LOCAL BREVITIES On Monday Mrs. Nellie E. Terry was a guest of the Metro Goldwyn studio in Hollywood at a pre-view presentation of "Ben Hur." Allen Melrose writes from San Francisco that his wife is visiting in Eureka, where her mother has been quite seriously ill. Allen has been keeping bachelor's hall at his home in Marin county, across the bay, and has been having a run on Mulligan stew. He makes the finest Mulligan stew in the country, and friends come from miles about to taste the delicacy of the confection. He and his wife are expected to visit here later on in the year. Otto Des Granges was in town this week from his Fullerton home, meeting with many a handshake from his friends here and hearing the expression of condolences on the passing away of Mrs. Des Granges, which occurred last week. Otto has many old-time friends in this neck of the woods, and comes over occasionally to see them. Mrs. Nellie E. Terry attended a luncheon at the Alexandria hotel in Los Angeles on Friday, at which she occupied a place of honor at the speakers' table. The luncheon was in honor of Miss Bina West, a member of the executive committee of the national Republican party, and state committee-woman from her own state of Michigan. Miss West was the principal speaker. C. Mauerhan was in town on Wednesday last from his orange ranch, east of the city. Mr. Mauerhan has a fine crop of oranges maturing on his trees and states his orchard is looking very fine. He has lived in Southern California since 1875, and has been a subscriber to The Gazette for 40 years. He makes us feel quite chesty when he says that he enjoys every issue of the paper. The latch-string hangs out to our good friend, who will always find a warm welcome in this office. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carroll, their son, Morris, Mrs. J. J. Dwyer and Mrs. Henry Kuchel drove to Long Beach some days ago to call on Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb and Miss Dora Zeyn, who are leaving the beach shortly for Imperial county. They found Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb absent at El Centro, but spent a very enjoyable afternoon with Miss Zeyn. They have disposed of their property at the beach and expect to locate at El Centro, where Mr. Holcomb will engage in business. The supervisor, have fixed Tuesday, April 6, as the date for hearing petition praying for establishment of the Anaheim cemetery district. Ten school districts surrounding and including Anaheim are included within the proposed boundaries. Official notice of the hearing will be found on another page of this paper. Among the delightful social affairs of the week was the dinner party given by Mrs. Nellie E. Terry, on Tuesday evening, at the Oyster Loon cafe, in honor of the Baroness Otillie de Ropp. The table decorations were jonquils and the favors were small baskets decorated with jonquils and filled with candy. Those present were Mrs. Terry, the Baroness de Ropp, Mrs. G. M. Tedrick, Mrs. J. F. Sheridan, Mrs. C. W. Austin, Mrs. H. G. Carlin, Mrs. A. G. Prescott, Miss Frieda Janss and Miss Calnon. Billy Berdrow has presented us with a very fine specimen of avocado, which he obtained at Whittler nursery several days ago. He saw many 2-year-old trees laden with avocados, and the sight was one of the pretties he ever saw. He is interested in the culture of this fruit, and thinks it will one day rank in first importance among all the fruits produced in Southern California. Jake Schumacher is passing around cigars in honor of the arrival of a fine little daughter who made her initial appearance at the sanitarium on Friday last. Mother and child are doing well, and Jake is able to be around and take nourishment. Here's looking at you, Jake, hoping the little one will grow up to be the prettiest girl in town. Puff, puff! Gee, that's a fine cigar! A fine little girl, and a very fine cigar! Call again, Jake. Miss Anna La Borde of San Francisco, who has been the guest of Miss Ruby Casson for some time, returned a few days ago to her home in the North. She was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hessel. Rabbi Trattoner of Los Angeles will be the principal speaker at the Forum Club meeting to be held at White Temple church, March 22. "The Seven Wonders of the Modern World," will be his subject. The banquet will be served at 6:30 o'clock by the Ladies' Aid." Ellis Rhodes, director of the Orange County Choral Union, will assist in the music, and Miss Holly Lash Visey will give a reading. Mr. and Mrs. N. H. Mitchell drove over from Redlands yesterday 40 look over property interests here. They are pioneer residents of Orange county, and Mr. Mitchell was among the first to locate in Anaheim. He knows South-California as few men now living, having driven over every foot of it many times. He states that Anaheim Landing offers more natural advantages for the creation of a harbor than does Newport bay, and that James McFadden devoted much time and money to the creation of a harbor at the latter point, but informed him that the opinion of the best engineering talent was against such a project. If Mitch had a vote in Orange county, he says he would be agin' the bonds.
