IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK June 10, 1875 Messrs. Hopkins and Sorenson have commenced building a dwelling house for Gustav Helmann. The contractors have acquired a high reputation for skill and taste in the construction of buildings. It is rumored that Messrs. Hammel and Denker, proprietors of the United States hotel in Los Angeles, have decided to take several thousand dollars worth of stock in the new hotel enterprise. The Messrs. Hammel and Denker are successful men of business and can see through a mill-stone about as far as their neighbors. We tip our beaver to them. The cemetery association, at their meeting on Saturday last, re-elected all of the old officers, as follows: John Fischer, president; Fred W. Athearn, secretary; H. Kroeger, treasurer; Messrs. Fischer, Korn, Zeyn, Athearn, Langenberger, Kroeger and Lorenz, trustees. A committee was appointed to secure 10 acres of land suitably located for cemetery purposes. The sad news has been received of the death of Jacob Keller, on the fifteenth instant, at Reutlingen, Germany, where he has been sojourning for some time past. He had engaged a passage for himself and wife on the steamer which left on May 8, but was so utterly prostrated that he could not embark. Telegrams were soon after received by relations in New York, informing them of his death. Mr. Keller was one of the pioneer residents of Anaheim, and his death is generally regretted by those with whom he was for so long associated. P. C. McKinnie has almost entirely recovered from his recent attack of illness. Henry Richter will leave today for a visit to New York. Horse stealing has commenced again in our vicinity. Dotter & Bradley of Los Angeles advertise in our columns that they have for sale 500 rawhide-bottom chairs. The Orange people have solved the question of temperance in a practical manner. They have rented the building which was to have been used for the saloon, and will put it to use more congenial to their tastes. Dreyfus has gone to San Francisco to make the preliminary arrangements for the establishing of a wholesale wine house in that city. David Davies has the contract for excavating the cellar for the hotel building. He has a force of men now at work. There was a large attendance at the ball at Otto Evers' on Wednesday evening and, from all reports, it must have been an enjoyable affair. Sample bricks from Fischer's kiln can be seen at Helmann & George's store. A large quantity are now ready for use. Santa Ana is the only town we ever heard of that mourns because of a lack of Chinamen. The only Chinaman there is in the laundry business, and his charges are so preposterous that the citizens are trying to induce some other celestial to start an opposition wash house. We are pleased to learn that Drs. Cummins and Burtnett, who recently established a drug store at Santa Ana, are meeting with great success in their business. They have just received a large stock of fresh drugs and chemicals. The entertainment in behalf of the funds of the Episcopal church was very enjoyable and was a financial success. Mr. Vivian, the noted comedian, and trustees. A committee was appointed to secure 10 acres of land suitably located for cemetery purposes. Miss Regina Harris of Santa Ana visited with friends in town last week and was the guest of Mrs. Konig Miss Harris is the fliancee of our esteemed fellow townsman, William Falkenstein. Mrs. F. B. Merritt and daughter, Eva, gave tomorrow for Dixon, Ill., to visit relatives. She will be absent some two months. Mrs. Luedke has been seriously ill of cystipelas at her home for a fortnight last. She was in a very critical condition yesterday. Mons. B. Moulot was in town from its ranch at Buena Park on Monday. Moulot looks for an interesting campaign this fall. He is against trusts, and is anti-imperilism, anti-expansion and is for Bryan. Bully for Moulot, but we think McKinley has a cinch. Adolph Rimpau was in Los Angeles on Monday, in consultation with the directors of the oil company which bears its name. Affairs of the company are ratifying, and drilling operations will begin as soon as the necessary machinery may be got on the land. This land has been pronounced by oil experts to be rich in oil, and friends of the company indulge the hope that a good strike may soon be made. Mrs. Zeus entertained the Ladies' machine Club at her home on Broadway on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Smith on the first prize, Mrs. Sandilands the second and Mrs. Eddy the booby. Mrs. Delrose won the guest prize; Delicious freshments were served after the time and a very pleasant afternoon was sent by all present. This was the last duty of the season. The club intends giving a picnic at Long Beach in July. Ed Kraemer reports a way-up-time while camping in the Bear Valley county some days ago. There was no end of fish, some of the trout, which were caught in the creek below the Bear valley dam, being two feet in length. The boys used to catch a wash boiler full before breakfast. Ed would grub worms and Schumacher and Bush did the fishing, but now that he is onto the job, he says the next time he goes out camping he will do the fishing himself and hire a man to grub the bait. Deer were plentiful, fine bucks coming up within 100 yards of their camp. But, he added in a tearful tone of voice, the rangers were so thick that no fun was possible. Ed is busy bailing hay now, but is thinking of taking another trip. However, he will have a rabbit drive and a beee head repast before he strikes out for the mountains again. He tells us on the quiet, that Billy Berdrow wants to see how beee heads are baked in the ground, because he contemplates a trip East soon and wants to show his folks how Californians do the trick. California has an eleven states of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware whose combined state in 1920 of 15,992,368 was a population of 100,000 and practicable population is in counties where there is in the United States in 1920 Los Angeles population including nearly 800,000. To date the county is at least eight years than have counties of Southern five years, the figure even California, 12 years; the entire gain of 1,271,613 in Los Angeles city more in population