The county board of equalization has under advisement a request by P. A. Stanton, Seal Beach property owner, for a revision of assessments in that city. Stanton objected to what he claimed was a general valuation, amounting to between $300,000 and $4000,000. Assessment figures show a decrease nearly that sum, but Stanton pointed out that this was because the plant of the Los Angeles Gas and Electric Company, which was assessed last year, was this year taxed by the state instead of the county. Assessor James Sleeper, at the hearing, cited valuation-figures covering various properties in Seal Beach to support his contention that his assessment was just and equitable. The board reserved its decision for further investigation of the matter.

Plenty of Water For the Irrigator
There Will Be No Shortage This Season, It Is Reported
Irrigators within the district of the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation Company will not have to cry for irrigation water this summer, for there will be plenty to meet the heaviest demands of the most ardent irrigators, according to Orzo Mansur, secretary of the company.
The company now is distributing 25 heads of water and is serving it on application and within 48 hours after an application is filed, the secretary stated. The cost is $1 an hour for 100 miner's inches.
The life-giving fluid now flowing in the ditches of the company is developed about 50-50 as between gravity flow of the Santa Ana river and pumped water.
Mansur said that the flow of the river at this time is approximately what it was last year, the total being a little in excess of some of the recent dry seasons. The secretary gives credit for the volume of the practice of spreading flood waters on the debris cone in the upper section of the Santa Ana river, pointing out that the company has demonstrated to its satisfaction that the spreading process has been very influential in increasing the summer supply of the product so essential to the prosperity of this section.
In the opinion of Mansur, it will not be necessary this summer to place water on turn. Resort to this method of distribution has not been necessary for the last three summers, it was stated.
Pointing out that the heavy rains of April had been very beneficial and that good soaking of citrus and other lands had relieved early summer irrigation, the secretary said that there should be no occasion for placing the water on turn unless irrigators use more water to maintain

Spends Honeymoon In County Prison
Spending part of his honeymoon in jail is the hard luck that has befallen Arthur Hall, 21, of 929 Coronado street, Long Beach. He entered the Orange county jail Friday afternoon to remain for 10 days, after having been convicted in Justice Kenneth Morrison's court on a charge of speeding and reckless driving.
Hall was accompanied to the jail by his newly acquired wife, who left him in tears, and the big iron door closed on him. She seemed greatly disappointed that rules at the jail prevent her from visiting her husband more often than once a week. She also was saddened when she learned that his meals could not be delivered to him.
Hall told Justice Morrison that he was on his way to Riverside, on June 25, to be married, when he was arrested at Los Alamitos by Officer C. J. Cain. He was charged with speeding 65 miles an hour.
At the time of the arrest, there was a report that a mob gathered and threatened the driver of the machine which so speedily dashed through the town. Hall denied this. He said that the only person he saw was the arresting officer.

Pointing out that the heavy rains of April had been very beneficial and that good soaking of citrus and other lands had relieved early summer irrigation, the secretary said that there should be no occasion for placing the water on turn unless irrigators use more water than is really necessary to maintain their orchards and other crops. He pointed to the tendency, at times, of growers becoming a little alarmed about a shortage of water and doing unnecessary irrigation as a measure of protection against a possible shortage.
The company recently completed well No. 13, but the hoodoo number has nothing to do with the producer, for it is throwing a continuous stream of 261 inches.
The organization now has a well on the drill and it is anticipated that this will be completed within two or three weeks and that it will augment the supply by at least 300 inches.
"We are 'sitting pretty' at this time and should continue in this position throughout the summer," the secretary commented.

