IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Gulled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK May 22, 1875 A Lying Correspondent—The immigration to California, which is now assuming such vast proportions, is creating a panic among some of our eastern friends, who, it seems, do not hesitate to lie or misrepresent facts, if by so doing they can check the flow and retain for a while longer a few of those who would otherwise come. These remarks are called forth by a half column of falsehoods headed, "California Humbugs," published in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which gives the statements of Justus Ramsey, who claims to have spent several months in California. He says, "All kinds of business is overdone and thousands of people all over the state are without employment." If this were true, failures of mercantile house would be frequent, but, on the contrary all kinds of business is in a healthy condition. And owing to the impossibility of obtaining a reliable supply of white labor, thousands of Chinamen are constantly employed in building railroad-irrigating ditches, and also in all kind of farming operations. In all these cases white labor would be much preferred if it could be obtained. The thousands he talks about are busier and won't take employment when it is offered. He also says "California oranges and lemons are a failure." This will be news to those orchardists in this and San Bernardino county who yearn sell their crops at from $20 to $40 per thousand and net from $1000 to $2000 from the produce of each new of large orchards. He says that graces can be raised in some valleys, just as they can be raised in Minnesota; and goes on to say that wine-making is profitable only when carried on on a large scale. This same news now for the thriving vine. Germany, May 2, that he has reached his native town in safety. He sends one of the pictorial German postal cards, showing a very pretty view of the town and surrounding hills and adds: "This is my birthplace, and is so strange to me. It is really the Old World, but the people are prosperous. Many men are employed in factories and vineyards. All who want work can find it. Regards to all." One of the prettiest sights to be seen in Orange county is Tim Boege's vineyard in the West End. The vines are luxuriant and the tract is now at its best, so far as appearances go, and get much favorable comment from passersby. John Eymann's vineyard on Sycamore street is also one of the picturesque bits of landscape hereabout. His vines are very handsome specimens of vitreure and give promise of an abundant crop. Henry D. Polhemus died at his home at Miraflores on Monday morning after a brief illness of pneumonia superinfected by an attack of la gripe. He was a native of Valparaiso, Chile, and was aged 56 years. Mr. Polhemus has been a resident of this vineyard for 30 years. He was a son-in-law of John Hanna, Esq., of Miraflores. He leaves a wife, two daughters (Mrs. Ralph Hunter of this city and Mrs. Ernst Cayce of Santa Barbara) and a young son to mourn his loss. His death will be regretted and his cherry laugh and general presence will be missed. May he rest in peace. S. S. Skidmore, who has for some months acted as agent for the Griffith Lumber Company, leaves shortly for Downey to Female. His place will be taken by Charles F. Grim, who has for years been connected with the same ferred if it could be obtained. He says that graces can be raised in some valleys just as they can be raised in Minnesota and goes on to say that wine-making is profitable only when carried on on a large scale. This is some more news for the thrifty vintners of Anheim, who have grown rich from the profits of their 20 and 40-acre vineyards! But the biggest lie of all is the statement that two and three successive crops are not raised in one year on the same piece of land. Every man in California who knows anything knows that two and even three full crops are raised each year by whom irrigate. Our seasons are long and there is no difficulty about it—Willia) R. Olden. A notebook containing a note and receipt was placed up on Center Street Friday. The owner can have same b applying at Reiser's brewery and paying for this advertisement. William Allen was brought before Justice Bailey on Wednesday charge with disorderly conduct and making disturbance at the Wexford Inn. He deposited $10 and promised better conduct in the future. The Anaheim Water Company will prosecute anyone interfering with their ditches or tampering with the state therein. It is within the range of possibilities that a large boarding house will soon be built by Charles Hilmer on his property on Center street. Rev. Mr. Bland performed the marriage ceremony between Mr. Mallet and Mrs. Parks at the plene grounds at Santiago canyon on Saturday last. Actuated by a profound admiration of his legal attainments and believing with Sam Weller, Sr., that "with and visdon" always go together, the friends of S. A. Sheffield are urging him to become a candidate for justice of the peace, and have requested us to announce their determination to support him for that office. Skidmore, who has for some months acted as agent for the Griffith Chamber Company, leaves shortly for Downey to remain. His place will be taken by Charles F. Grim, who has for years been connected with the same company at Santa Ana. Mrs. Johnny Vinson of Santa Ana and Mrs. Jackson of Nashville, Tenn., spent Sunday in town with friends. It is doubtful if more beautiful spots can be found in the county than the soiree walnut orchard of J. B. Hae at Katella. All Right for the Warriors, But Hard on the Squaws Among the Indians, the custom of the men was to hunt, light, indulge in flowery speeches at councils, and loaf. It was up to the women to plant the maize, beans and tobacco; cure the venison; take care of the wigwam and long house; and rear the children. But it is no longer good sportsmanship—or good economics—to burden a woman with heavy laborers. Hard work paid her of extraiveness and health, and wears her out at an early age. The worst of these labors is the family washing. It is hard work; and the energy wasted on it never can be replaced. It is our job to take this burden from the housewife; just telephone. We will do all the washing and part or all of the ironing. The Sanitary Laundry A. W. CLEAVER, Proprietor 225 W.
