BULGIN'S RECORD IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY KLAN EVANGELIST ACCUSED OF SHADY DEAL AT SAN JACINTO Dr. F. K. Strasser Makes Public Some Facts Relative to the Transactions of the Klan Champion—Forced by the Court to Deed Back a Ranch Which He Had Secured, According to the Statement of Judge Dunsmore, by "Decelt and Fraud." Shortly after his arrival here, Dr. E. J. Bulgin recited a number of charges that would likely be brought up against him, and proceeded to wipe his slate clean by denying them ahead of time. The doctor of course knew that his unsavory record was following, his trail with the persistency of a bloodhound, and his actions in other places would become public property here. No doubt the faithful—those authorized to camouflage their identity with the white robes and hoods, believed his statements and regarded him as a martyr to a righteous cause, but the 12,200 people of the city who are not klansmen knew that the evangelist had merely exposed his hand, given himself away, by denying charges against him that had never been hinted at here. Among the many accusations against him which Bulgin brought forward for entitled "The Swan Song of a Klansman Kouncil," given under the direction of the K.K.K. circuit of Atlanta, Ga., and was staged in minstrel fashion, with Dr. Long as stage director, Metcalf as middleman and Knipe and Bulgin as endsmen. Mayor Metcalf, in the role of a much-abused councilman in a good little city, bemoaned his fate in true dramatic style, stating that he was being villified by a few people because the papers claimed it would never rain while the city had four bone dry councilmen. He held the center of the stage for nearly an hour and a half and proved himself to be a good entertainer, a fine politician and an A-1 klansman. Knipe, as a bucolic country bumpkin, addressed his audience as "Gentlemens and Ladies," and gave an excellent impersonation of Bob McKim, the villian of the movie, making the cold chills race up and down the spine of his audience when he declared, in thunderous tones, he would like to see the color of the guy's eyes who said he was dominated by the Klan, was a klansman, or wouldn't do as he danged please—if he could. Bulgin, as a ministerial clown, was the top-notcher of the show, carrying his audience from the sublime to the ridiculous, as he brought tears to the eyes with a parody on "In the Baggage Coach Ahead" and caused howls of joy with his musical ditty: "If I were a klansman, How in the hell Would I pull my robe down Over my big black wings?" Although the crowd was in a happy state of mind and took everything in good humor, it was easy to see that those who had come to obtain stronger fare than tea and who really desired to learn something were going away disappointed and with a feeling that month will receive side Parent-Teacher-composed of parents from Broadway schools. Among the many accusations against him which Bulgin brought forward for the purpose of denying, was the River-side court affair, from which, he claimed, he emerged unspotted. But there arrived in Anahiem Monday morning a gentleman from San Jacinto, Dr. F. H. Strasser, who was one of the principals in a land deal which would have placed Rev. Bulgin in possession of a ranch without compensation on his part, had not the intervention of the court compelled him to restore the property to Dr. Strasser and his wife, Ethelle Strasser. Dr. Strasser came to Anahiem because he had learned that Bulgin was here, and his only object in coming was to expose the "evangelist." He went directly to the Chamber of Commerce offices and laid the matter before George W. Reid, the secretary. Between 30 and 40 of the leading members of the chamber responded to telephone calls and assembled at the Hotel Angelina to hear Dr. Strasser's charges. He stated that Bulgin had purchased the ranch of Ethelle Strasser, turning in oil stock in payment that was so absolutely worthless that it was a waste of good paper to print it on. When it was learned by the Strassers that they had been swindled out of their ranch, suit was filed in the Riverside court to recover it. Bulgin may declare that he emerged from the trial vindicated, but Judge F. E. Dunsmore's language in handling down a decision at the close of the trial don't indicate it. He said: "Now, therefore, it is ordered, adjudged and decreed that the exchange of said real property in paragraph IV of the complaint, and hereinafter described, for said shares of stock of the Kelso Mining and Milling Company, in said complaint described, and the conveyance and transfer of said lands by plaintiffs to Marea Bulgin, was obtained through FRAUD AND DECEIT OF THE DEFENDANT, E. According to reports from all sections of the country, Bulgin's career has been just one darned thing after another, but we mention only this Riverside affair because it happened in our own neighborhood. Bulgin also stated in one of his earlier talks here, that while he was holding a meeting at Boulder, Colo., the Knights of Columbus order in that town, 1,000 strong, attended the meeting in a body and found no fault with his remarks. Frank F. Dolan, grand knight of the Boulder council, in a telegram in answer to one by the local branch of the order, wired: "Knights of Columbus never attended any of Bulgin meetings in a body. Never had membership of 800 or 1,000, as our largest membership never was more than 170." WHAT TRANSPRIRED AT THE KU KLUX TENT Audience Apparently Pleased With the Show Monday Night A crowd of about 1500 persons, mostly from outside points, attended the Monday evening matinee at the Bulgin revival tent on Wilhelmina and Claudina streets. The attraction was a vaudeville skit month will receive prizes. The Eastside Parent-Teacher Association is composed of parents and teachers from Broadway, Central and Lincoln schools. February 17 being Founder's Day, it was decided to have "fathers' night," so the fathers can take part in the Founder's Day celebration. Miss Mary Smith and Mrs. Edna Mills Curtiss will have charge of the program, the school children taking part on the program in memory of Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays. Mr. De Sombre will give an interesting and instructive talk on "How to Study." The entertainment will be held at Central school kindergarten. Pauline Frederick and Laura La Plante are co-starred in the picture, which is one of Universal's big offerings for the season 1924-25. Other principals are Malcolm McGregor, Tully Marshall, Wanda Hawley, Helen Lynch and George Cooper. One of the important factors of "Smouldering Fires" is the shop committee consisting of heads of various departments who meet in conference daily with the president of the concern, played by Miss Frederick, and her chief clerk, portrayed by Marshall. This committee is composed of the old-time character actors who are: Bert Roach, who played straight roles in "The Abysmal Brute," "The Flirt" and other productions, besides being a noted comedian both of screen SKULL OF MASTODON FOUND NEAR PLACENTIA Weighs 487 Lbs.; Animal Estimated to Have Been 22½ Feet High Thousands upon thousands of years ago, say anywhere from the middle Miocene to the late Lifestocene period, a 60-foot mastodon lay his hulking 20 tons on a hillside near where the town of Placentia now prospers. That hillside was the great prehistoric beast's tomb. The gigantic skull, weighing 487 pounds, has just been unearthed by John Golaspy, an oil driller of Placentia. Paleontologists who have examined the skull declare it is the largest to come their attention, according to Golaspy. They estimate that the masodon stood 22½ feet high. Golaspy will not divulge the location of his discovery. He says he intends to continue excavating for the remainder of the skeleton. "I came on the skull quite by accident," he said. "I noticed a corner of the skull exposed above ground. It looked like decomposed granite, so I dug it out from three feet of earth. I found a rib a foot broad. The nose broke off the skull. It measured eight feet from the tip to the top of the skull. I am looking for the tusks now. The forehead measured 61½ inches across." Golaspy said he had been offered $5000 for the huge bones. He said he made the discovery more than a month ago, but kept it secret in order to continue excavating undisturbed. The scene of the digging is little more than a half hour's drive from Placentia, but Golaspy refuses to name the direction.