Automobile Notes
The Yosemite all-year road from Briceburg to El Portal not only will be officially opened, July 31, but will remain open thereafter, according to positive assurance reaching the Automobile Club of Southern California. This statement was in answer to rumors that the new highway would be closed for a time after the opening ceremonies were completed.
Final arrangements for the dedication of the new water-grade road into Yosemite were made at a joint meeting of the executive and publicity committees. Plans were also completed with Garnet Holme, director of pageants for the national park service, for production of the historical pageant to be staged in Royal Arch Meadows in commemoration of the diamond jubilee of the valley.
The Yosemite all-year road will be made a one-way road July 31 and August 1, according to the plans of the committee, which is headed by Richard Shaffer of Merced. The road will be opened to the official party, headed by Governor Friend W. Richardson, and to the general public at 11 a.m., the morning of July 31, immediately following the dedicatory exercises at Clark's ranch, the summit of the Mariposa-Briceburg section of the new road.
Inbound traffic will be stopped at Mariposa at 1 o'clock. This will permit clearing of the road and the starting of outbound traffic at 3 o'clock. State traffic officers and national park service rangers will police the new road and rigidly enforce traffic regulations agreed upon at the meeting! Similar regulations will apply to traffic over the new road on August 1.
The Yosemite pageant, dedication of the new Yosemite Valley hotel, the state fish hatchery and inter-denominational church sites, and other events are planned to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the valley.
Five o'clock in the afternoon remains the most dangerous hour for motorists.

California Captures Big Treasure Chest
Added More Members to N. E. A. Than Any Other State
The Virginia chest, containing Virginia products, has been won by the California Press Association. California brought in more members to the national organization during the year than any other state. The Virginia chest, a handsome reproduction of a pirate chest, filled with Virginia products, was presented at the convention of the association, which convened in Los Angeles on June 30.
The Virginia chest was especially built at Richmond and is a unique gift. It is of heavy Blue Ridge mountain oak, hand-hewn, and is one of the finest chests of its kind ever built.
The design for the chest was perfected by Fred G. Hagen of Richmond, from sketches of Howard Pyle, the famous artist. The box typified the treasure chest of Blackbeard, who once raided the Virginia coast, and it has been "dug up" by the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, with Virginia's chief treasures, her products, as a special advertising feature at the convention. Hand-wrought iron, forged and worked into shape after the same processes used in colonial days, was used to bind the box, and a colonial lock of ancient pattern closes the box.
Miss Bessie Harris, Richmond artist, with five various kinds of alcohol, benzine, oils and stains, treated the woodwork to give it an ancient appearance which deceives all but experts. On the ends of the chest appear the skull and crossbones, and on its top a wonderful burned in drawing of Captain Blackbeard.
With the chest go Virginia products furnished by every section of Virginia. Through the co-operation of the Virginia State Horticultural Society several apple products are used as part of the prize. Tobacco in its manufactured fire prevention
The Conservation Association of Southern California will hold a fire prevention-water supply conference at Lake Arrowhead, July 21-25, 1926. The whole question of fire prevention and water supply will be discussed by qualified men on the afternoon of July 24.
The Conservation Association, together with other organizations, including the Water Conservation Association and Tri-Counties Reforestation Committee, under the leadership of Francis Cuttle, has been successful in securing an appropriation of $100,000 from the federal government for the construction of fire prevention systems on the four national forests in Southern California. The San Bernardino national forest will probably receive $20,000 of this fund and practically this whole amount has been matched, making a fund of $40,000 to be expended in the near future for the protection of the brush cover on the watershed of the Santa Ana river and tributaries.
Invitations have been sent to interested parties to attend this conference at Arrowhead lodge.
The peak flow of water in the Colorado river was reached June 20.
Tobacco in its manufactured form supplied by several of the leading Virginia companies is included in the gift. Peanuts, cotton and silk products are all part of the prize.
More than 12,000 newspapers were furnished with stories on Virginia products contained in the Virginia chest and in the four minor prizes which were supplied by four Virginia communities. Pages of space were given to Virginia by the National Editorial Association in its bulletin and other publications catering to newspapermen were liberal in printing news of the contest, the standings in which were compiled every month.
Governor Harry Flood Byrd was to have presented the chest, but was unable to attend the convention at this time.
