THE MASONS AND THE KU KLUX KLAN The following article is taken from Hearts' International for April: August 27, 1923. Editor, Heart's International Magazine, 119 West 40th St., New York City. Dear Sir: The conflict between the Klan and the Masonic instructions can never be reconciled in one human heart. Thus it is that genuine Masons—Masons who are such in their hearts—can not be Klansmen, and can not welcome with true brotherly love Klansmen into their lodges. Respectfully yours, D. J. MEYERHARDT, Editor Masonic Herald, Rome Ga. A number of the Grand Masters of the Grand Lodge of Masons have publicly condemned the Klan and stated that it would be un-Masonic for a Mason to join. Notwithstanding this some of the most prominent Masons have become members and actively support the organization. Many of the Kleagles, whose duties are to organize Klans, are Masons. The sentiment of Masonry toward the Ku Klux Klan has been very definitely expressed by Judge Arthur S Tompkins in a letter to the writer, reproduced on page 57, describes the Masons as against all groups of men and individuals who seek directly or indirectly to promote the spirit of religious and racial hatred and bitterness. In his annual address in New York City, May, 1923, the Grand Master Masonic Government. If by that they mean that Masons had much to do with the early history of our Republic, its birth and growth, they are right, but if intended in the broader sense, they are wrong and such statements are only calculated to cause controversy and resentment. We hear people talk about a white man's government, and a Protestant government. These statements are only true in the sense that there are more white people and more Protestants in our country than there are people of other colors and creeds. Our government is not exclusively a white man's Government, or a Catholic, or a Protestant or a Jewish or a Gentile government, in a sense that the liberties, privileges, opportunities, and all the good things of the American Republic are for one class alone or that one class or race or creed may dominate all others in respect of their liberties, rights and privileges, and never will be such a Government if the ideals and purposes of the patriot fathers, the founders of our Republic, are perpetuated. Ours is a great democracy, made up of all kinds and classes, from all nations and all tongues and creeds. It is a Government as Lincoln declared "Of the people, by the people and for the people," of and by and for all the people, Jew and Gentile, Protestant and Catholic, white or black, and we cannot set up class against class, labor against capital, Protestant against Catholic, Jew against Gentile, the white man against the black, without impairing the stability and imperiling the perpetuity of our Republic. Our democracy cannot permanently endure unless all classes, creeds and races are allowed to live and work and worship freely and peaceably under the equal protection of the law. Any movement that is calculated to fan and intensify the fires of religious bigotry or class antagonism or race prejudices will bring peace and comforts of the earth." We also find the feelings being sent out for another Kleagle who at St. Joseph, Mo.: "Sept. 11, 1921—Mr. ell, of St. Joseph, is Conon of the Grand Lodge in St. Louis, September Please get someone to get him into this order as he will have a view of the Grand Lodge order and forbid all At the same time, Master, Past Master, for Deacon will have Grand Lodge. Tompkins in a letter to the writer, reproduced on page 57, describes the Masons as against all groups of men and individuals who seek directly or indirectly to promote the spirit of religious and racial hatred and bitterness. In his annual address in New York City, May, 1923, the Grand Master makes this statement: "In conclusion I want to urge our brethren throughout our Grand Jurisdiction the importance of holding fast to the traditions and preserving the landmarks and ancient charges of our Great Fraternity, and not permitting the good name of our fraternity to be stained by association with any organization or group of men whose mission is under the guise of Americanism to promote and cultivate the spirit of religious and racial hatred and bitterness. The cornerstone of free masonry is the doctrine of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man and by the Holy Bible, the Great Light on Masonry, we are taught "of one blood made He all the nations of the earth." Masonry recognizes the right of every man to worship God freely and according to the dictates of his own conscience and in his own way and according to the forms and ceremonies of his choice. This is not only sound Masonic doctrine but is one of the foundation stones upon which our Republic was established. Religious liberty, equality of opportunity and the equal protection of the law for all creeds, classes, and men of all nationalities who come to our shores, are not only