CORNER PHILOSOPHY Money is made from brass, not brains. The people who sing their own praises are always soloists. There are two tests in happy marriage—riches and poverty. Modern table: One drink loosens the tongue, two loosens the purse, three loosens all earthly ties. There are too many men who think their duty to their fellow men is to skin 'cm'. One thing to remember while driving an auto is some other driver may be as crazy as you are. There's no need to worry when she's out all night if she likes to sit on dad's lap at home. The greatest genius in the world is concentrated energy. A pessimist may have his faults, but his ideas about fishing are generally pretty accurate. It might be well to remember that man is the only animal that can be skinned more than once. Some people make a mountain out of a molehill, others merely put up a bluff. There is a bright side to everything, even the pair of pants you wore all last summer. Flattery is the practice of sprinkling salt on the tail of vanity. Why so much fuss about a woman governor in Texas, when every man has one in his own home? What the average one-track mind really needs is a Y switch for turning purposes. MANY FARMERS COMING TO U.S. Twenty-five Thousand to Arrive From Europe This Year More than 25,000 skilled farmers from the countries of northern Europe will be added to the agrarian population of the United States this year by the selective immigration law. Immigration experts use this to demonstrate the successful operation of the law's selective features. The law provides that 50 per cent of each country's quota may be given by preference to specified relatives of American citizens and to allen farmers. Much doubt has existed as to whether the law would actually bring into this country the desired farming classes. But officials now maintain, on the basis on figures for the first nine months of the quota year ending July 1, that the law in this regard has actually proved its practical worth. This optimism is based on percentage figures to April 1, which will presumably be increased by 25 per cent or more by July 1. Over 20 per cent of Germany's total annual quota is represented by the 10,000 farmers already admitted this year. Holland, which produces farmers of the very highest type, has already filled 37 per cent of its total quota with farmers, and many more thousands are waiting to come to this country. Denmark, another country famous for its agricultural and dairy methods, has sent us in nine months 727 farmers, or 26 per cent of its total allowance. Switzerland leads the percentage of farmer immigrants with 40 per cent of its total, though in actual numbers its 835 is far below Germany's contribution of 10,000. Other countries include Sweden, which has sent in nine months 2813 farmers or 29 per cent of its total quota; Norway, 22 per cent of 1438; Belgium, 152 or 18 per cent. Framers of the immigration law expected a relatively large proportion of the immigrants to this country from Great Britain would also be from the farming class. The consular reports Arguments over desirability of the aid of conveyance are according to the A Southern California member the day he called "devil-wagor years ago, but it may know that steam were denounced as satan. Flattery is the practice of sprinkling salt on the tail of vanity. Why so much fuss about a woman governor in Texas, when every man has one in his own home? What the average one-track mind really needs is a Y switch for turning purposes. The fellow who is his own worst enemy is continually trying to get square with himself. A ring on the hand is worth two on the phone. Sunstroke is often deadly, but it isn't in it with moonshine. Man isn’t old until he can no longer enjoy the conviction that he is misunderstood. The great trouble with a good resolution is that is never comes with a guarantee. The problem is not to decide which one will boss, but gently to break the news to the husband. When money talks even the pure in mind are not always shocked at the conversation of filthy lucre. It isn’t so bad to be a man of one idea if the idea is big enough. Modesty depends far more on how clothes are worn than what clothes are. Lots of women depend more on their cheek than on their backbone in getting through life. Hope is sweeter than possession. The narrow path is safer to travel than the broad highway. The foolkiller takes care of careless pedestrians and careless husbands. A lot of men who can't hear the voice of conscience don't have any trouble hearing the voice of fear. Many a bare-faced liar wears sanctimonious white whiskers. The man who depends upon his conscience should remember that even an alarm clock doesn't always go off. If all Americans were placed end to end they would just think they were waiting in line as usual. A slip of the foot may soon be recovered, but that of the tongue never. A lot of people who are headed for Switzerland leads the percentage of farmer immigrants with 40 per cent of its total, though in actual numbers its 835 is far below Germany's contribution of 10,000. The consular reports show, however, that only 1288 or 4 per cent of the total have been farmers. The explanation given is that Great Britain as a part of her empire policy makes very attractive offers to her farmers who will emigrate to Canada or Australia, or her other