Fruit Growers Hold Annual Meeting (Continued from Page 1) and which is entirely due to close attention to every operation and rigid economy, wherever such could be worked out without sacrificing our efficiency. It was also due to our special method of handling your business and to the close co-operation of the employes of the organization. Our total membership now stands at 109 active members representing 1623 1-2 acres of oranges and 79 1-2 acres of lemons making a total of 1703 acres now in your Association. When we first started this Association six years ago, we had in mind 2,500 acres as the limit we could most efficiently handle. We have since found that in a house of this size, much higher returns can be made and more satisfaction given to our members if we keep this acreage around what we have at present. The full capacity of this plant is around 1200 cars per year and to gain portant and which should be worked according to the fluctuating market conditions, we should not have more than a total of 800 cars to ship each. We have, however, suggested to your Board of Directors that we are now in a position to consider applications from a few desirable groves, but would not advocate throwing open our books in a general way. We have also suggested that a few members who have in the past marketed part of their acreage in the Association and used the Association information to market the balance of their acreage outside be invited to bring their entire acreage into the Association. We believe it is perfectly alright for a member to sign up his acreage as it has been made in Sacramento of the certificate of registration, it will be approved and returned to the clubs who will then issue plates. The clubs operate branch offices in more than 50 California cities and will have a special staff at each office to handle registrations during the renewal period which begins February 1nd. Marsh stated the help of the clubs would assist the division materially in its task of providing licensus for more than 130,000 motor vehicles in the state before March 2. Application may be made by mail through the Sacramento office. Marsh urges all mail applicants to forward both the pink and the white certificates. By thus co-operating with the department, he said today, thousands of dollars will be saved in verifications and a more prompt service can be rendered the motoring public. Applications may be made by mail to the Sacramento office also on the white certificate, when it is impossible to obtain the pink. After verification, plates will be mailed applicants. This procedure, however will necessarily be slower than when both certificates are presented. The Sacramento office has already received approximately 200,000 applications and expects to make delivery of plates on those about February 8. We believe it is perfectly alright for a member to sign up his acreage as it comes into bearing, but to continue to keep some outside of the Association for the purpose of making an advantageous deal with some outside Independent and throwing this part of his fruit, in direct competition with the Exchange fruit in the markets throughout the country, is encouraging a bad practice and is unfair to the Grower who is properly giving his entire support to the Exchange Association. HOW TO PROCEED FOR AUTO LICENSES Will H. Marsh Makes an Official Announcement So many conflicting statements have been circulated concerning procedure necessary to make application for 1925 automobile license renewal, Will H. Marsh, Chief of the Division of Motor Vehicles has made the following official announcement: Branches of the Division of Motor Vehicles located in Los Angeles, San Diego, Fresno, San Francisco, Oakland and offices of the Automobile Club of Southern California. The California State Automobile Association and the Orange County Automobile Association will be permitted to accept applications from this date. New license plates will be issued by the branches and clubs upon presentation of the certificates of ownership (the pink) and the certificate of registration (the white). They will also be issued upon presentation of legible certificates of ownership. The automobile clubs will be permitted to accept certificates of registration for transmission to the division when it is found impossible to procure the certificate of ownership. Marsh advises, however, that every effort will be made by the clubs, according to agreement made with them today, to procure the pink certificate before accepting registration fee under the last named condition. MANY SITES COMPETE WITH FULLERTON OFFER Fullerton boosters making a strenuous effort to locate the southern branch of the University of California on the Bastanchury ranch met strong competition from numerous other communities Monday when committees appeared before the board of regents of the college. Most prominent sites offered were: San Diego, 1,000 acres. Fullerton, 1,000 acres. Monrovia, 716 acres. Oxnard, 600 acres. Palo Verdes, 1,000 acres. San Fernando, 800 acres. East San Fernando, 700 acres. Covina, 601 acres. Burbank, 800 acres. Chino, 1,000 acres. Pomona, 80 acres. Pasadena, 1,000 acres. Alhambra, 640 acres. Selection of a site, it developed, has been virtually placed in the hands of a committee of prominent Los Angeles citizens, and they seem to favor a site in the Beverly Hills district, in the city limits of Los Angeles. DEMANDS ECONOMY President Coolidge has adopted the policy in enforcing his campaign of economy, as promised to the people, in calling the leaders of his party as well as department chiefs to the White House and personally impressing on them the necessity of what he himself has said, "economy and still more economy." Recently when the chiefs of one bureau attempted in Congress to "log roll" for a larger appropriation than the Coolidge budget had allowed he lost no time in impressing on them that a repetition of this offense might result in some vacancies. The fact that at the head of the nation there is a man anxious to save millions of the people's money and yet fully appreciate it that such savings can only be made piece by piece. of legible certificates of ownership. Marsh advises, however, that every effort will be made by the clubs, according to agreement made with them today, to procure the pink certificate before accepting registration fee under the last named condition. A receipt will then be issued the applicant. When proper verification Maxwell House Coffee Try a can, use it half up and if you don’t like it bring back and get your full purchase price. As a result all departments of the government are beginning to reflect not perhaps willingly but with a little element of fear the President's ambitions. Meanwhile his basic rule is that with economy there must be increased efficiency. The co-operation of Secretary of the Treasury Mellon, of course, is genuine and originated within himself. Announcement is now made that the Treasury has reduced the public debt by almost a billion dollars within the last twelve months. This makes on a 4 per cent basis an additional saving of nearly $40,000,000 in year interest charges. Quite a saving of the peoples money. CAMPAIGN OF EDUCATION A careful survey of the program for popular education and its broad implications discloses its wide scope. It includes the education of the entire nation and the stamping out of illiteracy. It cannot be accomplished in a year, perhaps not in a decade. A generation may pass before its splendid objectives are attained. But even so, they are well worth the effort prepared to the lorious achievement of popular, democratic education, under which the poorest, and most lowly may have an unlimited educational opportunity; an opportunity restricted only by his capacity and desire? Think of what it will mean for the future of the notion all the children of all the people, studying, playing working together with one aim and in one spirit, not an arbitrary purpose superimposed upon them by an all-powerful government, but a co-operative patriotic purpose entered into popular, democratic education, under which the poorest, and most lowly may have an unlimited educational opportunity; an opportunity restricted only by his capacity and desire? Think of what it will mean for the future of the notion all the children of all the people, studying, playing working together with one aim and in one spirit, not an arbitrary purpose superimposed upon them by an all-powerful government, but a co-operative, patriotic purpose entered into willingly and joyfully as becomes the children of freemen. Class education, sectarian education, artistic education, will in time become as obsolete as the doctrine of divine right of kings. Class antagonisms; race antipathies, religious intolerances, artificial distinctions based on wealth and family connections must vanish inevitably. A man is to be valued for his character, his intellect, his capacity for work for his disinterested public service, his patriotic idealism. BUY YOUR BLANK BOOKS AND OFFICE SUPPLIES AT E. D.
