CORNER PHILOSOPHY Father's birthstone is a grindstone. Nowadays the rarest work of fiction is the cook book. Even the weather reports at times are nothing but hot air. About one hand of strip poker is all ye modern maid can play. What some people don't know about driving an automobile would fill a hospital. The old idea that feminism hadn't a leg to stand on has been exploded. A good sport is rarely much good for anything else. Live wires and go-getters pile up debts for common plugs to pay. As soon as a man gets old enough to have some sense, folks begin to call him an old fogy. Money can change vulgarity into "charming eccentricity." A smile will go a long, long way. But so will a flivver. A town may be famous for its beautiful women, but the ice man knows better. They say nothing is impossible. Well, try to get a flapper to go for a ride in a buggy. Advice is cheap unless you go to an attorney for it. The only germ carrier that is universally welcome is money. You never miss a reputation till its gone. About the only rights you have nowadays when you cross the street are funeral rites. try to get a flapper to go for a ride in a buggy. Advice is cheap unless you go to an attorney for it. The only germ carrier that is universally welcome is money. You never miss a reputation till its gone. About the only rights you have nowadays when you cross the street are funeral rites. The new saying seems to be "on with the dance—let the ankles and hips be unconfined." Almost every man is a loud dresser when he is looking for his collar button. The poverty of a girl's father has caused many a man to remain a bachelor. Some men are known by their deeds— others by their mortgages. The sauce that is sauce for the goose as well as the gander is "applesauce." What we want is the difference between what we need and what we get. A woman seldom throws at anything until she gets so mad she can't see straight. Some people who remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy don't bother much about the other six. A friend is an acquaintance who never borrowed money from you and never loaned you any. The poorhouses are filled with folks who were willing to try anything once. All men are created equal, but some become more foolish than others. A fortune awaits the man who will invent restaurant grub that tastes like something to eat. There may be time for all things, but the wise man tackles only one thing at a time. One good thing about lawyers is that if one gets you into trouble you can always hire another to get you out. The presence of fingerbowls on the table usually adds about 50 cents to the price of a meal. Too many reformers are more interested in fooling the people than in re-forming them. Everything in this world is balanced. What a baldheaded man saves on hair-cuts he puts into hair tonle. The only thing worse than putting your nose to the grindstone is sticking it into other folks' business. NAVY DAY CELEBRATION Navy Day will be celebrated throughout the United States on Tuesday, October 27, and Orange county will celebrate the event at Newport Beach. Harvey M. Toy, California chairman for Navy Day, has asked for the appointment of a local committee to carry out details of the county celebration. The American Legion and the other veteran organizations will assist in working out the plans for the event, and the Orange County Harbor Chamber of Commerce and other civic bodies will also aid. A request to the navy department to assign a warship to Newport bay for the Navy Day observation will be made immediately by the Harbor Chamber of Commerce. BUY RADIO TUBES DIRECT C. O. CALIFORNIA'S CALL Adverse propaganda cannot check the growth of California. Propaganda cannot make the soil of the Golden State any less fertile nor its mines and oil wells any less productive. The commission directed the Rev. William Keener Towner, secretary and treasurer of the organization, also pastor of the First Baptist church, San Jose, and other officers to appear September 25 and show cause why the company's permit to sell stock should not be revoked. Promotion methods used by the company were improper, according to Deputy Corporation Commissioner Clifford J. MacMillan. One letter, urging purchase of stock at $1 a share, contained the following statement, MacMillan said: "To this party of believers God has committed a great and exceedingly rich gold quartz mining property that has been developed to the point of immediate production, and an equally rich and extensive bed of placer property that is easily accessible and can be worked at a very moderate expense." Fifty per cent of the net profits, the letters read, "have been pledged to the directors to spread the gospel of the kingdom." Another paragraph stated that "this is pre-eminently a spiritual movement, born of prayer and a passion for the kingdom of God." "God has signally approved of this purpose in a series of remarkable providences," the letters continued. "He has guided us in our business transactions so that