Eminent Composer Visits Hollywood
Will Conduct Concerts at Bowl Week of August 10
Eugene Goossens, brilliant young British composer-conductor, and one of the most interesting figures in contemporary music, will be guest conductor in Hollywood Bowl the week of August 10 to 14. During Mr. Goossens' musical career he has attained prominence by starting the Rochester Philharmonic orchestra on its way to success, and guiding it along that pathway for the three years of its existence. He has also acted as guest-conductor with the New York and Boston symphony orchestras, winning unstinted praise from critics and the public. He is but 33 years of age and is the youngest conductor ever engaged by the Hollywood Bowl Association.
Germaine Schnitzer, a pianist of international reputation, will be the soloist in Hollywood Bowl on Thursday evening, August 12. Madame Schnitzer has appeared as soloist with many of the leading symphony orchestras of Europe and America, and has been heard in recital in the world's famous musical centers, including Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Warsaw, Leipzig, Dresden, Stockholm, Prague, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In all of these appearances, Madame Schnitzer has demonstrated her unusual masterly skill and poetic imagination.
In Hollywood Bowl, Madame Schnitzer will play the favorite Tschalkowsky B-minor concerto.

Conquering Limitations
JOHN MERCEREAU'S stage coach lumbered its creaking way from New York to Philadelphia in a day and a half, in 1771, and was considered so fast that it was called "The Flying Machine." When steam came into use, there were the "Comet," the "Thunderbolt" and similar names, suggesting the attainment of the age-old need—speedy messengers.
Man's effort to overcome the limitations of time and distance finally put electricity to work, and it became his swiftest message bearer.
Half a century ago Bell invented the telephone. It is more than a messenger, for it has been developed to carry man's spoken words for great distances with the swiftness of light. Through its wizardry space is conquered with the speed of thought itself.

TO THE VOTERS OF ORANGE COUNTY
The business in the office of the Sheriff of Orange County just at this particular time, owing to the developments in the Patterson murder case and other important criminal matters demanding prompt action, not only of the Sheriff, but the entire office force, will prevent me from making a personal solicitation of the voters as I had expected to do before the close of the campaign.

Orange County just at this particular time, owing to the developments in the Patterson murder case and other important criminal matters demanding prompt action, not only of the Sheriff, but the entire office force, will prevent me from making a personal solicitation of the voters as I had expected to do before the close of the campaign.
As is generally known, I am serving my first term as Sheriff of Orange County, and on that record I solicit re-election. The pleasure of making a personal call on the voters will be denied me on account of important matters requiring immediate attention, as I feel that it is my duty first to attend to the business of the office to which I was selected, rather than take the time to promote a selfish interest.
Therefore, I take this public method of soliciting your vote for sheriff at the coming primary, August 31st, and to ask my friends to interest themselves in my candidacy to the extent that they present my administration and public service in the light of the record made.
I have served the county as sheriff for one term and I solicit that approval from the voters for re-election, which is customary with public officials where the service has been satisfactory, and I trust mine has been of such a character.
Very truly yours,
SAM JERNIGAN
SHERIFF OF ORANGE COUNTY
