SERIOUS CHARGES AGAINST
KU KLUX DRY RAIDERS
Charged With Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.
Four of the investigators who took part in the famous dry raid engineered by Myers, Starbuck and Stuelke are facing a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Complaint has been filed with the district attorney against Mrs. E. S. Ward, Mrs. Jessie Wall, E. R. Wall and Frank Martin. Martin Shields has sworn to the complaint charging that his son, Ivory Shields, was the victim. The boy is under age and the father states in his complaint that Martin induced him to purchase a half pint of alcohol, most of which the four "Investilators" drank. They gave Shields a drink out of the bottle, and saved a portion of it to use as evidence against him. A warrant was issued by the district attorney's office for the four parties.

PROMISES SOMETHING NEW
A motion picture story of a decidedly different sort is promised for the could not be present because of illness, and at the last minute Mr. Louis L. Foley, vice principal of the Los Angeles Polytechnic High School was secured and made the address of the evening. He said there are four things which go toward making up a real, true sport and based his talk on these four laws.
First, obedience to law; second, respect for others; third, mastery of self; fourth, joy in service. Mr. Foley said that any young person who would do his best to live up to this motto was bound to help to a great extent in making clean sportsmanship.
The banquet was prepared by Mrs. Ashleigh and Mrs. Bode and was served by members of the girls' reserve. Music was furnished by Bob Thompson and Lawrence Mitchell, and the singing was led by Mr. Ashleigh

PROMISES SOMETHING NEW
A motion picture story of a decidedly different sort is promised for the California theater when King Vidor's "Wife of the Centaur" opens next Monday.
Adapted from the sensational novel by Cyril Hume, the picture tells, rather than the typical love story, the story of a man with many loves; a man who hates himself for his infidelity, but who can not resist temptation.
That every man, like the centaur of mythology, is "half man and half beast" is the theory on which Hume based his story. The "centaur" played by John Gilbert, is a romantic, picturesque figure, in whom conflicting emotions are always struggling. He holds a high idealistic love for one woman, but cannot resist the attraction of others.
Vidor has filmed the story, it is reported, with remarkable fidelity to the book, and has given it a screen translation with many striking scenes and contrasts.
Eleanor Boardman and Aileen Pringle are cast in the leading feminine roles, as the two women with whom the "centaur" is in love.
The supporting cast, which is an unusually large one, contains the names of such well-known players as William Haines, Betty Francisco, Philo McCullough, Jacquelin Gadsdon, Kate Price, Kate Lester, Lincoln Stedman, William Orlamond and others.
"Wife of the Centaur" was adapted to the screen by Douglas Doty. It is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offering.
HI-Y BANQUET
"Clean Sportsmanship" was the topic used at the Hi-Y meeting last Monday evening which opened with a banquet at the Y. M. C. A. building on South Philadelphia Street.
This meeting was planned by the local Hi-Y Club, under the direction of Warren L. Ashleigh, Y. M. C. A. secretary, and about 75 sat down at the banquet, including boys from the well known stage play, "The Strange Woman," by William J. Hurlburt. The picture was directed by Edmund Mortimer from an adaptation by Charles Kenyon.
The story concerns chiefly a young French writer, Inez Pierrefond, played by Miss Mason; who expounds the theory of love without marriage in a book which has created a sensation in Paris. John Hemingway of Dolphi, Iowa, who is in Paris to study, with his friend, Charles Abbey, meets the young writer and becomes infatuated with her. She responds to his love and both are happy. He asks her to return to America with him and she consents, but it is then that he learns her views on matrimony. Reared in conventional surroundings with iron-best things he had rules on social conduct, Hemingay is a part that way revolts, his ideal shattered. He is been overdone, ready to cast Inez aside until Abbey ruined the picture.

M. C. A. secretary, and about 75 sat down at the banquet, including boys from the athletic teams of the High School and members of the High School Faculty.
Francis Bode, Hi-Y president and also president of the High School Student body, acted as toastmaster of the evening, called upon Edwin Beebe and Harold Hussman, representing the Varsity and Light Weight Football teams, who gave a few words each regarding the work of the Football teams in striving for clean sportsmanship.
Miss Irene Jaques, girls' coach in the High School, Mr. Lawrence Sutherland and Mr. Arthur Fitzmorris, boys' coaches, were called upon and responded with a few appropriate words; stressing the fact that young people in their play are continually building character, and as the boys and girls of High School age play, just go are they likely to be in their business later in life. Mr. Clayes, principal of the High School, brought out the fact that the large majority of the good athletes of Anaheim High School were good students as well, standing very high in their classes; also saying that he was very proud to be the principal of a school where the coaches and those who work with the young people were making such good progress toward the ideal of clean sportsmanship.

convinces him that love is the big thing in life.
But, Delhi, Iowa, thinks differently and when the French lady, with her unusual views on matrimony arrives with Hemingway the social walls close in upon her. She fights back with the characteristic spirit of her race and with notable success until her case is laid before Hemingway's sweet old fashioned mother. To her surprise, the mother agrees to let her son and the girl he loves live their lives as they see fit. The mother's ready sacrifice of her traditions and ideals sways Inez and she decides that she, too, can forego some of her views. Marriage and happiness is the answer.

DENNY ADDS ANOTHER TO HIS TRIUMPH LIST
Wilson's "Oh, Doctor!" is Excellent Vehicle on Screen
Reginald Denny has added another triumph to the list of his screen achievements by his work as star in "Oh, Doctor!" Universal-Jewel, which will be shown at the California for Sunday only.
But the public who has acclaimed, not only his humorous personations, but his rapid-action recklessness, is due for a shock when he is introduced as an invalid whose principal activities consist in taking his own temperature with a clinical thermometer and drawing the stoppers from various bottles containing nostrums guaranteed to cure, no matter what the aliment. "Oh, Doctor!" is the screen version of the conviction that the big star must have devoted considerable time to studying the peculiarities of the hypochondriac.
The best opportunity for Denny to emphasize his subtility of character portrayal comes when, having fallen in love with his beautiful nurse, portrayed by Mary Astor, he battles with himself to overcome his obsession regarding his own health and to act like a normal human being.
He succeeds and then, spurred to greater endeavor by his desire to become like the heroes of the novels, she reads, he enters into a series of adventure that almost cause heart-failures to his aunt, his nurse and the three Shylocks who have loaned him money.
In this latter part of the story it is the Denny of "Sporting Youth" and other vigorous action pictures

SHOOTING AT SHADOWS.
Shooting at one's own shadow may impress the layman as quer practice for the United States Army, yet that is exactly what is being done today at Crissy Field, in the Presidio.
In order to train aerial machine gunners to fire on ground and moving targets, Major Delos, C. Emmons, commanding Crissy Field, has devised a scheme of conducting this practice while flying over the bay.
Two airplanes are used in the instructions; and while flying at varying altitudes the machine gunner of one plane fires at the moving shadow of the other on the water and the splash of the bullets shows plainly just how well the gunner is shooting.
Lewis machine guns, firing bursts of 5 to 100 shorts at a rate of 400 to 500 shots per minute, are used in this exercise.
Homely men generally make the best husbands—and they certainly ought to.
A really "good sport" is one whose wife and family think he is.
