nearly all of the grammar schools have been built since he became assessor.
The County Hall of Records and the County Jail were built, and without a bond issue.
There are only two counties in the state having a lower tax rate than Orange County.

Does this indicate that Jim Sleeper has been unprogressive?
These improvements could not have been made had not the Assessor made the big interests pay their proportion of the taxes.
Isn't it a reasonable conclusion that an assessor who has been unopposed for twelve years has performed a satisfactory service? Is it good business to dismiss a public official of this character? Would you do so in your own business? Your answer is no. Then—
