Anaheim People Confronted by Crisis (Continued from Page One) Anaheim Klan, in a full page advertisement in the local Klan organ, stated that these candidates were Klan candidates. The local Klan organ did not tell the truth. After the election the Klan told the truth. They were Klan candidates, and the local organ of the Klan knew that they were Klan candidates. The local Klan organ simply tried to deceive the voters by saying that it was a "wet and dry" fight. It was nothing of the kind. Simply Klan fraud and deceit. But, since Metcalf refused to give the reasons why he switched candidates, the people have a right to conclude that he switched because the local cyclops told him to do so. And that is exactly what the people of this community do believe regarding Metcalf's right-about-face. Metcalf was not opposing Hartranft because Hartranft was "wet," nor because he believed that Hartranft was "wet." He was opposing Hartranft because Hartranft was not on the Klan ticket. All the bunk about the "wet and dry" issue in that campaign was simply to deceive the voters into voting for Klan candidates. There was no "wet and dry" issue in that campaign—and Metcalf and the local Klan organ knew it. It was simply an attempt to mislead and deceive the voters. The same attempt is being made now, and by the same people. The "wet and dry" question is not an issue in the recall election. The candidates on the Anti-Klan ticket are "bone dry." It is simply absurd to say otherwise. It is not only absurd, it is absolutely all honest. ants lived together in a spirit of religious tolerance and friendship. The seed spread by Myers generated and the plant of religious bigotry and intolerance took root in the minds of many people in this community. It was easy work then to organize them into his Ku Klux Klan. Many of them were people of the best intentions, but Myers warped their minds—made them believe that they were crusaders for Protestantism, when in fact they were simply tools in his hands, suckers to put their money into the hands of the professional organizers who run the Ku Klux Klan for what they can get out of it. Not everybody could be induced to hate the Catholics. Therefore, various tactics were used to secure additional members. Some were brought into the Klan on account of hostility to the Jews. Others were told that the Klan would protect the country against the foreign born. Still others were induced to join on the theory that the Klan was organized to fight against the liquor traffic. And still others were told that the Klan would operate to protect American womanhood. And, again, others joined under the impression that the Klan was an organization which would help the worker in his contest with the employer. It offered all things to all men—provided they paid the necessary fees so that the organizers could get their rake-off. But back and behind it all was the spirit of hatred of the Catholic church. The klansmen spread manifest lies about the Catholic church—the members of that church, their beliefs, their morals, their good citizenship. Slanderous literature regarding Catholics and Catholic institutions were circulated broadcast throughout the community, breeding a spirit of receive the was exposed with the most candidates to one vote. It was simply an attempt to mislead and deceive the voters. The same attempt is being made now, and by the same people. The "wet and dry" question is not an issue in the recall election. The candidates on the Anti-Klan ticket are "bone dry." It is simply absurd to say otherwise. It is not only absurd, it is absolutely honest. The one and only issue in the recall election is: Shall the Ku Klux Klan control the public affairs of this city? Wherever and whenever the Ku Klux Klan has secured control of the public affairs of any community—city county or state—the results have been detrimental to that community. The Ku Klux Klan stands for religious intolerance and racial hatred. The Ku Klux Klan is particularly aggressive against the Roman Catholic church. This statement applies with full force to the Ku Klux Klan in this city. The members of the Ku Klux Klan in Anaheim are known to be bitterly hostile to the Catholic church. They are not klansmen because they are "dry." They are klansmen because they are anti-Catholic. Let us review past local history a little further. Never once in the history of Anaheim have the members of the Catholic church even attempted to secure control of the public affairs of this community. It is true that a few years ago, just previous to a high school election, the story was circulated that the Catholics were going to attempt to elect two members to the school board. There were four candidates, two to be elected. Of the four candidates, two were Catholics. When the votes were counted, it was found that the two Catholic candidates had not received 5 per cent of votes of the Catholic voters of the school district, even if all the votes they had received were those of Catholics. The story circulated on the eve of that election was entirely unwarranted. There was absolutely no truth whatever in the statement that the Catholics were planning to elect Catholic members of the school board. Had the Catholics organized to do so, they could easily have elected the two Catholic candidates. The persons who, on the eve of that school election, circulated that silly campaign were over a thousand members. Such candidates were told that if they did join the Klan, their good citizenship would be taken away from them. But back and behind it all was the spirit of hatred of the Catholic church. The klansmen spread manifest lies about the Catholic church; the members of that church, their beliefs, their morals, their good citizenship. Slanderous literature regarding Catholics and Catholic institutions were circulated broadcast throughout the community, breeding a spirit of hatred towards the Catholics and their religion. A pamphlet purporting to give the membership cath of the Knights of Columbus was passed from hand to hand. The membership cath quoted in that pamphlet in no manner whatever resembled the membership oath of the Knights of Columbus. It was an absolutely dishonest and unscrupulous propaganda. It referred the reader to the Congressional Record for proof of the correctness of the oath. But it did not quote what the Congressional Record contained regarding the oath. The inference to be drawn from the pamphlet was that the Congressional Record was authority for the truth of this piece of anti-Catholic propaganda. The fact is that the untruthfulness of this piece of anti-Catholic propaganda was denounced in the Congressional Record. This whole anti-Catholic propaganda was based solely upon deceit and fraud — fraud and deceit. The whole thing is simply fraud and deceit; more fraud and deceit, and constant reiteration of fraud and deceit. Silently, like a snake winding its way through the tall grass, keeping out of sight of those against whom its venom was directed, this abhorrent thing crawled through this community, leaving a trail of lies, fraud and deceit. Many were deceived by this campaign of fraud and