Mrs. Nellie E. Terry, who went East a couple of weeks ago to attend the biennial convention of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, at Atlantic City, as a delegate from the Anaheim Ebell, has been touring certain portions of the East, in company with other Southern California bodies, since the close of the convention. In Washington, Senator Shortridge acted as guide and piloted them about the city. He escorted them to the White House, which they were cordially received by President Coolidge, who posed with the group before the camera. Through the courtesy of The Bulletin we reproduce the picture. The three ladies in the picture are Mrs. Terry, Mrs. Olive C. Good of Santa Paula, and Mrs. H. H. Robinson of Long Beach. Mrs. Terry will be recognized by her friends here. She is standing between the President and Mrs. Good. Senator Shortridge is seen in the background.
The senator piloted them to the capitol, where they lunched in the senate dining hall and attended a session of the senate. They were also received by Vice-President Dawes in his rooms, and the general spent most of the time talking about the wonders of California.
Mrs. Terry visited Philadelphia and New York, then went to Binghamton, N.Y., where she is now visiting friends. Senator Shortridge informed Mrs. Terry that he had recently received a copy of The Gazette containing an editorial endorsing him for re-election to the senate. He was much gratified at the words of commendation in the article. He writes that he will be leaving Washington immediately after the close of congress, and will be in Anaheim to meet his friends in the near future.
Governor Dedicates Truckee Highway
Recalls Struggles of Pioneers Who Blazed Overland Trail
When a great caravan of motor cars headed by Governor Friend W. Richardson and Chairman Harvey M. Toy of the California highway commission passed through Truckee, some days ago, for the dedication of the Truckee River highway, the oldest of the communities' pioneers recalled long lines of ox teams and prairie schooners that blazed this route into California even before the days of the gold rush.
The few minutes in which the modern motor cars were whirled over the new water level highway that connects Truckee with Reno, Nevada, and the East was in marked contrast to the days of struggling when the emigrant trains reached the Dog Valley summit and the Donner grade, barriers which have added sad pages to California history.
Now, 80 years after the Donner tragedy, the Dog Valley summit has been eliminated forever by the road through the canyon and the Donner grade is crossed by a wide, smooth highway on easy grades that most cars take in high gear.
The new canyon highway, officially opened to traffic, is the most important improvement yet completed by California on the route of the old Overland Trail and the most striking feature of the Victory highway since the building of the Wendover cutoff in western Utah.
"When the commission took office, a trip from Los Angeles to the Arizona border at Yuma was a trying and difficult undertaking. Today work is completed or under way or bids have been asked for every mile of unimproved road on this route. A pavement 20 feet wide is being placed across the sand hills, the great barrier to travel into the state in the south, and within a few months the narrow and dangerous plank road will be eliminated.
"The Mecca-Blythe entrance to California has been reduced from a seven-hour road to a comfortable four-hour road. Running time on the Barstow-Needles connection, known as the Santa Fe trail, under maintenance and construction, has been reduced from nine to five hours.
"On the great Redwood highway eight projects have been completed or are under way north of Eureka. Only the other day we celebrated the practical completion of the great Klamath River bridge, linking Oregon and California over this scenic route, and built in part by a direct appropriation approved by this administration. The bridge eliminates the inadequate ferry system which has been a barrier to travel between the states.
"No doubt you are familiar with the remarkable work that has been done on the Pacific highway, in Shasta and Siskiyou counties, where shortening, widening and straightening of this great artery of traffic, the Main Street of the West, is under way.
"And, today, you have viewed what has been done in this beautiful canyon to complete California's gateway to the East. Three grading contracts and five bridge contracts, representing an expenditure of over $900,000, have forever eliminated the Dog Valley summit from distribution car, and still lack of government infrastructure. The original small ponds with which S operations at that place existence and in operation derful trees and shrubbery vide shade for the brook weather, besides making windbreak in winter, were part planted by his own whole institution stands out to a life spent in the seattle sportsmen in an o vide them with additional enjoying the great out-of-the district car command. Mt. Shasta has in the year 1927, be capable about 250,000 brood fish, duction of at least 17,500."

NOTICE TO STOCK THE SAVINGS..
Governor Richardson and Governor James G. Shrugham of Nevada met at the state line at 10 o'clock to exchange greetings and the congratulations of their respective states upon the completion of the joint undertaking.
Surveys for the building of the 19 miles of the California side of the line were authorized by the present highway commission early in 1923, and the first contracts were awarded in January, 1924. Work has been under way continuously ever since and was completed ahead of schedule, despite the many difficulties to be overcome.
As the caravan paused at the state line, Chairman Toy, long an enthusiastic supporter of the canyon route, introduced the two governors; his fellow commissioners, Louis Everding and Nelson T. Edwards; State Highway Engineer R. M. Morton, Division Engineer F. W. Haselwood and others who have been connected with the project.
Speaking to the large gathering present, Govnor Richardson said:
"The present California highway commissioners and highway engineer, appointed by me in January, 1923, assumed office with a free hand regarding the management of the affairs of the highway department, but with the understanding that unobligated construction funds were to be concentrated as far as possible on main trunk highways and interstate connections. Building of unnecessary byroads, while the state's gateways remained impassable, was not to be continued."
"As governor, I am proud of the record the department has made during the past three and a half years. Nearly three hundred miles of new highway have been completed on the state's six major interstate connections at an expenditure of nearly $8,000,000. Many more miles have been improved by maintenance."
What is probably the largest and certainly by far the most interesting fish culture plant in the world, will be in operation at maximum capacity at the foot of snow-clad Mt. Shasta and within a stone's throw of the headwaters of the famous Sacramento river, about August 1, according to announcement made recently by the California fish and game commission. The commission recently allocated a sum of money for the rehabilitation and enlargement of the famous hatchery which has furnished California sportsmen with many millions of trout fry

with which to restock the streams of the state in years past. This work of rehabilitation takes the form of new hatchery buildings, a new and improved food-grinding and food-cooking plant, refrigeration plant, power plant, new walls for all the ponds, new screens and fishways. When completed, Mt. Shasta hatchery will be quite the most imposing effort ever undertaken by any fish culture agency in America if not in the entire world.
When the large force of workmen now employed at Mt. Shasta hatchery have finished their labors, the enlarged plant will be capable of increases of from 5 to 25 per cent in capacity. This season the plant is handling 200,000 brood fish, and will turn over to the fish planters something in the neighborhood of 14,000,000 fry when planting time rolls around this fall.
Four principal varieties of trout are propagated at Mt. Shasta. The Loch Leven and German Brown for the lower altitudes and warmer waters, and the famed California Rainbow and Eastern Brook varieties for the higher altitudes and cold streams. Steelhead trout and Chinook salmon are likewise propagated there, and the resultant fry permitted to run to sea from the hatchery itself.
While the brood fish have run largely to Loch Leven, German Brown and Eastern Brook trout in the past, aizable "herd" of Rainbow brood stock is being built up at Shasta hatchery under the direction of Capt. G. H. Lambson. Captain Lambson has been in charge of the hatchery since 1919, prior to which time he was for many years in the employ of the Federal Bureau of Fisheries, as pilot of a fish distribution car, and still later in charge of the government hatchery at Baird, California. He is personally overseeing the improvements now under way, bringing to the project the results of his many years of training and study.
Mt. Shasta was for many years the home of W. H. Shebley, now chief of the commission's department of fish culture. The original chain of very small ponds with which Shebley began operations at that place are still in existence and in operation. The wonderful trees and shrubbery which provide shade for the brood fish in hot weather, besides making an excellent DELINQUENT NOTICE
