CORNER PHILOSOPHY When Eve bawled, out Adam—that was the first rib roast. Sign on the back of a Ford: "Follow Me, Nickens, I'm Full o' Corn." On only one thing do all women agree; they are all sorry that they are not men. Home is the place that stands in front of the garage. Experience is a good teacher, but she has too many dumb pupils. It's getting so that where there's smoke there are girls. "An open hand greets you," says a resort ad. Sure! But the palm is up. Another thing seldom preserved in alcohol is the peace. While it pays to be honest, you often are a long time collecting. Misery loves company and gets lots of it. The only time a man's nose gets as much attention as a girl's is the hay fever season. All men may be alike, but the present styles show that all women are not. Reforms come from below. No man with four aces howls for a new deal. Gold that glitters makes a fat purse. Another very annoying place to live is just beyond your income. Many a man is a goner before he even has a chance to be a comer. After all, the final test of good manners is matrimony. Improved Form of Contract Offered New Agreement Reached by Walnut Growers' Association Following the ratification by the Anaheim Walnut Growers' Association of a new agreement between the local association and the California Walnut Growers' Association in Los Angeles, and the adoption of a new form of contract between grower members and the local association, Walter Ross, manager of the local organization, is submitting the new contract to members of the local association, as well as to prospective new members, for their signatures. Since the new membership agreement was approved by the board of directors of the Anaheim association a considerable number of the leading growers in this district have signed the new contract, and it is expected that all of them will do so at the first opportunity. It is necessary to have all contracts signed before August 1. The new growers' agreement and contract is regarded by outstanding figures in the co-operative marketing movement in this state as an important milestone in the progress of a system which, in the opinion of national experts, has alone enabled California farmers to obtain a fair return for their crops over a long period of years. Through the new arrangement, into which is incorporated the best ideas of some of the outstanding figures in the co-operative marketing movement, the walnut growers will be given the benefit of the newest and most modern practice in packing and marketing their crops. The former growers' contracts, which were long in use, grew old and out of date. They were not uniform among the various locals throughout the state, and were in many instances a real hindrance both to the local and the central organization. Under the new membership policy which has just been adopted, the contracts between grower and local and between local and central uniforms and they place 929; net to growers in 1923 for 8,047,505 receipts were $21,686.2755,411. These figures record crop, which cuts little Orange county is certainly make a great navel crop of this size 108 per cent larger per cent larger than But what about this? This is the quest most interest in Oregon more and better V-grown than anywhere or elsewhere. The Valencia returns as good as, or ever than that made by the shipping is now full present prices satisfied good for a good but the shipping seas several months. Lemons also have well this season; I market this season for years. The indications are 1925 will bring greater orange and lemon grown California than those year, and this, deserves there have been years f.o.b.cars, have recount sum of $80,000,000 f... Reforms come from below. No man with four aces howls for a new deal. Gold that glitters makes a fat purse. Another very annoying place to live is just beyond your income. Many a man is a goner before he even has a chance to be a comer. After all, the final test of good manners is matrimony. There’s nothing wrong with the weather this year except faulty distribution, the best going west. A good time is like the kingdom of heaven; it is within you. One of the best things to buy on the installment plan is an account at a savings bank. When the money’s gone the fool and his friends are soon parted. Not all of a community’s junk is in the alleys. Some of it is parked on Main street. Fools rush in where angels wouldn’t care to be seen. This darned modern hooch doesn’t make anybody happy except the heirs. Still, if people had no religion they could think up something else to quarrel about. Rouge is not the same as real skin, but it is the next thing to it. Sacrifice is something you make for others—and the hardest thing in the world to get others to make for you. There is plenty of night life in some small town hotels—cockroaches everywhere. It is a frank age. Open diplomacy, open plumbing and no petticoats. The hard part isn’t to make laws respected, but to make respectable laws. The man who goes through life with his nose to the grindstone isn’t always sharp enough to know it. Probably there are women who can keep a secret, but what most of them do is to keep it in circulation. If one hates to see others do as they like, he is on the way to becoming a reformer. Most of the world’s big jobs are held by men who couldn’t make a two-ball combination in a side pocket. To whom nature gives charms she gives a militant modesty to conceal their poverty. The former growers’ contracts, which were long in use, grew old and out of date. They were not uniform among the various locals throughout the state, and were in many instances a real hindrance both to the local and the central organization. Under the new membership policy which has just been adopted, the contracts between grower and local and between local and central are absolutely uniform, and they place everything and everybody upon an equal footing so far as association affairs are concerned. The new membership policy was adopted primarily for the benefit of the loyal association growers. It assures the grower of better results through more uniform business methods. Grower members to whom the new contract and agreement has already been submitted have signed up with hesitancy, and those who have read it are decidedly enthusiastic over it. The opinion seems quite general that other co-operative marketing organizations will shortly find it advisable to adopt some such policy, because it is a decidedly progressive step in a thoroughly established system which is in general favor with California ranchers and fruit growers. Under this system owners of groves just coming into bearing, or legitimate new purchasers of groves, may join local associations, and newly organized locals may join the central association each