agricultural dominions and colonies. The British dominions and colonies in turn, offer more attractions in the way of free transportation and free land than the United States can give. NEW ENGLAND PICNIC Under the auspices of the New England states there is planned the greatest reunion of New Englanders and descendants of New Englanders all day Saturday, May 30, Decoration Day, at Sycamore Grove. The program following the basket dinners at noon will be in keeping with the day, patriotic and sacred songs, appropriate oratory and quiet sociability. Separate county registers will be opened for each state, hot coffee supplied for all. Those born in other states will be asked to enroll in the state of their ancestors. Thousands will want to meet New England friends or unknown relatives, and this will give splendid chance. Carry picnic suppers if you wish. Write or phone C. H. Parsons, TRinity 3511, 901 South Main street, Los Angeles. ALWAYS ON THE JOB The President of the United States is the one man who can never take a vacation. He may move, as he is planning to do this summer from Washington to Swampscott, but his work goes with him. Round and about the office of the President the law of the land has imposed obligations which cannot be avoided. There are not only countless papers which are only legal when he signs them, but in addition there are various boards and commissions whose ability to function is predicated not only on his assent and approval of their action, but his actual direction in many cases. While Tom Jones and Bill Smith and their families may put aside business cares for a couple of weeks or more during the summer, the President must always be on the job. Washington in the summer is not always the most desirable spot in the country, for not only does the temperature ascend to great heights at times, but there is an amount of humidity in or 26 per cent of its total allowance. Constantly increase highway maintenance state of California penny that is collected vehicle tax to meet the Announcement is just highway commission construction improveern California roads out for immediate work $1700,000 will be required tax return for it it is estimated that counties will receive the year from this tax counties approximate. If all Americans were placed end to end they would just think they were waiting in line as usual. A slip of the foot may soon be recovered, but that of the tongue never. A lot of people who are headed for the poorhouse at least are going in style. This would be a wonderful world if we were all as good as we expect others to be. Nobody's shoulders are big enough to carry the world. Let other people do their own worrying. FISHING AT NEWPORT Many enthusiastic fishermen are taking advantage of the new and novel innovation at Newport Beach. A large fishing barge is anchored out in the ocean some distance from the Newport pier. A motor boat carries the passengers from the Newport pier to the fishing barge, which is fully equipped for the comfort of everyone. Special attention is paid to the comfort of the women and children while the men enjoy the deep sea fishing from the barge. Fishing tackle and bait may be procured on the barge; lunches are served; every comfort and convenience is provided. The motor boat leaves the Newport pier every hour for the fishing barge. The barge is equipped to take care of 300 persons. During the past few weeks wonderful fishing has been enjoyed. Some of the finest mackerel ever landed have been delighting the many fishermen. Much interest is attached to the barge due to the fact that it was made over from one of the "movie" boats. The boat was used in filming "Captain Blood" and was overhaulied and rebuilt into the fishing barge, and is attracting a great deal of interest to the many visitors to Newport Beach. Washington in the summer is not always the most desirable spot in the country, for not only does the temperature ascend to great heights at times, but there is an amount of humidity in the air which makes the climate energizing at times. In addition, even President Coolidge himself has been obliged to admit that functioning in the White House with carpenters, plumbers, roofers and other workmen, remaking and renovating the building, will impose a burden which even he is unable to meet. Swampscott, where President Coolidge will pass several weeks during the summer period, is located on Massachusetts bay and is about three miles from Lynn, Mass. The President will take practically half of his office force with him. There will not be the slightest interruption to business. Clerks, stenographers, telegraphers, telephone operators, secretaries and other members of the White House personnel will carry on their work within a short distance of the home that President Coolidge will occupy during July and part of August. Even the two weeks which the President intends to spend with his father at the Coolidge farmhouse in Vermont will be restricted by reason of this ever present and constant obligation to carry on the routine so that even from this point he will attend to the labors which are part of the duties of the Chief Executive. Only those who live in Washington and have an opportunity to view at close range just how much work the President has to do every day can appreciate the manifold duties that are the lot of every