Governor Explains Absence at Meeting Tells About Santa Monica Good Roads Convention Governor Richardson, in a formal written statement issued at his office in the State building, San Francisco, told why he did not attend a recent convention in Santa Monica of the "United States Good Roads Association." Governor Richardson's statement, vigorously attacking the status of the good roads organization, is in reply to a story which appeared in a Santa Monica newspaper disclosing what purported to have been a controversy between Governor Richardson and J. A. Rountree, director of the convention, in connection with Governor Richardson's scheduled participation in the convention. Governor Richardson said he resented the unauthorized use of his name in publicity matter sent out by the association, and that so much of this publicity was false that the association is being investigated by the Better Business Bureau. He also said that he did not have time to attend the convention as he had many other "important engagements elsewhere." The governor's statement follows: "The United States Good Roads Association, Incorporated, is a private organization operated by J. A. Rountree, and has no connection with the government. It is not indorsed by the State Automobile Association, the Southern California Auto Club or the State Highway Commission." "So much false publicity was sent out advertising this association's convention at Santa Monica that the Better Business Bureau is investigating with a view to bringing criminal action." "The use of the mails for this advertising also will be investigated." "I kept still before the convention in order not to injure the city of Santa Monica. Secretary McKinney of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce your consent most liberally in advertising the good roads convention at Santa Monica is quite characteristic of him." "At the time I was appointed president of the United States Good Roads Association, or a short time thereafter, I was made a life member, as I presume, a permanent vice-president of that organization, and, as I have not sent in my resignation either as vice-president or as a member of that body, I presume that the use of my name in the letterheads referred to is justified." "I must say, however, that I am absolutely disgusted with the association, and, from my observation of its management in the past five or six years, I have come to the conclusion that the name of 'United States Good Roads Association' is a misnomer, and it should more properly be called the 'United States Rountree Benefit Association,' as I am thoroughly convinced that gentlemen benefit out of this do the national role." "That gentleman never has rendered count or informant and dispossessed for the lie it is about zation should either its management." and has no connection with the government. It is not indorsed by the State Automobile Association, the Southern California Auto Club or the State Highway Commission. "So much false publicity was sent out advertising this association's convention at Santa Monica that the Better Business Bureau is investigating with a view to bringing criminal action. "The use of the mails for this advertising also will be investigated. "I kept still before the convention in order not to injure the city of Santa Monica. Secretary McKinney of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce told me several weeks ago that he knew the city had been buncoed, but requested me to be still until after the convention. "I repeatedly protested to the association against false and misleading stories being sent out containing my name. The fakes are too numerous to mention." One will suffice. "It was a weird story of a great special governors' train coming to California, which I was going to meet at Salt Lake City. Not having been consulted, I wrote requesting the names of the governors and protested against being programmed without advice. I also wrote to every governor in the United States, and found that not one governor, let alone a train load, was coming by Salt Lake City to California via Sacramento. ""This is a sample of the continuous faking done in advertising this convention. "I did not attend the Santa Monica convention, as I had other important engagements, such as the regents' meeting, the Victory highway celebration, take part in by the governors of Nevada; Colorado, Utah and California; Redwood park meeting, and other important dates. "Highway Commissioners Toy, Everding and Edwards, and State Highway Engineer Morton all know the character of this association and declined to attend its session. I declined to appoint delegates. The auto clubs declined to recommend delegates for appointment. F. Jenkins and Mrs. H. H. Knox. More than 150 young women attended the sessions, which were held in the institute grounds in the lower part of beautiful Temescal canyon. The guild convention ended July 4, the day before the opening of the fifth annual Pacific Palisades summer schools and assembly. While at Pacific Palisades the World Wide Guild had opportunity to view the immense developments under way in the new seaside community, which, although less than five years old, now covers an area of three and one-third square miles and has three hundred new homes, more than twenty miles of street paving and facilities in the way of lodges, cabins and dining halls that accommodate 1500 summer visitors. Governor to Speak To Republican Club Governor F. W. Richardson and Robert N. Clarke, candidate for the United States senate, will speak at the meeting of the Young Men's Republican Club at Orange tomorrow night. The meeting is to be held at the American Legion hall, in the basement of the city hall, beginning at 6:30 o'clock. Wallace also declared several of the members had suggested that the club take action at the meeting. Friday evening, in indorsing several candidates for state offices. This question will be taken up at that time, and possibly several of the more important offices will be covered by indorsements. The club is growing, according to the secretary, and several hundred of the county's most energetic young men are expected to be present. Dinner will be served prior to the business session.
