Orange Co. Scouts Given High Rank Every Phase of Scout Activity Carried Out During Year By ROLAND E. DYE County Scout Executive The program carried out during the past year by the Orange County Boy Scouts has included every phase of scout activity. Orange county council is given an "A" rating by the national offices on analysis made from monthly reports submitted. Five meetings of courts of honor were held each month for the purpose of awarding badges. County rallies were held each quarter with scouts and parents present from all points in the county. A number of temporary week-end camps were used for the purpose of conducting the educational part of the program. The swimming pool was completed at the permanent summer camp prior to a 10 weeks' camping program. A training course for scoutmasters, assistant scoutmasters and committee men was conducted. The annual field meet was held in Anaheim in March for troops and scouts of the entire county. A four-page magazine is published monthly and goes to all scouts and scout officials. The magazine has been exceedingly helpful in maintaining co-rule. A complete record of advancement is kept at headquarters and is in such shape that the scoutmaster can readily determine the status of every member. The executive and his assistants file daily reports, which analyze the results of their efforts and furnishes the information by which a chart is kept, showing actual contact with every troop and scoutmaster. Regular analysis is made of every troop to determine if proper standards are being maintained. A monthly meeting of scoutmasters is held for both instruction and conference. from now in order to even try to fix its value. More than 2000 boys and men have in the past five years passed through or are actively engaged in the scout program in Orange county. More than 1000 boys come of scout age every year in Orange county and it is the proven ambition of our organization to reach an increasing majority of these boys each year with the scouting program of citizenship training and character development, with each boy thus reached earnestly subscribing to the scout's oath. Anaheim has five scout troops: Masonic Troop No. 1; St. Catherine's Troop No. 2; Knights of Columbus Troop No. 3; Lions Club Troop No. 4; and the Elks Club Troop No. 5, the last just recently being organized. Records Are Made In Citrus Crop What the 1924-25 citrus crop of California lacked in quantity compared to previous years, it more than offset in value. Figures compiled and made public by E. G. Dezell show all records in the history of the industry toppled before the $83,581,263 returned to California for the year ended October 31, last. The delivered value of the crop, Mr. Dezell's report shows, was $122,245,523, including $28,664,260 for freight and refrigeration. "The total orange and grapefruit supply has increased 211 per cent in the last 18 years. Each five years has witnessed a distinct increase in per capita consumption. "In a normal crop year California now supplies 60 per cent of the oranges, 5 per cent of the grapefruit and 75 to 85 per cent of the lemons used in the United States and Canada." Favorable conditions obtained for an ample crop of lemons this past season. The total lemon shipments from California amounted to 10,501 carloads. Shipments show that with even adverse conditions of weather, California will produce sufficient lemons to care for any normal demand in the United States and Canada. The by-product plants handled an equivalent of 1200 cars of unmerchantable value. A first aid contest, which gave about 200 scouts advanced instruction in life saving and first aid treatments, was held. Statistics for the past nine months show that four hundred and twenty-nine advancement badges were awarded as follows: Ninety-five second class badges; 39 first class badges; 295 merit badges; 48 active and semi-active troops reached 1150 boys and officers during this period; troop visitations made by headquarters staff; 102 contacts and meetings with troop committees; 154 council committee meetings held; 53 troop reports received and analyzed; 383 conferences with scoutmasters in the field; 229 conferences with scoutmasters at headquarters; 78 patrol or troop hikes under adult leadership; with 1500 scouts attending; 109 men enrolled at scoutmasters' training course; 75 graduated with 90 per cent attendance and grade; 30 given special diplomas by national headquarters; 12. There will be approximately a 60 percent turnover in our scoutmasters during 1925, which has somewhat slowed up our extension program. Scout plans for the future include: Participation in the older scouts' conference. Special week-end camp activities. Efficiency contest among troops, to cover five months. Camp savings scheme so poor can attend RoKiLl. Scoutmasters' training school. Fifty active troops with 1500 boys and officers. First aid contest. Huge jamboree for benefit of camp building fund. Regular year-around program of activity. More efficient service from headquarters to community, church, home, school, troop, boy. We believe there is danger in trying to spread too far and thinning down the program too much. The measuring rod to evaluate our work will have to be used 10 to 40 years now supplies 60 per cent of the oranges, 5 per cent of the grapefruit and 75 to 85 per cent of the lemons used in the United States and Canada." The latest figures of the United States Department of Agriculture give the value of agricultural crops for the United States as $9,953,000,000 and Los Angeles county alone as $64,780,993.