machinery which would ordinarily cost $25,000 has come to us for $10,600." The West wants men and women of vigor and vision. It wants men and women of positive character, men and women who can do their part in the building of this great empire, not men and women who are tax dodgers or responsibility shirkers. The West looks beyond merely local consideration and prospects to the great Pacific arena within which it will have a prominent part. The call of the West will not go unanswered. An ever increasing number of virile Americans will come to share its glories, and to assist in the building of a future which dazzles with its promise. Baby Prize Won by Santa Ana Child Bearing modestly the distinction of being the first American baby to be morn with the American army of occupation on the Rhine, Mary Catherine Perkins, 5-year-old daughter of Mrs. Carl Perkins, 312 Lacy street, Santa Ana, had further honors conferred on her Sunday at Long Beach, when she was given a special prize on her entry in the baby parade in that city. The float which took the prize was patterned after a battlefield, and on it was Mary Catherine, very sweet and demure, clad as a Red Cross nurse. In her arms she carried a doll dressed as an American soldier, with a bandage around his head, and his arm in a sling. The whole picture was appealing and caused more than one head to be lowered for a moment in memory of those who died across the seas. It was fitting that Mary Catherine should portray such a picture because kingdom of God." "God has signally approved of this purpose in a series of remarkable providences," the letters continued. NEW SILK INDUSTRY California is to have a new silk industry, according to Southern California Business, the official magazine of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Plans are being finished for the establishment at Escondido of a complete plant for the production of raw silk and silk thread. Engineers and experts have shown that raw silk is properly an industry for big operations and scientific practices in Southern California and that under the influence of our congenial climate there can be produced better grades at considerably lower prices than in the Orient. The San Diego County Silk Corporation, which has the first plantation under preliminary development, is financed and sponsored by a group of Escondido bankers and business men. The company will operate a grove of more than 200,000 mulberry trees on a tract of 350 acres, which will also include a laboratory where the hibernation, incubation and hatching of the eggs are managed and where other testing operations in connection with the industry are handled. The cocooneries where the worms are reared and spin their cocoons and the filature for the conversion of the cocoons to raw thread and waste will be handled. Two cotton gins in Blythe, Riverside county, started operations last week. San Jacinto, Riverside county, voted $34,000 in water bonds by a vote of 186 to 16. her father was Capt. Carl Perkins. She was baptized at the Cathedral of Cologne, Germany, which is the third largest in the world. Later, at the age of four months, she made the trip from Paris to London in an airplane. When seven months old she came to America and since then, her mother says, she has lived in nearly every state in the Union. While living in Marion, Ohio, Mary Catherine was in an Armistice Day parade, in which she was carried by the late President Harding. THE BEST MEDICINE IN THE WORLD! THE BEST MEDICINE IN THE WORLD! Such was the indication of a commerce department survey on Canadian wheat imports, covering the period since April, 1924, when a heavier tariff went into effect. Canadian wheat virtually has stopped coming into the United States, only 70,000 bushels being imported so far this year, as compared with 7,327,000 in 1924. Canada's crop has nearly doubled this year, being estimated at 400,000,000 bushels, while this country's crop is expected to be 100,000,000 bushels less than in 1924. Further hardships for American millers are seen in a new move by the Canadian competitors, who have obtained the support of their government for an export tax on wheat which is to be ground in American mills for export to other countries. At present, American millers are importing Canadian wheat without paying duty for the purpose of producing export flour, and the action of the Canadians promise to cut off this supply of material, according to the information received by the commerce department. This action would about cut off American mills from competing with Canadian mills, as the American wheat production is not much larger this year than the normal domestic demand. Such a condition will be likely to send up prices beyond the level contemplated when the tariff was fixed. This situation, however, it was explained, is due to the unusual condition of a bumper Canadian crop and a subnormal crop in the United States, a factor that had not been anticipated, and which would not be likely to be repeated.