have the combined Florida, Indiana, Kentucky Nevada in 10 years. Mr. Vivian, the noted comedian, and Madame Muse, a talented pianist, kindly came from Los Angeles and gave their services on the occasion. Several ladies and gentlemen of Anaheim contributed songs and instrumental pieces, thus making a large and well selected program. The amount realized from the sale of tickets, and the proceeds of refreshments was about $100. The members of the congregation, who had the management of the entertainment wish hereby to express their thanks to all the persons who, by their assistance, contributed to the success of the undertaking. Los Angeles is in trouble. A sale of town lots at Santa Monica is advertised, and the Herald professes to belgive that it is the intention of Senator Jénès and his confreres to build up a rival city. General Stoneman has been selected to act as grand marshal of the Fourth of July celebration in Los Angeles. Married—In Anaheim, June 11, 1875, A. C. Roques to Miss Ida Smith. The stages of the Coast Line Company now pass through Orange, carrying mails and passengers. There is now communication four times a day between Anaheim and Orange. The schooner Prescott arrived at Anaheim Landing on Tuesday with 160,000 feet of redwood lumber for Halberstadt & Company. Deeds Filed—Tim Boege to George Bauer, lot on Center and Thalia streets, Anaheim. A. B. Chapman to Henry Neill, lot 20, block A. Orange; $100. A. Robinson, et al., to H. Hüchings, lot 38, The grammar school closed on Friday, Professor Little reports 12 graduates from the eighth grade who will next year attend the high school. Professor Bird of West Anaheim reports eight; a total of 20 new pupils for the high school. Miss Adela Mosseman, who taught the past year at La Crecenta, and Miss Addie Wallop, who taught at Bloomfield, just across the river from Los Alamitos, in Los Angeles county, have each been employed to teach in the primary grade. Miss French has tendered her resignation as a teacher in the high school. She has accepted a position in the Covina school. Her place here will be taken by Miss Purl E. Buttome. Miss Richards will retain her position as teacher of sciences in the high school. Miss Fay, who taught at West Anaheim, has also resigned, and will go to Oakland, where she will accept a position as bookkeeper in a large mercantile establishment. Miss Herr and Miss Kerlin will also retire. Miss Rowland, who taught last year at Olive, has been employed to teach one of the intermediate grades in the Central school. Mrs. Spencer, who taught at Kateella, desires to teach in the Central school. The trustees have selected Professor Athearn as teacher of the high school. The supervisors on Monday formed a new precinct, embracing the Placentia and oil well territory. The new precinct will be known as Placentia proclin. Gray Roberts came down from Los Angeles on Thursday, his tracklaying outfit, which has been engaged in laying new steel rails on the Santa Fe main line between Los Angeles and San Bernardino, having been laid off. Mr. Chapman informs us that a car of naval oranges from his ranch at Placentia recently sold in the New York market for $5.75 per box, the highest price so far obtained for oranges from California this year. Fruit from this ranch is fast becoming known as among the best grown in the state. Its keeping qualities are of a superior order. This is due to the care exercised in picking and packing the fruit, as well as to the superiority of the trees in the orchard. Mr. Chapman is justly proud of the distinction his oranges have attained and, having once established a reputation for the excellence of his fruit, looks for a continuance of the active demand for it, as well as for the fancy prices now being offered for them. The wife of R. L. Coons presented him with a baby boy on Wednesday last, the thirteenth. The wife of Charley Ramella presented him with a new baby boy on Thursday. Where Population Is Concentrating Of the 112,000,000 people residing in the United States, about 75 per cent today are cherishing hopes of some day making a trip to the Golden State, says 'rank V. Stump, editor of "Southern California Business," the official magazine of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, in the June issue. At least 90 per cent of them are planning to come as soon as they can arrange finances and can break family ties long enough to make a visit here. Based on past statistics, it is safe to say that not less than 10 per cent expect some day to make their home in California. To most of these people the word California refers particularly to the southern part of the state—that part including Los Angeles. It is not to be expected that this full 10 per cent outfit, which has been engaged in laying new steel rails on the Santa Fe main line between Los Angeles and San Bernardino, having been laid off. Automobile Notes While the saving of human life is always of primary consideration, an important argument for the elimination of grade crossings that has recently developed is that of delay and inconvenience to automobile transportation, according to the engineering department of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Although the majority of grade crossings that have been eliminated in Southern California to date, according to the club engineers, have been removed for purposes of greater safety to motorists, many crossings of highways over a railroad are guarded by protection gates and watchmen, so that the question of safety is relatively unimportant. But in these instances, it is stated, the delay to vehicular traffic occasioned by the lowering of gates and the passing of trains amounts to several hours at practically every crossing, every day. At many crossings in Los Angeles county alone the traffic over the railway exceeds 15,000 vehicles a day, it is pointed out, so that the delay to motorists is apparent when it is considered that protection gates at some of the crossings are closed as many as 70 times a day. Traffic delay has been a consideration in many of the recommendations for grade crossing separations of the engineering department of the automobile club to the State Railroad Commission. Many notable grade crossing eliminations have