Walnut Growers Had Good Season
Manager Thorpe Submits Report At Annual Meeting
Having marketed $9,625,530.63 worth of walnuts at a cost of only 5½ per cent of the f. o. b. value of the product, the California Walnut Growers' Association Thursday brought to a close its business for 1924 and held its annual meeting at 1745 East Seventh St., Los Angeles.
Officers were re-elected as follows: C. C. Teague of Santa Paula, president; Ralph McNees of Whittler, vice-president; W. T. Webber, secretary; Carlyle Thorpe is general manager of the organization.
Last year's business was about $300,000 greater than that of the previous year. The association marketed 81.7 per cent of the state's entire output of walnuts, this ratio also reflecting a slight gain over that of the preceding year. The total amount of walnuts shipped and sold by the association in 1924 was 34,975,100 pounds, and the average f. o. b. price received, exclusive of shelled walnuts, was 25 2-5 cents per pound.
According to the report submitted by General Manager Thorpe, the season's harvest was the lightest that has been known since 1921, although in the interim the bearing acreage has increased 30 per cent. Subnormal rainfall is said to have been the primary reason for the light harvest last fall.
Mr. Thorpe pointed out that, for the second time in the organization's history it was able to close all pools and finance all phases of its business without borrowing money, the system of discounting drafts on buyers, coupled with the association's reserve, providing sufficient funds with which to make prompt payment to the growers, as well as conduct the general business of the central organization.

As early as October 9, when opening prices were announced, the association forwarded to local associations for payment to the growers, 75 per cent of the value of all walnuts that had beer shipped, and within a few days paid 15 per cent more. The first pool, representing over 96 per cent of the association's entire pack, was closed on November 20, and within eight days thereafter final settlement was made to all affiliated local associations, which promptly remitted to the growers.
The cost of handling the year's business, as outlined by Manager Thorpe, was as follows: For trade discounts, per cent; for brokerage, 1½ per cent for advertising, 2¼ per cent; for general expenses, inclusive of salaries of employees, rent, taxes, insurance, field department activities, etc., 8% of one per cent, making a total of only 5½ per cent of the f.o.b. value of the crop.
According to the growers' service department of the association, there are now 109,118 acres of walnuts in California, representing an investment of $125,000,000. Only 37,973 acres of this grand total is made up of trees in full bearing. There are 29,135 acres in partial bearing, but the biggest share—42.01 acres—represents trees from one to six years of age.
Mr. Thorpe expresses the opinion that when the present plantings come into full bearing a normal crop of walnuts in this state will be two or three times the present annual harvest. New plantings are being made, he asserts, at the rate of about 7.00 acres per year.
Association officials say that foreign walnuts are now being brought to this country, bleached, graded and repacked in eastern packing houses, and sold to the trade, with a 90 per cent cracking guarantee, at wholesale prices from 3 to 10 cents a pound less than the price which must be obtained for California's No. 1 soft shells in order to give the grower a fair return for his labor and investment.
In addition to marking his thirteenth milestone as president of the California Walnut Growers' Association, Thursday was the birthday of C. C. Teague, and upon that occasion the employees of the central association presented him with a large basket of pink and red roses.
A. J. McFudden, a director of the organization from Santa Ana, made the presentation speech, to which Mr. Teague responded attributing the organization's success to straightforward dealing with growers and with the public.
Exhibits Wanted For County Fair
An industrial exhibit, with every manufacturer in Orange county represented, is the plan of the board in charge of the county fair, to be held in Santa Ana September 22 to 26. A space 10x120 feet will be allotted for this purpose.
"It is our ambition to make the fair representative of all the industries in Orange county," de laurea A. M. Stanley, manager, in a letter sent to members of the advertising club, requesting their suggestions on ways of financing the project and also asking for slogan suggestions. "We recognize that the public is not generally conscious of the vast amount of manufacturing that is carried on in Orange county, and it is our hope to awaken them to the importance of the products made in the vicinity.
"The space which we will set aside for the industrial exhibits will be located on the right hand entrance of the main tent. The space allotted will give every manufacturer an opportunity to display his goods in an attractive manner."
The matter of financing the exhibition proposition and that of suggesting a snappy slogan for the fair will be taken up by the advertising club at its next session.

Graduation Exercises At St. Catherine's

Tony Yanez was the winner of the beautiful silver cup presented by E. T. Ganahl. It was awarded for general excellence. Other boys deemed worthy of honorary distinction were given gold medals. The Christian Doctrine medal, donated by Mrs. J. Ackerman, was awarded to William Gallagher. In class A, the medal for military courtesy, donated by Mrs. Louisa Dolan, was awarded to Ernest Landell; in class B, the medal for military courtesy, donated by H. I. Horn, was awarded to Joseph Buttee. The class A medal for military science and tactics, donated by Mr. and Mrs. S. Kistler, was awarded to Adolfo Escovedo; class B medal for military science and tactics, donated by R. B. Young, was awarded to Miles Rettie, while the merit medal, donated by Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Snyder, was awarded to Raymond Wilson.
Great honor is due to Captain D. M. Healy, director of the military training at St. Catherine’s. Under his supervision the boys reviewed the various military drills taught them during the past year. The large audience was held spellbound and marveled at the skill of such mere boys St. Catherine’s boys are a credit to any military academy, and Anaheim may well be proud of them.