president. The so-called "vacation" of the President is merely a change of location of his office force. The Austrian parliament has its first feminine filibusterer, or should it be filibusteress, and she is said to be quite successful as a long distance talker. ANAHEIM GAZETTE Automobile Notes Arguments over speed limits and the desirability of the automobile as a mode of conveyance are far from new, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. Many persons remember the day when automobiles were called "devil-wagons" not so many years ago, but it may be news to many to know that steam cars in early days were denounced also as devices of satan. As a reminder of the attitude toward institutions an eye-opener is had in the following resolution originally adopted by the Lancaster, Ohio, school board in 1828: "You are welcome to use this school-house to debate all proper questions in. But such things as railroads and telegraphs are impossible, and rank infidelity. There is nothing in the word of God about them. If God had designed that His intelligent creatures should travel at the frightful speed of 15 miles an hour by steam, He would have foretold it by the mouth of His holy prophets. It is a device of satan to carry the souls of the faithful down to hell." National automobile accident fatality figures reveal that the greatest increase in deaths during recent months is among children under 15 years of age. An ordinance making a public chauffeur's license a privilege has been enacted at Lynchburg, Va., according to a report received by the safety department of the automobile club. The licenses are issued by the municipal court only after the police department has passed upon the applicant's physical fitness and character. Constantly increasing demands for highway maintenance indicate that the state of California will need every penny that is collected from the motor vehicle tax to meet the enlarging needs. Announcement is just made by the state highway commission that 15 major reconstruction improvements on Southern California roads have been mapped out for immediate work. Approximately President Hindenburg says that he is not going to pay any attention to political parties. Maybe he belongs to the non-partisan league. King Alphonso says that the people of Spain have more freedom than the people of New York, and he would think so more than ever if he happened to get caught in a subway jam. Mussolini is said to be writing a play for presentation in the United States next autumn. Don't know what it's about, but we are willing gto predict that it will have a kick in it. McCARTHY 1201 East Sixth St., Los Angeles, Cal. Don't Delay Constantly increasing demands for highway maintenance indicate that the state of California will need every penny that is collected from the motor vehicle tax to meet the enlarging needs. Announcement is just made by the state highway commission that 15 major reconstruction improvements on Southern California roads have been mapped out for immediate work. Approximately $1,700,000 will be required of the gasoline tax return for these projects, and it is estimated that the 13 southern counties will receive $2,500,000 during the year from this tax, and the northern counties approximately $2,250,000. Each year brings greater demands for reconstruction, widening and maintenance. Beginning in 1912, the state to date has built 2451 miles of paved roads. Of these 622 miles have been rebuilt, and the demand for reconstruction work is growing constantly as nearly all of the early roads were constructed only 15 feet in width, which is inadequate to accommodate present-day traffic, and these must be widened. Some of this pavement constantly is reaching its limit of life and must be reconstructed. There are continually new county roads being built, which add to the cost of maintenance, so that with the best management and economical handling, it appears obvious that the demands on the motor vehicle tax will become greater and greater. The total taxes estimated for road work in 1925 are $21,106,000. Of this the state share will be $10,553,000 and of this amount the state has to date appropriated for reconstruction $4,750.-000, leaving $5,703,000 for general maintenance and minor betterments. Announcement that 15 major reconstruction improvements are provided for in Southern California is being received with great acclaim by motorists and proponents of good roads. It is generally accepted by motorists that this work is needed and that the motor vehicle and gasoline taxes provide an equitable and fair method of financing this class of work. The majority of them, however, have expressed themselves as opposed to using this tax money for building new roads, which they believe to be a capital investment. In this connection, it is pointed out by engineers that with the constant development and improvement of the highway, the motorist will have his hands full in paying for maintenance, widening and reconstruction and minor improvements as the demands increase, and that it would be an excessive burden to assess further taxes for new highway construction. Weather sharks say that this April gave us some of the hottest days in the history of the bureau, but they probably weren't any hotter than the April days General Gage spent around Boston just 150 years ago.
