Automobile Notes Northern California is vying with the southern part of the state in the number of signatures to the initiative petition being circulated by the Automobile Club of Southern California. This is designed to place on the November ballot a measure that will reorganize the state highway system and provide a future plan for financing and construction that the club declares is equitable, economical and progressive. Reports to date show that more than 30,000 have signed the petition in the San Francisco bay district. This is within 6,000 of the number of signers in the Los Angeles district. In all, 75,000 signatures have been affixed. It is believed that the remaining signatures needed will soon be affixed. The measure will then have a place on the ballot at the fall election, and voters of the state will be given opportunity to decide on the state's future policy in highway construction. At the auto club yesterday, officials stated that the law will provide equitable distribution of highway funds in all parts of the state; will not increase taxes, and will place California in the forefront of states in modern and progressive methods in its future highway program. Wawona road into Yosemite National park is now open and in fair condition, reports Superintendent W. B. Lewis to the touring bureau of the automobile club. Repair crews are at work on the road and the opening of the vacation season will see the entire Wawona route, including the roads in Mariposa grove, in first-class condition for motor travel, it is stated. Fifteen to twenty cars per day are now entering the park over this road, and general conditions in the valley are ideal, according to the dispatch. The first outing map for campers, anglers, hunters, golfers and yachtsmen of the state of Washington and British Columbia, Canada, has just been completed and is ready for distribution, according to announcement by the automobile club. This map finishes the gigantic task of denoting all recreational areas of the entire Pacific coast. Weird Story Told Concerning Abbey Deputy County Clerk's English Unintelligible to Witness Court Clerk Earl R. Abbey, of department 1, superior court, is looking for an English tutor, according to a weird story which comes across the raging Santa Ana river. "I certainly must improve my grammar," Abbey admitted during trial of a lawsuit, when Raymond Reyes, Mexican witness, failed to grasp Abbey's recital of the oath. Reyes listened carefully to Abbey, who repeated the oath to him twice. Then Reyes turned blankly to Judge C. E. Beaumont. "I just speaka English," he appealed to the court. Abbey sank limply into his seat and Court Interpreter Charles C. Carillo came forward. Carillo administered the oath in Spanish, but Reyes still looked blank. He again turned to the court. "I no speaka Spanish," he said, "I speaka just English." Reyes was in court to press his suit for $5116 damages against G. W. Sevenson of Riverside, whose car was alleged to have struck Reyes while the latter was standing beside the highway at Atwood. The jury awarded Reyes $300 damages. SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS Hearing in the matter of road district improvement No. 46 was continued to June 1, 1926, at 10 a.m. The county auditor was ordered to draw a warrant for registration clerks, as set forth in certified list presented by the county clerk. This map finishes the gigantic task of denoting all recreational areas of the entire Pacific coast from the Mexican line to the north end of Vancouver Island, a distance of nearly 2000 miles. California and Oregon outing maps were made last year. The work was done by the outing bureau of the automobile club, and the map just completed shows, in addition to all automobile roads, camp sites, where supplies are obtainable, where gasoline and oil may be had, where food and lodging are available, where boats are for rent, where guides, packers and animals are obtainable, post offices, ranches where butter, eggs, etc., may be bought, scenic areas, points of special interest, waterfalls, main trails and game refuges. On the back of the map a general mileage table gives distances between the more important cities and towns of the state of Washington. The golf clubs of British Columbia are named and their locations given, as also are the golf clubs of Washington. There are helpful hints for campers and rules for true sportsmen. A description of the far-famed Pacific highway is given, which extends from Tijuana, Mexico, to Vancouver, B.C. and 350 miles through the state of Washington. Notes of the country traversed are given and also interesting information relative to the Sunset highway, the Spokane district and the coast of Washington and Vancouver Island. Motorizing sportsmen will find the new map a vertitable treasure trove, since it shows the hunting possibilities to include bear, deer, cougar, lynx, moose, caribou and mountain goats. These animals are in the northern territory. Throughout Washington will be found partridge, pheasants, ptarmigan, prairie chicken grouse, sage hen, quail, geese and duck. Innumerable streams and lakes are shown that offer excellent trout fishing. These maps are free to members of the Automobile Club of Southern California and to visiting motorists from all sections of the country. Hearing in the matter of road district improvement No. 46 was continued to June 1, 1926, at 10 a.m. The county auditor was ordered to draw a warrant for registration clerks, as set forth in certified list presented by the county clerk. Oelke of this city is the purchaser of the property, which consists of approximately twenty-two acres of Valencia orange trees. Oelke announced that he would operate the ranch, but would continue to make his home in Anaheim.
