Wise and Otherwise By VADNEY The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow Pretty near all those who were lured into looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of hope projected after the election last fall have abandoned their quest and settled down to realities. This applies more to those in the mercantile business than it does to the devotees of the stock and other speculative markets, although the latter also appear to have some glimmering of the actuality. A continual rise of prices, whether they be of securities or grain or plain calco, is attractive for those who have these articles for sale, but hardly as much so for those who are urged to buy. As it takes the consent of two parties to make a bargain, a reluctance on the part of one is apt to spoil a trade. Two-dollar wheat, thirty-cent cotton and two-dollar wool look very well on paper as an indication of prosperity, but of what avail are they when prices of bread, cotton and woolen garments start to get beyond the ordinary prices and people begin to stint themselves in their use? It is this ordinary and matter of fact thing that has checked a speculative boom movement in commodities which at one time promised no end of future trouble, but which is now negligible. The quick sensing of the consumer's reaction to inflated prices helped merchants to get their bearing, and so prevented them from lending aid to a foolish as well as a futile proposition. They are now engaged in dealing with facts, not theories, and with the actual situation instead of an imaginary one. The Turks are insisting that all the European powers move their embassies to Angora. Probably on the theory that it will be easier to get the diplomatic goats there. YOUTH MUST BE TRAINED Declaring that the young men of the nation must learn to obey before they are fit to command in any enterprise, whether civil or military, Governor J. C. Scrugham of Nevada has given his endorsement to the citizens' military training camps in a letter received today by Major General Charles T. Menoher, commanding the Ninth Corps Area. Individual Deposits Subject to Check 401,627.65 Science and Religion The president of nine colleges and universities in California who were requested some time ago by the state board of education to examine as a committee the textbooks in science used in the public high schools and junior colleges of the state with a view to discovering whether the subject of evolution was presented in such a way as to discredit the Bible and to develop in the minds of students an attitude of irreverence and atheism, have not only examined the textbooks but have granted hearings to ministers of various denominations and have come to a unanimous decision. It is that no statements derogatory to religion have been found. In some few books evidence in support of evolution is presented, but in only a few instances is the possible bearing of evolution upon science discussed at all, and in those cases the writers have taken pains to assure their young readers that there is no conflict. Every one having any pretense to an education, as these nine presidents say, must be informed as to scientific facts and generally accepted theories. The truth has nothing to fear, except that it shall be hidden. Veritas nihil veritur alis abscondi. Nowadays, some of the leading heavyweights will not wrestle worthy opponents because they are not on sneaking terms. It seems they must be on the same social plane, must be properly presented to each other and all that sort of thing. Strangler Lewis, former world's champion, and Big Munn, present holder of the title, have put up the bars against worthy contenders because they and their managers are riled at one another. We have the spectacle of such high class wrestlers as Joe Stecher, Hans Steinke, Marin Plestina, Waldek Zybsko and Jimmie Londos denied the right to compete for the championship. First it was Lewis who cave these challengers the run-around, and now it is Munn. Orange County Business College SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA ANAHDIM GAZETTE "I am convinced that the plan of training the young men of the nation between the ages of 17 and 31 in military science is a very beneficial one from all points of view," Governor Scrugham writes. "The exercise afforded tends to develop the physical powers of the growing young men and to give them a correct posture and would alone justify the training involved. In addition to this however, the camps give an opportunity to the young men of equal ages to associate in large units and to develop character by personal contact for a common purpose. The discipline imposed is also valuable in teaching them that they must learn to obey before they are fit to command in any enterprise, whether of a civil or military character. "In conclusion, the work serves an invaluable purpose in preparing the young men of this country to defend the nation in the hour of peril, and this preparation is not only one of power but off that patriotism which consists in a proper frame of mind which every citizen ought to have respecting his obligations to the government which protects him and his property." More than 26 per cent of the number of citizens who can be accommodated in the seven camps in the Ninth Corps Area have already applied, although the first camp does not open until June 12.