cardinal American principles but are expressly guaranteed by the law of the land and any group or society that undertakes to usurp the law and substitute itself for the duly constituted instrumentalities of government and interferes with property rights or inflicts punishment or attempts to redress real or imaginary wrongs, without due process of law is not only un-American and un-Masonic but is essentially lawless. I have heard it stated by over-zealous masons that our government is a WITH COURTESY Thanksgiving The officers and directors of the Southern Counties Gas Company are grateful for another year of progress and continued development. They are grateful for the growth and prosperity that has come to Anaheim and to the fifty other cities and communities served by the company. They appreciate the privilege of rendering a necessary service in a hundred thousand homes of Southern California and of being able to contribute substantially to the health and happiness of those they serve. Southern Counties Gas Company District Superintendent bring peace and concord to the peoples of the earth." We also find the following instructions being sent out from St. Louis to another Kleagle who was at the time at St. Joseph, Mo.: "Sept. 11, 1921—Mr. Orestes Mitchell, of St. Joseph, is Grand Senior Deacon of the Grand Lodge which meets in St. Louis, September 20, 21 and 22. Please get someone behind him and get him into this order before the 20th, as he will have a vote on the action of the Grand Lodge so condemn this order and forbid all Masons to join. At the same time, every Worshipful Master, Past Master, Senior and Junior Deacon will have a vote in the Grand Lodge. Please, therefore, take up with all your members and start a movement quickly to land every one of these people possible by the 20th, or at least, see every one of them and explain our order thoroughly. This is an S. O. S! Please do not fail to land every one who is likely to be at this Grand Lodge session, provided they are eligible." The "Missouri Freemason," a Masonic weekly published in St. Louis, in an article dated July 30, 1921, stated its position toward the Klan: "***Right here and now is a good place and time to make it emphatic that Freemasonry has nothing to do with the revival of the Ku Klux Klan either as relates to any of its past characteristics or its new and revised attributes." *****It is an attribute of the descendants of the men who gave freedom to these United States of America to utilize reprehensible methods for the correction of alleged evils. Freemasons do not take the law into their own hands, no matter how much punishment may be needed. It is always a safe conclusion that when an offense is committed against the law Freemasonry is far from being behind "The Klan calls itself the invisible empire. There is no place for an invisible empire in the United States. The mask is the refuge of the coward. No Scottish Rite Freemason can consistently be a Klansman. No Klansman should pass the ballot box in any Scottish Rite Body." The same view is expressed by William F. Weiler, Grand Master of Wisconsin, when he says that the Klan is an organization un-American, un-Masonic in its methods and practise, obnoxious to society, and a menace to the peace and dignity of the State: Affiliation with it can only bring Masonry into disrepute." It does not take the law into its own hands to correct an evil. “There are plenty of men who would like to cast a shadow upon the reputation of Freemasonry, but they will have to try some other method than that of accusing members of the Order as an Order of meting out punishment, as self-appointed guardians of the whipping post or of the lynching tree.” As the Masonic bodies are not in sympathy with the Klan movement or its teachings of religious intolerance and race hatred which are inimical to the teachings of Masonry, leading Masons wonder how the Klan succeeded in obtaining so many Masons. As early as the fall of 1921 a Deputy to the Supreme Council of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Freemasonry sensed the danger of the Klan, saying: “This Ku Klux Klan is to be avoided as one would a pestilence.” We have found before us a letter from the Editor of the Masonic Herald, of Rome Georgia, a Masonic publication endorsed by the Grand Lodge of Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Mississippi, in which he says: "The Masonic fraternity welcomes alike the Jew and the Christian, the native born and the foreign born, and teaches that the two should dwell together in brotherly love and harmony. No Masonic Temple or Apartments must be used for their purpose, and let every Mason who is tempted to join the Klan consider well if he can harmonize his obligations as a Mason with the principles of the Klan." Dr. Frederick W. Hamilton, a former President of Tufts College and a thirty-third degree Mason, Supreme Council Deputy for Massachusetts, has denounced the Klan.
