CORNER PHILOSOPHY Most free speech comes over the radio. Anything which is thrown in free, isn't. If you can't look a man in the eye when you talk to him, you can always use the telephone. The principal reason the old don't see how the young get that way is because they are old. The man who brags about his family tree usually is one of the insignificant twigs. Some fellows who get in on the ground floor finish in the basement. Many a woman doesn't know what trouble is until she has married the man of her choice. Few people are ever in such a hurry that they haven't time to stop and tell their troubles. A small town is a place where you can tell it to the garage man if you think he's giving you the worst of it in a gasoline deal. A bachelor is a man who can buy a suit without feeling that he is depriving somebody of a frock. A speed demon is an idle cuss who always has important business somewhere else. the activities of its touring bureau for the first three months of the year. These show that there were 33,050 inquiries from the East regarding motor tours in this section. There were 234,600 telephone calls, 414,413 personal calls, and as indication that vast numbers of motorists are planning to see Southern California, the distribution of maps for the first three months of this year reached the record-breaking total of more than 3,000,000, or an average of over a million a month. The club says that not only this, but all indications point to an unprecedented invasion of eastern tourists into this section, and also a new record in the number of resident motorists who will tour in their own section of the country this summer instead of going outside Southern California. "Clean up and try to look pretty, if not beautiful. Add a little paint and polish here and there, and try to impress upon your visitors' minds that you are an interesting, wide-awake community," are further hints made to those places which have ambitions toward growth and progress. The more charming the small towns appear to the tourists who pass through them, the sooner will the eastern travelers come back, and the more often will motorists who reside in this section return. It will redound to the advantage of the towns that make a good appearance before their summer visitors, it is contended, because club records show that many eastern tourists planning to come here this year are coming with the intention of establishing permanent homes somewhere in Southern California, and many will settle where the appeal of beauty, cleanliness and draw a warrant for a general fund in favor noils, for right-of-way highway. Some married men would rather spend a lot of time thinking up excuses than lead irreproachable lives. A girl can look as fragile as a snowflake and be as tough as a reducing girdle. Life is a masquerade, and only death has the power to remove the mask. The modern woman's idea of being a real helpmeet is to thread the needle for her husband when he goes to sew the buttons on. Many people are so busy telling the world what is wrong with it, they haven't time to improve it. There seems to be one law for the rich and one for the poor and about 2,000,000 for the middle class. When will prohibition be old enough to do without its bottle. Any statistician can figure out where our taxes are going to, but what the taxpayer wants to know is where they are coming from. If ever Christian nations adopt Christianity, they can cut expenses about 80 per cent. Those research folks might try to find a way to make baldness attack the chin instead of the head. They say that Rockefeller has plenty to eat but can't eat. We know a guy that would sell Rockefeller his stomach for 15 cents. He hasn't used it very often. Most men tell a woman that she is the only one they ever loved merely from force of habit. Some men are workers in the vineyard—and some get their work in on the finished product. Travelers come back, and the more often will motorists who reside in this section return. It will redound to the advantage of the towns that make a good appearance before their summer visitors, it is contended, because club records show that many eastern tourists planning to come here this year are coming with the intention of establishing permanent homes somewhere in Southern California, and many will settle where the appeal of beauty, cleanliness and hospitality is strongest. Southern California may reasonably expect a tidy sum from tourist travel, if the figures announced by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce are correct. These are that $2,500,000,000 will be spent by motor tourists in the United States this year. This means that Californians, with one-thirteenth of the autos in their own state, and with more than 200,000 motor cars from other states, will reap a harvest of approximately $160,000,000 from motor tourists. Statistics gathered from transcripts of coroner's inquests by the public safety department of the club, showing decreases in motor vehicle deaths under various "jaywalking" causes, reveal the fact that local development in pedestrian traffic regulation and education is reaping good results in Los Angeles. It is revealed that only seven fatalities resulted from crossing streets not at crosswalks during the first three months of this year, for instance, as compared with 16 deaths for the first quarter of last year. Crossing streets carelessly netted four deaths for the first three months this year, while seven are recorded under that heading for the corresponding period of 1924. Fatalities because the pedestrian became confused by traffic numbered three for the period this year and 10 for last year. And this despite the fact that there are probably more cars per person in Los Angeles than in any other metropolis in the world, since registration figures for 1925 show that California leads all other states and foreign countries in motor vehicle congestion, with one automobile for every 2.96 persons. SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS Map tract No. 760 was ordered received by the board, and the same referred to the city engineer of the city of Orange. Most men tell a woman that she is the only one they ever loved merely from force of habit. Some men are workers in the vineyard—and some get their work in on the finished product. Time and court plasters heal most wounds. Truth is mighty—and sometimes mighty scarce. At that, it is more profitable to argue with a fool than with a traffic cop. Women used to have the last word, but now the radio announcer insists on the first and the last. Some men seem to think they are good citizens as long as the police can't prove anything on them. An Epitaph He was ever a loyal Democrat—Blessed are they that die in the Lord. THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS HEADED THIS WAY "Fuss up a bit, company's coming." This is a bit of homely advice being broadcast by the Automobile Club of Southern California to all live-wire communities in this section of the state. The warning is inspired by indications of the greatest influx of tourists Southern California ever has known. The big motoring organization is not "shooting in the dark," as it were, for it bases its predictions on tropolis in the world, since registration figures for 1925 show that California leads all other states and foreign countries in motor vehicle congestion, with one automobile for every 2.96 persons. FACTS REGARDING MINING "The history of mining is one of peaks and depressions, with no stability, but with fair average prices over a period of years," says Robert E. Tally, general manager of the United Verdi Copper Company. "The great need of the industry is stabilization. Production should be adjusted to consumption, and produce should not permit inflated prices, as inflation always causes a reaction. "The ideal condition for the metal market is reasonable prices with relatively normal demand and costs. It should be permissable for producers collectively to curtail when the market warrants. This policy is now considered illegal. Curtailment should not be permissable if for the sole purpose of increasing prices to the extent of removing competition and restraining trade. "The mining industry has been an important factor in the development of the West, but it will retain its position only as long as the industry remains profitable. Our copper and silver mines have to compete with low-cost foreign producers who enjoy many natural advantages, such as large tonnages of higher grade ores, cheap labor, low taxes and, in most cases, water transportation."
