Billy Lake Takes Up Chief Deputy Duties
On Deck at City Hall After Absence of Two Years
William A. Lake on Monday entered upon the duties of chief deputy in the department of public service, succeeding William A. Wallace, for many years an employee of the city rate collection department, who was removed by the city trustees.
Wallace's removal was ordered on the grounds of inefficiency, said Mayor Perry W. Mathis. "Efficiency has been the motto of the city administration, and this applies to every department. Wallace has failed to co-operate with the administration since the adoption of a modern system of bookkeeping in the rate collection department, which was merged in the public service department some time ago," said the mayor, "to secure greater efficiency in the collection of monies due the city, and he has consistently failed to enforce the provisions of the ordinance adopted by the council regulating the system to be used in his department. Politics had no part in his removal."
Wallace was asked to resign and, following his refusal, he was removed by the trustees at whose will he held the office, the mayor stated.
Lake, who succeeds Wallace, has been an employee of the Anaheim Beef Company for some time, and previously worked under Wallace in the rate collection department. He is a competent bookkeeper and is familiar with the system in vogue in the department.
