50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1876
The Republican Club met at Kroeger's hall Wednesday evening. Mr. Cord, delegate from Orange Republican Club, and Mr. Jesse Yarnell, vice-president of the Los Angeles Club, were present. The following gentlemen were nominated as delegates to the Los Angeles central committee: W. R. Olden, J. M. Guinn, George C. Knox, D. E. Miles and James Viles. The club now numbers about forty-five members.
On Saturday evening the Democratic Club held their second meeting at Enterprise hall. Reports of standing committees were delivered by Judge Evey and Messrs. Montgomery, Scott and Lynill, and harmony and enthusiasm prevailed. The meeting adjourned to Saturday evening next, when a constitution and by-laws will be adopted. A full attendance is therefore requested.
Mr. Little has leased the city lot belonging to Mr. Hammes on Los Angeles street. He is erecting a blacksmith shop and is agent for the Goodenough horseshoe. We admire his enterprise and wish him success.

Thirty-two marriage licenses were issued in the county during the month of June.
The rain of Thursday night did no damage to crops in this vicinity. The threshers were at work on Thursday morning.
The Anaheim Literary Club held a meeting on Monday evening and the following officers were elected: W. M. McFadden, president; M. A. Mendelson, vice-president; F. Rimpau, secretary; A. G. Beebe, treasurer; R. M. Barham, sergeant-at-arms.
Following is the list of officers installed in Anaheim lodge No. 199, I. O. O. F., on Tuesday evening: N. G., R. Heinmann; V. G., J. J. Hill; secretary, J. H. Gooch; treasurer, P. C. The straw on Los Angeles street took fire yesterday afternoon, but was extinguished without having to call for the aid of our efficient fire brigade.
Mr. J. E. Bacon of San Juan Capistrano was in town yesterday.
We understand that Mr. S. A. Sheffield is about to erect a fine residence on his lot on Los Angeles street.
Rev. J. M. Allis will not be able to reach Anaheim in time to preach in his church next Sunday. He will, however, occupy the pulpit on the following Sabbath.
Work was commenced yesterday on the Alden fruit drying establishment.
Mr. A. G. Beebe is about to remove to the store on Center street formerly occupied by H. D. Polhemus.
An election will be held in Olive school district on July 24, for the purpose of voting a tax of $1600 to purchase a lot and build a schoolhouse. An election has also been ordered in Centralia school district, on July 31, for the purpose of voting on the question of raising $800 to build a schoolhouse.
Dr. Gulick leaves town this morning to rusticate in the country, and hopes the people's teeth will quit aching until his return.

Ryan, county assessor for the following statement: 1876—Value of land in the county, $5,435,164; value of improvements, $1,328,810; value of town property, $229,330; value of improvements, $221,320; value of real estate in the city of Los Angeles, $3,202,215; value of improvements in the city of Los Angeles, $1,365,834; value of improvements on lands not enumerated above, $61,777; value of personal property in the county, $1,948,-710; value of personal property in the city, $855,462; money, $105,702; grand total, $14,844,322.
The grand total of the assessment roll for 1875 was $15,019,-613. From this total, however, is to be deducted, say, in round numbers, $2,000,000 worth of mortgages and solvent debts, although the amount was some greater, which items have not been assessed this year, leaving a virtual increase of about $2,000,000 in the value of real and personal estate in the city and county for the present fiscal year. Last year the total real estate in the city and county was assessed at $7,748,044, the improvements at $2,557,705; total, $10,305,749. This year the real estate is assessed at $8,956,707, the improvements at $2,915,964, total $11,871,671—an increase in these two values of $1,565,922.
Montgomery Queen's Great Centennial circus will exhibit in Anaheim on Saturday, July 29, on the grounds immediately north of the Bank of America.
M. R. Gaddy returned from the Capistrano Hot Springs on Saturday. He reports the invalids in that section improving in health, and he brings in his own countenance sufficient evidence of the health-giving properties of the waters.
Los Angeles is to have a public library of 2000 volumes.
We understand that M. Calisher will leave for Arizona on Monday.
Bids will be called for soon from contractors wishing to build the bridge over the river at Los Angeles.

