IN THE DAYS OF L Extracts From Files of The Gazette Issued Half a Century Ago. These Files Contain the Only Authentic History of the Citizens of Anaheim and Orange County (Copyright Applied for) 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK SATURDAY, MAY 20, 1876 The Episcopal Mission met yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. B. Pierce was elected treasurer of the mission, vice Mr. G. H. Kellogg, resigned. The committee on plans for the new church reported and presented various designs, out of which one furnished by Mr. De Granges was chosen. A building committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs. W. R. Olden, G. H. Kellogg, W. G. Potter and J. B. Pierce. The advertisement calling for bids is published this morning. The building will cost about $3000 and have a capacity to seat about 150 persons. Miss Annie Bremmerman was the fortunate winner of the slippers at the raffle on Tuesday evening. The slippers were embroidered by the wife of Ignacio Covarrubias, the artist, and are a beautiful piece of workmanship. Messrs. Menzel and Zeyn propose to take a trip to the Warm Springs next week. Mr. Menzel is suffering from consumption. E. W. Champlin arrived on the train last evening. He has been in San Francisco in attendance upon the Grand Lodge of I. O. O. F. Judges Egan and Bacon of San Juan Capistrano were in town yesterday. They give very favorable reports of that section. Mr. John Fischer returned from San Francisco yesterday morning. He will complete the new bank as rapidly as possible. Don Ignacio Alvarado died at San Jose de Palomares valley on the first instant. He was born in Los Angeles in the year 1807. A foot race between the fat folks of Los Angeles against those of Anaheim took place yesterday, to the delight of an admiring crowd. All we have to say is that running is not Joe Breson's strong suit. A prospectus announces that Judge Wiseman, otherwise Broadaxe, and C. Killmer will commence the publication of a weekly paper in Los Angeles about the first of June. It will be entitled "The Tidal Wave." Stand from under. (The paper never appeared. Both men had resided in Anaheim and each could toss a glass of grog across his chest with more grace than any man in town, excepting Dr. Ellis, who held the state record.—Ed.) The line between the Alamitos rancho and the lands of the Land Company will be surveyed next week. We have received a copy of Senator Jones' "silver speech." It makes quite a voluminous book. From George B. Davis, agent of the Alden Dried Fruits at Los Angeles, we have received an invitation to be present at the Alden dinner to be given to members of the press on Sunday next. A representative of The Gazette will certainly be present. A horse which was stolen several months ago was recovered yesterday. It was found in Los Nietos, and had passed through several hands. Mr. John Bush brought a young coyote into town yesterday and presented it to the deputy sheriff. He captured it on his ranch at Upper Santa Ana. It will be added to Kirby's menagerie. A little son of Mr. Farrell, a Los Angeles street contractor, fell under a heavy truck on Monday. One of the wheels passed over his leg, injuring him dangerously. Quite an excitement was created Monday evening by the information that a large bundle of papers saturated with coal oil had been found partly burned in one of the closets of the Planters hotel. It was thought to be the work of an incendiary. The work of completing the Cajon water ditch will be done by contract. It was thought to be the work of an incendiary. The work of completing the Cajon water ditch will be done by contract. At a meeting of the Fourth of July committee, the following officers of the day were chosen: President, Phineas Banning; orator, J. G. Eastman; poet, J. J. Ayers; historians, J. J. Warner, Judge Hayes, Dr. J. P. Widney; reader of declaration, Prof. T. A. Saxon; chaplains, Rev. S. S. Packard and A. W. Edleman. Serious complaints are made by the vineyardists against the hoodlums who make a practice of bathing in the zanjas. If a few of the miscreants are caught and complaint made against them, it may have a tendency to break up the nuisance. In the case of Mendelson vs. Summerfield yesterday at Santa Ana, the defendant was found guilty of misdemeanor. The shipments from the depot this morning were two half barrels wine, one-barrel brandy, 15 pipes wine, 48 bales wool, one box tobacco, 38 bales hay, 22 cases honey, one box eggs, two crates fowls. A preliminary meeting was held at the Masonic hall on Saturday evening and an endeavor will be made to establish a chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Anaheim. A committee was appointed to make the necessary preparations. About twenty couples attended the surprise party at Mr. Hind's residence on Friday evening. We are informed that the dancing party was a complete surprise to the host and family. Several parties were in town from Santa Ana yesterday. They report that signs of progress may be seen in every part of that section. A large amount of hay will be cut there this season. Constable Pullen held an auction sale yesterday and disposed of the jacks taken up for trespass some days ago. Nearly enough was realized from the sale to pay the costs. The Grangers' Association has concluded the purchase of a large portion of the San Joaquin and Santiago ranchos, and will immediately commence colonizing them. Before long the entire tract of beautiful land will be under cultivation. OF LONG AGO Red Half a Century and a Quarter of a Century Authentic History in Print of the Daily Doings Orange County in the Days of the Pioneers. