IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled From the Files of Former Issues of This Paper 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK February 5th, 1876 Mrs. Kuelp has a vine cutting 22 feet in length, the growth of one year. Work was commenced on the switch for the lumber yard of Messrs. A. Guy Smith & Co. yesterday morning. Dr. J. S. Roberts will take the stand now occupied by H. D. Polhemus and will put in a large stock of stationery and Yankee notions. Fritz Fischer will return to San Francisco today. Mr. H. D. Polhemus intends leaving Anaheim with his family in a short time to take up his residence in San Raphael. Pedro Blanco arrived in Anaheim last night from Arizona. His horse died on the desert and he was obliged to foot his way for a long distance. A Chinese Sunday school was organized in the Presbyterian church last Sunday at $ p.m. D. E. Miles is superintendent and Miss Laura Yocum organist. There were thirty Chinese present and fifteen teachers. This laudable effort to elevate our Celestial sojourners bids fair to be a success. Mr. Fred Hartung is expected to arrive from Washington territory today. Officer Pullen attempted the arrest of a Chinaman who was engaged in some mischief Wednesday night but was in turn captured by the Celestials who held the gallant officer until his prisoner had escaped. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK February 7, 1901 A meeting was held at Santa Ana on Saturday to discuss the matter of controlling the Santa Ana river. Representative citizens were present from Anaheim, Fullerton, Buena Park, Garden Grove, Westlake, Bella and Portlands as well as from Santa Ana. W.T. Clark of Westminster was elected chairman and S. H. Finley secretary. D. S. Wallace explained that the object of the meeting, which was called by the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, was to get an expression of opinion from the residents of the district most affected by the overflow of this river. City Attorney Heathman explained the law under which a protection district could be organized. A bill has recently been introduced in the Legislature having for its purpose the organization of protection districts and the following committee was appointed to ascertain its provision: W. T. Clark, Westminster; W.T. Newland, Bolsa; R.Y.Williams, Santa Ana; J.A. Whitaker, Buena Park; J.J. Hunter and R.Melrose, Anaheim and S.H.Finley, Santa Ana. The young ladies of the T.U.C.-Misses May and Irene Cargill, Melanie Cahen Adella Strrodthoff, Theresa Fay, Lexa Roberts, Polldie Helmann, Hettle Weisel and Mabile Middleham, have issued dainty invitations for a social hop at the Del Campo the evening of the 4th instn. The invitations are written upon a pair of Cinderella-like slippers cut out of cardboard, and laced with late ribbon. Strung upon the ribbon are two miniature hearts cut out of red cardboard. The hop promises to be one of the social events of the season, and the fellow organized by electric officers: Fred G. Athene Hilborn, vice-president; secretary: D. Tressauer. The fellow membership and/or selected: P.E.Littleton, Fred Ahlborn, A.Dickel. The circular stating that establish a puplc and soliciting memoir year. And further elicited to assist by books. They wish to get a good book inside of six months. TAX-BILL Although the quickly ran to heed and their principles advised them tha Mr. Fred Hartung is expected to arrive from Washington territory today. Officer Pullen attempted the arrest of a Chinaman who was engaged in some mischief Wednesday night but was in turn captured by the Celestials who held the gallant officer until his prisoner had made good his escape. Mr. Lynnill has lately fallen heir to about ten or fifteen thousand dollars which will reach him as soon as the various terms of the circumlocation office have been safely made. Mr. Frank Murtha has been appointed agent of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph office in Anaheim. We were the recipient of a very pleasant visit yesterday from Robert Furlong of Orange. He intends starting east on Saturday next to remain until sometime in the fall. Miss Hobert, who has purchased twenty acres in Westminster is putting ten acres in onions. An artesian well is to be sunk on the place soon. So much for Massachusetts girls. Don Juan Forster passed through town yesterday on his way to Santa Margarita. About eight o'clock last evening a man was found dead on Palm street about two hundred yards above the residence of Mr. Theodore Rimpau. The coroner found that the man was named Ascension Velasquez, a native of Lower California, aged about thirty-seven years. He was killed by a wound from a bullet through the chest. No clue was obtained to the murderer. Judge Sepulveda was in town yesterday visiting his old friends. The judge is the pride of our valley and is always welcomed by his old friends and neighbors. Our constable is busy just now with a suit brought before the District court, in the name of Ira W. Felt, against the delinquent stockholders of the defunct Bolsa Chica Wharf and Forwarding Co. for the recovery of $458.75 and costs. The preliminary committee appointed by the Presbyterian Church of Orange to take the matter of erecting a church edifice, made their report on Sunday, which embodied the following points: That the time to build had now come. That a building and finance committee be appointed to secure subscriptions and that as soon as $1,500 are raised, the work be commenced.* The resolutions were unanimously adopted, and the following gentlemen appointed as the Building Committee: Mr. Parker, W. A. McGibbon, Levi Lockhart, Mr. Crowder, Robt. McPherson, S. Armor, A. The young ladies of the T. U. The house and buildings occupied by John Vallance, on the Centinela Ranch, were destroyed by fire on Friday last. Loss about $150,000. Treatments from Anaheim by rail month of January were: 170 581 pounds grain, 470 1 pounds hides, 13.- 846 pounds wine, ise. Total 251- of the in at Copious showers have fallen during the week, bringing up the total amount of precipitation to 10.81 inches. Last year to date according to Mr. Dickel's gauge we had 4.98 inches; the year before up to the 7th of February, 3.35, and the year before that (the season of 1897-98), 3.22 inches. These were three of the dryest seasons in the history of the state. When we consider that the October rains (which are of little value) played no small part in the rainfall of the past seasons, it will be apparent that the seasonal rains to date out-measure the precipitation of the past three years combined. The appearance of the country would indicate as much: Never were there such extensive plantings of barley, beets, and other crops. Stretching from Anaheim to the ocean at Dolson, the country seems to be one vast field of grain, and it is looking remarkably well. In the country towards Los Alamitos thousands of acres have been set to beeches and the La Habra valley is one vast grain field. The pastureage in the hills was never better. Abundant feed or stock has long been around. On January 31 the rainfall according Southern Pacific gauge, amounted to twenty-five every day, the total write (Wednesday afternoon) was continued for six clearings up. Each proposal or bid must be accompanied by a check certified by a responsible bank or bond executed by two good and sufficient sureties, who shall justify in double the amount of said bond, in TAX-BILL OPPOSITION Although the Democratic senators quickly ran to heel when their leaders and their principal newspaper organs advised them that their anti-tax-bill program would make for the annihilation of their party, but they are still inclined to lag in the traces. As matters stand it is frankly adjusted on the hill that the tax-bill could be put over and enacted with very little further delay. At the present time, the possibility which bulked large a little while ago, that Democratic activities might operate to delay the enactment of the bill on March 1st, tax day, has practically disappeared, and in the event that the people get relief in their first tax bill, the disposition will be to forgive everybody and rejoin generally. Still there's one consolation to be found if some of the boys don't learn anything in college nowadays except playing the saxophone and dancing the Charleston. Even these two vices are to be preferred to parlor socialism. Work has been under way for the past month in the resurrection of the seven United States destroyers wrecked at Florida, Santa Barbara County, September 8, 1923.
