Automobile Notes The present federal aid highway program contemplates 178,000 miles of hard-surfaced roads, comprising a system which will serve every community of 5000 or more in the United States. According to the engineering department of the National Automobile Club, about 40,000 miles have already been completed, and the remainder is expected to be finished within 15 years. With greatly improved roads connecting all parts of California with Inyo and Mono counties, these districts will be visited by even greater numbers of sportsmen during the coming hunting and fishing seasons. According to reports received by the touring department of the club from numerous resorts in Inyo and Mono counties, trout fishing bids fair to be better than ever this season and reservations for cabins are being made in great numbers. It is advisable to make reservations of this nature early. Fishing licenses may be procured through the touring department of the National Automobile Club, 1305 South Figueroa street, Los Angeles. Motorists running out of gas on the road frequently have trouble in getting gas into the vacuum tank after it has run dry. It is not necessary to refill a vacuum tank manually. If the engine is cranked by hand or with the starter, suction will cause the fuel to flow from the main tank to the vacuum tank. However, the throttle should be closed to prevent the engine sucking air through the carburetor instead of through the vacuum suction pipe. Many extinct volcanoes are visible to motorists over the National Old Trails route, according to information received from the touring department of the club. The most prominent ones are the San Francisco mountains, near Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona, and Mt. Taylor, which can be seen for many miles both east and west of Grants, N. M. Smaller but more striking craters are those near Flagstaff, Ariz., and Albuquerque, N. M. The crater Mrs. J. K. Doyle and daughter, Denver, and Mrs. B. R.