deceit. About 300 members were secured in Anaheim for the Ku Klux Klan. Silently, under the guidance of Cyclops Myers, the plans of the Klan to secure control of the public affairs of this community were laid. Members of the police force were induced to join, in order to give the Klan the semblance of law and order. Candidates for public office were induced to join, on the threat that if they refused the Klan would vote solidly against them. They were told that the local Klan had over a thousand members. Such candidates were told that if they did join the Klan, their good citizenship would be taken away from them. But back and behind it all was the spirit of hatred of the Catholic church. There was absolutely no truth whatever in the statement that the Catholics were planning to elect Catholic members of the school board. Had the Catholics organized to do so, they could easily have elected the two Catholic candidates. The persons who, on the eve of that school election, circulated that silly campaign lie are now members of the local Ku Klux Klan, and are still Catholic haters and Catholic baiters. Before the Klan became active in Anaheim—before our people realized or believed that this organization could fasten its tentacles on this city—some meetings were held, purposely and with malice aforethought, in the Christian church of this city at which so-called "reformed nuns," "escaped monks" and renegade priests of the Catholic church spread the gospel of hate among whoever attended these meetings. The man responsible for this was Leon Myers, the present cyclops of the Anaheim Klan. It was done deliberately to bring about a feeling of hatred and enmity towards the Catholic church in this city. It was unfair, unjust, un-American and un-Christian. Few suspected the evil designs back of this movement. It was to nave the way for the advent of the Ku Klux Klan, based on religious intolerance and racial hatred. This dirty work spread the seeds of hatred in this community, from which Anaheim is now reaping a harvest of regret. Previously, people of Anaheim had not drawn any dividing line between members of the various Christian denominations. Catholics and Protestants. Cyclops Myers, the plans of the Klan to secure control of the public affairs of this community were laid. Members of the police force were induced to join, in order to give the Klan the emblance of law and order. Candidates for public office were induced to join, on the threat that if they refused the Klan would vote solidly against them. They were told that the local Klan had over a thousand members. Such candidates were told that if they did join the Klan, the fact of their membership would remain secret and they could deny it. More fraud and deceit. Merchants were induced to join the Klan on the threat of a boycott if they refused. The four Klan members of the city council were not known to be klansmen when they were elected last April. It is the policy of the Klan to have their members deny their membership. The people were fooled into voting the Klan into power. More fraud and deceit. A large percentage of the men and women who voted these Klan members into office last April, not knowing that they were voting for klansmen are now seeking their recall from office and the election in their stead of men who are merely opposed to Klan control of our public affairs. When the recall notices were filed the issue was clearly defined: Klan and Anti-Klan. It is simply that and nothing more. All the attempts to make it appear otherwise are simply more fraud and deceit. This whole Klan program is based upon fraud and deceit. In the primary election last August there was the same attempt to de- ANAHEIM GAZETTE receive the voters, but then the Klan was exposed for what it really is, with the result that the local Klan candidates lost in Anaheim by a two-to-one vote. Only after the election did the Klan acknowledge that the Klan candidates were such. Fraud and deceit. Before the primary election the local Klan organ declared that the Klan candidates were not Klan candidates. Fraud and deceit. The same fraud and deceit was attempted in August as had been successful in April. But it failed in August because the Klan and its tactics had been exposed. Again the same attempt is being made to deceive the voters. The falsehood that this is a "wet and dry" fight is being circulated throughout this community. The Klan candidates are not dry candidates. They are Klan candidates. Nor are the Anti-Klan candidates wet candidates. Man for man, they have a better record on this matter than the Klan candidates. Nobody with a knowledge of all the candidates can truthfully deny this statement. The issue is simply Klan and anti-Klan. Simply that and nothing more. The voters are entitled to know the truth. In order to mislead the voters to believe that the "wet and dry" question enters into this campaign, the Klan has brought into this community one, E. J. Bulgin, to conduct a series of so-called revival meetings. Under the guise of religion the Klan proposes to put over some more, of its campaign of fraud and deceit. Over his signature in the local Klan organ, Cyclops Myers stated that the local Klan was bringing Bulgin here to conduct these meetings. his often changing wishes. This devotion of his family and his only surviving brother, F. A. Altenow, whose wife also tenderly assisted in the nursing, will long be remembered. God will reward these deeds of love. The deceased is survived by a brother, F. A. Over his signature in the local Klan organ, Cyclops Myers stated that the local Klan was bringing Bulgin here to conduct these meetings. On his arrival here, Bulgin was asked by six Protestant clergymen whether he came here in the interest of the Klan and its campaign. Bulgin replied that he had not come here in the interest of the Klan and was not brought here by the Klan, nor would he take any part in this campaign on behalf of the Klan candidates. Again there was an evident attempt to deceive the voters. More fraud and deceit. Bulgin, according to the reports of his meetings in the local Klan organ, has persisted in taking part in this campaign on behalf of the Klan candidates. It is done in an underhand, sneaking manner, however. No intelligent person is deceived by his methods of campaigning. He has classed the Ku Klux Klan with such organizations as the Masons, Oddfellows and Elks. The Masons, Oddfellows and Elks are not political organizations. The Ku Klux Klan is a secret political organization. We do not object to secret benevolent societies, such as the Masons, the Oddfellows or the Elks. We do not object to political organizations; they are necessary under our system of government. But every decent citizen must object to and fight against any organization which is both SECRET and POLITICAL, especially when such an organization is based upon religious intolerance and racial hatred, and has fraud and deceit as a campaign policy. That, we submit, needs no discussion. The Ku Klux Klan is a secret political organization, with religious intolerance and racial hatred, as its foundation and fraud and deceit as its campaign policy.
