In his letter this week our writer on local improvements files his objections against willow fences as hiding from the eyes of travelers the charming appearance of our vineyards and gardens. The point is well taken. How much more attractive, for instance, does Mr. Bitner's orchard look since he has removed the willows and substituted a rail fence.
R. Luelke, the jeweler, showed us a stone the other day which possesses quite a history. In 1849 Pope Pius XI presented to a favorite priest a ring. In the center of the ring was a large agate, on which a head was carved, and on each side were five diamonds of rare beauty. The ring was purchased from the priest by Mr. Luelke, in 1852, for $850. The diamonds were put into rings and sold for fabulous prices, but the large agate Mr. Luelke retained, and has just had it placed in a gold setting.

NEW ROAD BILL IS NOW A LAW
Highway Commission Forced to Maintain All Roads
Relative to Assembly bill No. 589, W. F. Mixon, secretary of the California Highway Commission, has made the following statement:
Assembly bill No. 589, introduced by Assemblyman Melville of Fort Bragg, which has been signed by Governor Richardson, is a bill having the sanction of the highway commission. It codifies the laws pertaining to the administrative duties of the commission and clarifies certain points which have arisen under the separation of that department from the department of public works.
"The most important provision of the bill is one which directs the highway commission to maintain all traversable roads, which have come into the system by either legislative act or the various bond issues, a provision which means a very great deal in the immediate future of travel conditions. There are over 1000 miles of these roads in the system, which in the past have not had maintenance care."
"This provision in the new law insures reasonable care, maintenance and improvement of this mileage of highways, much of which is in more or less remote sections of the state. The trained maintenance forces of the commission may now give some measure of relief to those communities that have waited patiently since the first bond issue of 1909 for some sort of service. The maintenance and gradual improvement of these roads will, in the course of a few years, provide a well constructed system that to all intents and purposes will serve the communities in a splendid way until ultimate or final construction can be undertaken."
"This provision of the new law is in accord with one of the recommendations of the Highway Committee of Nine and has had the endorsement of practically every board of supervisors of the state, together with numerous Chambers of bases, personnel, etc. Regular airplane patrol over forested areas will not be maintained this season, but planes will be available at all times for special flights during periods of great fire danger, and for reconnaissance work on large fires.
"Everyone who has an interest in our Pacific coast and inland empire forests, either from an economic or recreational standpoint, should view with keen gratification and approval the re-establishment by the federal government of airplane patrol for the protection of our forested areas from fire," said District Forester Redington. "Thanks to congress, which through the efforts of Senator McNary of Oregon and other western state and private forestry associations and interests, appropriated $50,000 for this work this season, and the splendid co-operation of the air service of the army, we shall again be able to give added protection to federal, state and private forests on the Pacific coast through the use of airplanes. Forest patrol this year will, however, be somewhat different from that maintained in past years, when the air service carried on the burden of the work. This year the army will furnish the forest service with planes and keep them in shape, but the pilots will be recruited from the Officers' Reserve Corps and mechanics from the enlisted reserve and personnel trained at air service depots, while observers will be furnished from the regular forest service personnel. The forest patrol will furnish a splendid training school for all these men. Final announcement of the details of patrol bases and personnel will be announced shortly."

Suppose you were 3 years younger today!
How many women would refuse to turn back the calendar three years if they had the opportunity? Few, certainly, would object to being three years younger!
And that is exactly the opportunity we offer women who do their own family washing, or have it done at home under their supervision.
Figure it out yourself—in the course of 20 years, a day a week spent with the washing amounts to practically the same as though three years had been added to their age.
Or, putting it another way, a woman of 45 has wasted enough time on the family washing in her twenty years of marriage to amount to three years. If the washing had been handed over to us, the time saved would have given her three years full of days that might have been spent with her children, in amusement or civic activities.
It's worth while telephoning us to call for your bundle. We'll do all the washing and part or all of the ironing.
