Wise and Otherwise By VADNEY How Much of the U.S. Do You Own? Are you a "bull" on America? If so, you are probably one of the more than fourteen million people who now own in their own right a share in the great industrial and utility corporations of the country. Every third wage earner in the United States is now a capitalist. In 20 years the number of shareholders in the great business enterprises of America has increased more than 500 per cent. Bolshevism simply won't work in this country. Why? Because of the mutualization of our giant resources. In 10 years life insurance assets have increased more than 100 per cent building and loan more than 150 per cent savings banks deposits 66 per cent, and farm co-operative associations about 200 per cent. While the population of this country has been increasing 14 per cent in the same period wealth has increased 72 per cent Census bureau statisticians place the wealth of America at more than $320,000,000 And the significant fact most outstanding is that more people own more of their own nation today than ever before. While the structure of our own government is so arranged that the president cannot be a nonentity even if he his natural bent for he must act and he must think; nevertheless men of real force and decision have stormy times The slow-to-acct ultra-conservative seems to be the type most desired. The other day, at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Md., the doctors took a troublesome old stomach right out of a man, and the marvel of it is that he is getting along without that stomach! Operation was found necessary because of tumor. Of course, the patient had to eat in order to live afterward. What the doctors did was to enlarge a part of the intestines to serve as a stomach! Dr. J.M.Finney, surgeon in charge of the operation, said that only 32 such operations ever had been performed, and that half of these had been successful; the patients developing normal appetites and living many years. So if your stomach is not fitting on all six go and get yourself a new one! A Modern Ballard of Beasts Old Noah showed when he manned the Ark, (There’s one more puzzle to cross.) The animals went in six by six: The Ornithorhynchos and Apteryx. And Shem and Ham collected the fares While Japhet ruled the deck into squares. The information given that not only is vaccination necessary without delay but that necessity applies to all individuals who have not been successfully vaccinated during recent years. The Public School Portective League of California, with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, takes this opportunity to correct any possible erroneous impression which such statements may have left with the general public in regard to the necessity of vaccination. There is no law in the state of California which requires the vaccination of any man woman or child. Persons affected with smallpox members of household, or others having directly contacted a smallpox patient may be quarantined by order of the state health department, but absolutely no vaccination shall be required or enforced. There is no such thing in the state of California as compulsory vaccination. The league has no quarrel with those who believe in vaccination. Under the Constitution free America, those who want vaccination should have every opportunity to avail themselves of the privilege. But as long as the value of vaccination to prevent smallpox is conceded to be highly speculative, and by many recognized medical authorities held to be decidedly harmful its effects, the citi- deathofmany." Presidents And Figureheads In the last century and a quarter, France has experimented a great deal with heads of state, and during that period has dealt with a variety of them. Between Louis XVI. and President Doumergue, France has seen Bourbons, Napoleon's and presidents of every type, from nonentities like Felix Faure to men of strength and decision like Casimir-Perler and Millerand. After all this experience it has been proved, in the opinion of Albert Guerard, in Scribbner’s, that most satisfactory residents of Elysee palace are those who neither act or think. Charles X took the bit in his mouth The league has no quarrel with those who believe in vaccination. Under the Constitution of free America, those who want vaccination should have every opportunity to avail themselves of the privilege. But as long as the value of vaccination to prevent smallpox is conceded to be highly speculative, and by many recognized medical authorities held to be decidedly harmful in its effects, the citizens of the state should be allowed to choose for themselves in the matter of inoculation. And the law of California protects every individual in his choice. In a letter to the league, Dr. Walter Dickle, secretary of the State Board of Health, makes the following statement: "We issued no instructions regarding the control of smallpox; I presume the health officers are working under the rules and regulations contained in Special Bulletin No. 26." It is evident that there is no cause for serious concern over the smallpox situation. No epidemic seems imminent, and wholesale vaccination of the public at this time seems extremely unnecessary, even though there were a law to compel it. League members and all others opposed to vaccination are advised to familiarize themselves with the act of the 1921 legislature, set forth in The Political Code of California, which abolished compulsory vaccination in this state. School authorities may exclude from school unvaccinated children for a period of 14 days if the pupils have been exposed to smallpox but parents are particularly advised that vaccination cannot be required by law. You are not misunderstood half as often as you ought to hope you are.. RADICAL ACTIVITIES VS. AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS In a recent stirring address in New York City on the subject "Are Radical Activities Weakening American Institutions," Martin W. Littleton, one of the ablest constitutional lawyers in the United States said in part: "Polyglot radicalism — embracing everything from a disgruntled Republican and a dissatisfied Democrat to a purging Socialist and a raging Red—dissolved into its original elements in the fierce fires of the last campaign. Each of these elements in its own way is imitating the stridulant grasshopper in the corner of the fence. "The factious and fictulous alliance is broken and the deformity of the whole movement stands uncovered; but the real purpose of radicalism is unchanged. Its forces may be shattered into unrelated fragments and its union of paradoxes may be dissolved; but revolution, of the essence of which it was but a symptom, abides with us always." "It inheres in and clings to civilization. It is not provoked by war nor allyged by peace. It is not born of political defection nor cured by political harmony. It is present at the birth of every government and administers not infrequently at the death of many." Government substitution for individual government taking place of man and woman, government hovering over community and stifling air making breath liberty hard difficult. CUTTING THE COST President Coolidge according report has reduced cost of his inauguration from $100,000 to $450 The reduction presumably refers to amount saved in show features Washington folks are very much disappointed that is not be denied, and there are signs also that some of good people who had planned to come to capital and enjoy the show of tinsel gold lace red fire are also disappointed The country as whole can be depended on stand by President in appreciation of his motive. The infant with the bottle stills its fretful cries A lesson plainly teaches: It pays to advertise. CALIFORNIA LAMB CROP GREATEST IN HISTORY Nearly 2,000,000 Will Be Shipped to Market This Year An $18,000,000 crop or spring lambs, the greatest in the history of the state, is what favorable weather, normal rainfall and good feed has brought to the sheep growers of California, according to a statement this week by W.P.Wing, secretary of the California Wool Growers' Association. Not only is the crop large but the price, King says, will average $10 per lamb, the highest in years.as the result of a shortage in eastern states. The grower's association estimates that more than 900,000 lambs will be available for market during the spring season which begins March 15 and extends into June.Approximately 600,-ooo of these lambs will be shipped out of the stall. The total lamb production in California for the year is estimated at 1,800,000. Special train schedules have been arranged by the Southern Pacific Company to handle the heavy spring lamb shipments. The "lamb specials"will be operated twice a weak from the various lamb districts. From the Sacramento valley and northern California points shipments will be made on Mondays and Fridays. From other points in the state on Tuesdays and Thursdades. When the dimpled baby's hungry, what does she do? It doesn't lie serenely and merely sweetly coo; The hungry baby bellows with all its little might Till somence gives it something to curb its appetite. The infant with the bottle which stills its fretful cries A lesson plainly teaches: It pays to advertise. The lamb lost on the hillside when darkness closes round Stands not in silence, trembling and waiting to be found; Its plaintive bleating echoes across the vales and meads Until the shepherd hears it,and hearing kindly heeds. And when its fears are ended;as on its breast it lies, The lamb has made this patent :It pays to advertise. The fair and gentle maiden who loves the bashful boy Assumes when in his presence a manner that is coy, She blushes and she trembles till he perceives at last And clasps her closely to him and gladly holds her fast, And as he bends to kiss her and as she serenely sighs, This fact is demonstrated: It pays to advertize.