year between January 1 and August 1. A local or a grower member may legally withdraw from the organization any year between January 1 and March 1, but after doing so cannot again be admitted to membership until two years have elapsed. If a grower member or a local association breaks the contract unlawfully, he or it cannot again be admitted to membership until three years have elapsed. Growers who do not join locals and locals which do not join the central association before August 1, this year, will not have another opportunity to do so until January 1, 1927. The new membership contract is designed to protect the association members against the “in and out” grower who seeks the protecting wing of the association in heavy crop years, when good financial returns are hard to get, and then jumps his contract and refuses to deliver his crop to the association, either wholly or in part, during seasons when the harvest is a trifle short and the speculators offer him a little more money for his crop. Heretofore it has been the custom of co-operative marketing organizations to legally compel crop delivery. Under the new membership policy of the walnut growers, the member who breaks his contract will stand suspended and cannot again be admitted to membership until three years have elapsed. Under this arrangement it is expected that the association will be able to handle the output of fully $87 per cent of the outstanding figures in the co-operative marketing movement, the walnut growers will be given the benefit of the newest and most modern practice in packing and marketing their crops. The resignation of Leo Goepper, Justice of peace of Newport Beach township, was accepted, same to take effect July 1, 1925. Hearing of the petition of H. G. Heisler, et al., to vacate and abandon those certain streets and alleys located in the Fifth Road district was set for July 21, 1925, at 10 a.m. The county auditor was directed to transfer certain amounts from the Auto License Road fund to the Road District Improvement districts. All bids submitted on jail and jail equipment were rejected. The salary of H. E. Zalser, superintendent of the hospital, was fixed at $300 per month, commencing July 1, 1925. The bid of the Southern California Edison Company for furnishing light in the matter of the Laguna Beach Lighting district was rejected. The office of publicity agent was ordered discontinued, commencing July 1, 1925. George C. Sherwood was appointed member of Orange County Board of Education for a term of two years. Deed for right-of-way from B. W. Thorp, et al., in the Third Road district was accepted. Bids for furnishing electric current and lamps and equipment for the Laguna Beach Highway Lighting district will be received up to 10 a.m. July 14, 1925. These figures represent the navel crop, which cuts little figure, so far as Orange county is concerned, but they certainly make a great showing for the navel crop of this season, with returns 108 per cent larger than in 1924 and 47 per cent larger than in 1923. But what about the Valencia crop? This is the question which arouses most interest in Orange county, where more and better Valencia oranges are grown than anywhere else in California or elsewhere. The Valencia returns bid fair to make as good as, or even a better showing than that made by the navels. Valencin shipping is now fully under way, with prices satisfactory, and indications good for a good market through-out the shipping season, which will last several months. Lemons also have done wonderfully well this season; in fact, the lemon market this season has been the best for years. The indications are that the year of 1925 will bring greater returns to the orange and lemon growers of Southern California than those of any previous year, and this, despite the fact that there have been years when the returns, f.o. b. cars, have reached the enormous sum of $80,000,000 for the entire crop. EARTHQUAKE AT SANTA BARBARA Exaggerated Stories in Eastern Papers of Damage The shake at Santa Barbara has receded in time so that it can be seen in proper perspective. A fact-finding committee of engineers and others has made its report. This shows that in popular imagination a major tragedy has been mentally created out of a decidedly minor one. The shake contrasting with our year in and year out experiences reveals by Deed of Trust: and WHEREAS, Henry J. A fact-finding committee of engineers and others has made its report. This shows that in popular imagination a major tragedy has been mentally created out of a decidedly minor one. The shake contrasting with our year in and year out experiences, reveals by contrast that California is one of the most secure, if not the most secure place to live in the wide world. In all California, history there have been only three earthquakes with death rolls. One in 1812, one in 1906 and the one at Santa Barbara Monday. The total death list for all California for all history from tremors is less than 800. The total death list in Southern California is less than 100. When we consider that this is a record of more than 200 years we must realize how happy we can be in our freedom from natural violence. California is free from flood, cyclone, torrado, excessive heat and excessive cold. In scores of places more have been killed in a single blow by cyclone or flood than have been killed by natural violence in California from earthquakes and all other natural causes in its entire history. The material damage at Santa Barbara is estimated to be $5,000,000. This is one twenty-fourth of the building that was done in Los Angeles in the year 1923. It is only one-fifth of the value of a huge New York skyscraper. It is equal to the normal building for Santa Barbara for two years. That is if building there had been suspended for two years, the loss would be as great as that caused by the shake. The city has 5500 buildings. Of these 5 per cent, or 275, suffered severe damage and perhaps from 20 to 40 will have to be torn down. The city was not leveled. The real cracking of buildings was limited to less than 2 per cent of its area. One may ride through Santa Barbara streets in any but the business section for miles without encountering a single sign of damage. The facts are not known back East. There they have the inaccurate belief that the city was leveled. They can be reassured only by having the true story as set forth above told to them. Make it material for your letters back home. "Long-a-comin' Post" is the name given to the American Legion unit recently formed in Berlin, Germany. The organization is made up of former soldiers in the American army during World War American Legion pests are now located in practically all of the capitals of Europe, according to State Adjutant James K. Fisk.
