SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S REMARKABLE GAIN One Tenth Nation's Population Increase Credited to Us In the last four years Southern California has to its credit more than one-tenth of the gain in population credited to the entire United States in the same period, according to a statement in Southern California Business official magazine for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. This is a broad statement and if the figures on which the statement is based had not been compiled by the Census Bureau they might be questioned. Also in this connection it is interesting to note that Los Angeles city alone during the past four ears has scored more than one-fifteenth of the total gain in population credited to the entire United States. The figures given out by the Census Bureau show that the average annual gain in population for the past four years in the United States has been 1,778,750 or a total for the four years of 7,115,000. Now the interesting feature of it is that Los Angeles alone since the census report of 1920 which showed 576,000 inhabitants in that city, has grown in four years to at least 1,075,000, or a gain of 498,327. In almost doubling her population in four years Los Angeles, as the figures will show, has gained more than one-fifteenth of the entire increase in population in the United States. The same figures hold good for Southern California. It is generally conceded that the increase of California outside of Los Angeles city in the past four years has run well over 250,000. Adding this to the gain of Los Angeles population and there is a potential gain for Southern California. Delegates coming from the southern states will be met in Los Angeles and escorted to San Francisco by automobile. Other parties, including thirty engineers of the Bureau of Public Roads, will enter the state from the North and motor from Sacramento to San Francisco. At the conclusion of the convention, the California Highway department assisted by the California State Automobile Association and the Auto-mobile Club of Southern California, has planned a motor trip for the entire convention from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This will give the visiting officials and their families an opportunity to see many miles of California state highways and a considerable section of the state. Nationwide interest is being taken in the convention because its recommendations with regard to pending federal aid legislation are expected to have great weight with Congress. Western engineers and officials are emphasizing the importance of the meeting to this part of the country. They see in it, opportunity to acquaint in- way of the Bay district, will also be in the program.