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1901 The eagle will scream in Anaheim the coming Fourth of July. Major Finley yesterday telephoned the committee in charge of the celebration that he would use his influence to have the Orange county battalion, composed of Companies L of Santa Ana, H of Talbert and E of this city parade here. The major long ago promised Captain Ahlborn of Company E that he would be pleased to parade his company in Anaheim the coming Fourth. Since that time he has been elected major of the battalion of the three Orange county companies, and yesterday promised that he, himself, and Company L would be pleased to come, and that he would use his influence to have Company H of Talbert also parade. The committee in charge of the finances yesterday reported collections aggregating upwards of $300, and the work goes bravely on. Anaheim holds the record for monster Fourth of July celebrations in Orange county, and she proposes this year to lay all her previous efforts in the shade. Santa Ana has promised that if Anaheim gets up a celebration, it will call off one scheduled for that place. This is reciprocity; Anaheim had no celebration last year, and all hands went to Santa Ana on the Fourth. Now we expect all the county seat people to be with us on the national holiday; also those from Talbert, Fullerton, Placentia, Buena Park, Orangethorpe and other sections of the county. A meeting of the committee will be held at the armory on Monday evening to make further arrangements. Besides the military parade, there will be a grand free barbecue, beautiful floats, city decorated as never before, bands of music playing, bonfires, fireworks and illumination. All the county is invited. Ed Bustamente came over from Redlands a day or two ago to visit with his folks. Isaac Lyons has been in town during the week from Los Angeles, visiting with his family. Horace Green of Long Beach, accompanied by his wife and two little children, spent a day or two in town during the week, the guests of Mrs. Crist. Miss Ruth Smith is home from Berkeley to spend the summer vacation with her mother on Orangethorpe avenue. Mrs. Henry Kuchel and young son are visiting with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. G. H. Bailey at Phoenix, A. T. Oliver Hill returned on Monday from the session of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows in San Francisco. Oliver reports a way-up time. Orazzi Salvini, a young blacksmith from San Francisco, arrived on Monday to take a position at Charlie Bauer's shop. Senor De la Guerra of Yorba has a field of grain which, previous to the rainstorm of May 1, he contemplated cutting for hay. But it headed out so well he will turn it into grain and go into the market for hay. Napoleon Hart and wife visited the street fair at San Bernardino on Thursday and Friday last. They also visited friends at Colton. They report an enjoyable trip, but found the San Bernardino weather warm. The salary of the Anaheim postoffice has been raised $100 per year, to begin July 1. Mrs. Schoreck is a noted singer, and Anaheimers may have an opportunity of hearing her before she returns to her home in the East. Eubaldo Arballo and Miss Isabel Corona of Yorba were married by Father Dubble at St. Boniface's Catholic church, in this city, on Saturday morning. Arballo had rented a house on the Olinda ranch and had furnished it to the extent of his means, when, as he was leaving the church with his bride, a friend rode up and informed him his house had just burned down. The bride's father is said to have opposed the match, and did not attend the wedding. Gen. E. M. McCook of the United States Army was in town Thursday last as the guest of Erwin Barr, who served under him during the Civil war. General McCook is a sufferer of inflamatory rheumatism and is in California in search of health. He is living in a Los Angeles hotel. The G. A. R. and the Ladies' Relief Corps of Fullerton will observe Decoration Day at the Anaheim cemetery. All old soldiers and ex-Confederates, together with their families; also all school children who can, and will, are invited to be present at the cemetery promptly at 11 a.m., at which time the graves will be decorated. Those who can do so are requested to bring their lunches and remain for the afternoon exercises and get acquainted. At 1 o'clock the bugle will sound the assembly, and an appropriate program will be rendered. Hon. O. Z. Hubbell will deliver the oration, which will be worth hearing. Gen. Ed M. McCook, one of the famous fighting McCooks, will be present and deliver an address. Company E will participate in the ceremonies during the afternoon. It will march from the armory to the cemetery and take part in the exercises. Miss Laura Gade, daughter of H. C. Gade; is attending normal school in Los Angeles, and a few days ago penned a sketch, "The Story of a Pin." When Professor Pierce read it, he pronounced it one of the cleverest compositions that had come under his observation in a long time.