THURSDAY, JULY 18, 1901
A foot race between Joe Backs of this city and a San Francisco sprinter named Peter Geary for $25 a side drew a crowd of several hundred persons to Broadway on Saturday afternoon. Herman Dickel and Fritz Yungbluth were selected as judges, and Billy Freise acted as starter. The runners lost no time in starting. Backs led for more than half the distance, when the San Francisco man ran ahead and finished six feet ahead of him, in 10 1-5 seconds. The judges decided that Geary fouled Backs, and declared it no race.
John B. Ramella died from the effects of internal cancer at a Los Angeles hospital on Friday morning, July 12. Deceased was a native of Italy and was in his sixty-fourth year. He came to Anaheim in 1888 and has since resided here. He leaves a widow and three grown children to mourn his loss.
Henry Adams and wife of Tustin mourn the loss of their 10-months-old baby boy, which occurred at Bear Valley on Sunday.
The following newly elected officers of the Odd Fellows lodge were installed on Tuesday evening by D. D. G. M. George H. Riley of Santa Ana: Charles A. Armstrong, N. G.; J. M. Haberfellner, V. G.; Frank S. Gates, secretary; Herman Stern, treasurer; H. A. McWilliams, R. S. N. G.; William Young, L. S. N. G.;

John Johnson, while on the desert two years ago, ran a cactus thorn into his finger which he could not extract, and which has since remained imbedded in the flesh. Some days ago it became so painful that on Tuesday he had Dr. Eddy open the finger and extract it.
John Vinson contemplates leaving this week for Oklahoma, where he expects to take up acreage in the newly opened sections of government land. He has seen in the public prints lately accounts of the thousands of boomers awaiting the order to go in, but is not deterred thereby and will endeavor to select some good land despite the rush.
H. C. Gade made a trip to Strawberry valley last week, moving Professor Zeus and his painting outfit. The professor has been engaged to make a number of sketches of valley scenes, and will be absent some months. Mr. Gade pronounces the valley one of the lovliest spots in California. At present a number of people are camping there.
Jacob Ruff has been engaged during the week as landscape gardener by the landlord, and has been at work in the rear yard, chopping weeds and beautifying the premises.
Miss Lizzie Hartmann of Los Angeles is here on a visit to the Misses Kroeger and will remain for three weeks.
Mrs. Melrose and her daughters, Misses Jessie and Winifred Melrose, are at Long Beach for their summer's outing.
Mrs. Theodore Staley and daughters, Misses Myrtle and Gauldin Staley, are at Long Beach for a short outing.
Mrs. H. Cahen and family leave on the first for Terminal Island to spend the summer.
A. T. Pendleton and family are at Newport Beach for a month's outing.
Mrs. W. J. Smith is enlarging her residence on Orangethorpe avenue.
Otto Rust writes that he will be home from the Pan-American exposition next week.
W. H. Blennerhassett has returned from a trip to the Pan-American exposition.
Climbing rocky and snow-patched heights past forests of great pine trees, cedars, tamarack and aspens holds a thrill for all hardy vacationists, it is suggested in the report, which will soon be available at all offices of the club.
On June 1, 1926, practically 24 per cent of all the counties in the United States were actively engaged in eradicating tuberculosis from cattle within their borders. The estimated cattle population of these 762 counties is 21,000,000.

William Falkenstein made a business trip to Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Herman Stern, Fred Lewis, Ed Zeus, Archer Fay, Rudolph Fossek and Charles Fay comprised a party which drove down to Laguna Beach Saturday night, returning Monday.
George Peters, deputy county recorder, returned to his home in Santa Ana from Whittier on Saturday with his head covered with bandages, the result of his jaw suddenly slipping a cog without any apparent provocation at the dinner table. Peters was eating and, when he opened his mouth, his jaw became dislocated and locked. Two physicians were summoned and he was put under chloroform before they finally succeeded in restoring his face to a natural expression. Peters' sufferings were severe. He will be compelled to wear a close bandage about his jaw for several days.
Cash Harvey is at his home in Santa Ana, where he is lying very ill.
C. C. Chapman is reported to have purchased 275 acres of land in the Jonathan Kraemer tract, from Joseph Messmer of Los Angeles.
Adolph Luedke advertises that he is selling out his stock of watches, clocks, jewelry, etc., at cost and below cost. Call on him for bargains in his line.
Mrs. T. J. Klein and daughters, Misses Fannie and Bessie, of Milwaukee are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weisel.

"INSIDE" INFORMATION
"Carrots will make you beautiful" is indirectly true, because carrots are an excellent source of mineral matter which is used in regulating body processes and building tissues. They are especially rich in calcium and a good source of at least three vitamins.
Have you ever used horseradish in sauce for beets? Try a little next time you serve this vegetable. A bit of ginger also combines well with beets in vinegar.
