A beautiful basket of California's finest oranges was presented to the royal visitors by Mrs. C. C. After a first-hand inspection of the citrus producing sections, the royal party was taken to Riverside, where they were the honor guests at a dinner at the historic Mission Inn. The exchange also had as its guests on this occasion Governor and Mrs. Richardson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Robinson.

In speaking of his organization, Mr. Teague said: "The California Fruit Growers' Exchange is one of the oldest and most successful co-operative organizations in the United States. Starting in 1893, it now has over 11,000 grower members and markets 75 percent of the California production.
"With 50 per cent of its wealth agricultural, the state of California furnishes 23 per cent of the fresh fruit and vegetables shipped in the United States. Citrus fruits travel an average of 2600 miles from producer to consumer," continued Mr. Teague. "It is interesting that the two original naval orange trees introduced into California came to Riverside, and one of them was later transplanted in the courtyard of this inn, where it died in 1925. The other still survives a few blocks away.
"Perhaps I may be permitted to call the attention of our royal guests to the fact that some of the oranges which they inspected this afternoon may be served to them upon their return to their native country," said Mr. Teague, in explaining that California Sunkist oranges find their way to Sweden, and that this year direct shipments have been made from Los Angeles harbor to Stockholm.
In concluding his remarks, Mr. Teague complimented Sweden and the Swedish government for their leadership and promotion of the co-operative movement, which has progressed rapidly in that country.
To Anders Norstrom, accountant for the California Fruit Growers' Exchange, and well known among citrus growers and officials after his 25 years' service, during which time he has seen the co-ing position in the citrus industry, the operative grow to its present command-opportunity to help greet and entertain the crown prince was the event of a lifetime.
Mr. Norstrom, now 60 years of age and a United States citizen for 30 years, was a member of the Swedish royal guard on duty at the royal castle when Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf was born. He remembers well the great celebration following the official signal of 21 guns announcing that the infant was a boy and therefore their next king.
The royal party later motored to Los Angeles for the night. On Thursday the royal pair will be officially welcomed to Los Angeles, when Dr. Robert A. Millikan, winner of the Nobel prize in physics, will greet them in the name of the city at the Shrine auditorium.

Automobile Notes
Where is the motorist to get the increasing sums of money constantly being demanded-in taxes?
President Coolidge recently warned the nation that state governments in 1925 cost twice as much as they did in 1920, and observed that it was very trying for federal officials to save money while there are state officials spending it with increasing speed.
The question is being given serious consideration by automobile owners of California, who are asked to vote an additional $8,000,000 in taxes for gasoline at the coming election, despite the announced $5,000,000 surplus in the treasury for the fiscal year just closed.
There is plenty of food for thought, according to figures obtained from the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Taking the motorists the country over, it is found that in the United States the 1925 gasoline taxes were 83 per cent more than those of 1924, and four and one-half times those of 1923.
Motorists of the nation paid $146,000,000 in gasoline tax last year, about 10 per cent of which was paid by California.
The report of the bureau of industrial technology shows that it costs the average automobile owner more than $700 a year to own and operate a car. These figures were computed from the statistics of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, the motor and accessory manufacturers' associations, tire organizations, insurance companies, labor organizations and gas and oil industry bureaus.
California's bill in this computation is $1,120,000,000.
If these figures are not enough to make the average motorist put on his thinking cap, the recent report of State Controller Riley is a warning. He says the total bonded indebtedness of all forms of government in California is over $609,000,000, an increase of over $76,000,000 over last year. The increase since 1911 is 549 per cent, while the assessed value of non-operative property which is liable for the interest and redemption of bonds increased only 160 per cent. As the motorist shares responsibility for these debts and must pay his part of the interest and principal, it is but natural that mention of more taxes should cause his spine to shimmy.
Fourteen convictions in the courts have been obtained since the statewide drive against substitution of motor oils that has become a practice in California. The last and one of the most important was that of the Pauley Oil Company, said to be operating 56 service stations in Los Angeles county, which received the maximum penalty, a $1500 fine.
Although it would appear that motorists are being imposed upon quite generally by substitution of inferior oil when high grade oil is paid for, the public need not become panicky, according to statements by the Consumers' Protective Bureau, the Automobile Club of Southern California, and other organizations active in the campaign against substitution. A careful check shows that the vast majority of dealers are honest and give the public the brand requested.
One safeguard, it is suggested, is for the motorist to acquire the habit of asking for oil by its brand or trade name. Many motorists merely ask for eastern or western oil. The word eastern may describe oil produced only one mile east of the service station, and for this reason prosecution can not be maintained even though substitution has actually occurred.

Mr. and Mrs. James Watts had as their guests on Sunday Mr. and Mrs. M. Barbour and Mrs. Howard Brundage of Los Angeles and Mrs. Pearl Gill of Artesia.
Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Smith and sons of Long Beach called at the George Martin home on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Parnell of Santa Ana were guests at the W. N. Doss home Sunday.
Miss Erna Bails of Eat Harding was the week-end guest of Misses Marlan and Marjorie Watts.
Mrs. Ellisabeth Milnes of Long Beach and her house guest, Miss Ella Johnson, teacher in the State School for the Blind at Vinton, Iowa, were guests of Mrs. George Martin on Monday.
THE INSECT MENACE
The need of actively waging the war against insect pests was emphasized the other day by Dr. L. O. Howard, chief of the bureau of entomology, United States department of agriculture, who spoke at Oakland to the Pacific division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Said he, in effect:
"The world is becoming vastly overpopulated; yet we allow insects to rob us annually of $2,000,000 in agricultural products. Between one-tenth and one-fifth of everything grown in the soil is annually destroyed by insects. Insects in this country continually nullify the labor of 1,000,000 men."
Here in Orange county we spend a good deal of money fighting orchard pests; it's to be counted as some of the best things we do. Like many another hard fight, the main thing is to get the enemy on the run and keep him going.
It used to be that the next thing after the primary was the November election. But nowadays the next thing after the primary is the Senate investigation.
Lodi, San Joaquin county, is to have a Tokay carnival in September.