been made within recent months after investigation and recommendation made by this department of the big motoring organization. Included in these are the eliminations on Redondo boulevard, in Los Angeles county, over the Santa Fe railroad harbor extension, on the coast highway across the San Diego electric line between San Diego and La Jolla, and on Telegraph road over the Union Pacific and Santa Fe railways. The separations over Telegraph road were made after a study and reports of the situation by the automobile club engineering department and the Los Angeles county in the Superior Court of the County of Orange, State of California, within ten days after the service on you of this summons—if served within this County; or within thirty days if served elsewhere. And you are hereby notified that unless you appear and answer as above required, the said Plaintiff will take judgment for any money or damages demanded in the Complaint, as arising upon contract, or she will apply to the Court for any other relief demanded in the complaint. Given under my hand and the seal of the Superior Court of the County of Orange, State of California, this 3rd day of June, A. D., 1925. J. M. BACKS, (Seal) By E. R. CHURCH NOTICE Services of Maxwell's Spiritual church at Sacramento and Lecture and rank V. Stump, editor of "Southern California Business," the official magazine of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, in the June issue. At least 10 per cent of them are planning to come as soon as they can arrange finances and can break family ties long enough to make a visit here. Based on past statistics, it is safe to say that not less than 10 per cent expect some day to make their home in California. To most of these people the word California refers particularly to the southern part of the state—that part including Los Angeles. It is not to be expected that this full 10 per cent will arrive within the next year or so, or that would mean an influx of some 11,000,000 people and Southern California is hardly prepared for that sudden increase. However, as stated, statistics show that fully 10 per cent of the tourists arriving in Southern California decide to remain here. And they are pouring in today by train and steamship and automobile at the rate of about 3000 a day. California has an area equal to the eleven states of Virginia, Maine, West Virginia, Maryland, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island. Those combined states had a population in 1920 of 15,992,361. California today has a population of a little less than 10,000,000 and practically one-half of this population is in the eight southern counties, where the gain is the fastest in the United States. In 1920 Los Angeles county had a population including the city of approximately 800,000. Today the population of the county is at least 1,800,000, including the city. This is a greater gain in five years than was made by the entire state of Ohio during the 10-year period between 1910 and 1920 and was greater than that of Illinois. Including the city of Chicago, during the same period. The fact is that only two states gained more a population in 10 years than Los Angeles county alone gained in five years, and those two states were New York and Pennsylvania. States that came nearest in a 10-year period to equaling the gain of Los Angeles county alone in five years other than New York and Pennsylvania were: - 10-year gain - Sale - Michigan - Illinois - Texas - New Jersey - Massachusetts - Oklahoma - Minnesota The entire state of New York, which in 1920 had a population of 10,385,227, scored a less gain in population in 10 years than have the eight southern counties of Southern California alone in five years, the figure standing: Southern California, 1,274,000 gain in five years; the entire state of New York, a gain of 1,271,613 in a period of 10 years. Los Angeles city alone has gained more in population in five years than have the combined states of Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana and Nevada in 10 years. Los Angeles city alone has gained more in population in five years than have the combined states of Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana and Nevada in 10 years. Los Angeles county alone has gained more in five years than have the above states in 10 years with the addition of Nebraska New Hampshire, New Mexico and Oregon. The eight southern counties of California alone have made a greater gain in five years than have all the above in 10 years with the addition of Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont and Wyoming. This would be a good story if no further facts were presented, but the gains in Southern California are piling up day by day and at the present rate of increase it is evident that within the next five years the southern counties of California will have a greater gain to their credit than was scored in the past 10 years even in this fast growing section. When one speaks of phenomenal gains in population in Southern California, the mind naturally turns to Los Angeles, where the increase in population has been the most phenomenal of any metropolis in all history. In some respects this is an injustice to the remainder of Southern California, for in practically every section of the eight southern counties the gain in population has been proportionately as great as it has been in the city of Los Angeles itself. In fact, if figures for the last six months were attainable, it is believed that two of three other communities in Southern California would be able to produce a percentage equal to if not slightly surpassing the percentage of gain of the city of Los Angeles. This is especially gratifying to the city of Los Angeles, for the Chamber of Commerce and the business interest of Los Angeles are just as anxious to see every part of the great Southwest swell in population and go ahead in development work as they are to see that the city of Los Angeles itself JACK MARTIN Licensed and Bonded Auctioneer and Real Estate Broker Member Los Angeles Auctioneers' Association HOT WATER SERVICE for the average home at from 3 to 5 cents per day It's a wonderful thing to have available in your home Steaming Hot Water at any minute of the day's 24 hours.
