The New York World, Democratic Legion, has issued another pledge on behalf of the ex-service men of California to observe Defense Day and to put the opposition talk of "Hair brained Pacifists" down.
"The American Legion is heartily in favor of and approves the National plan for Defense Day," declares Commander Coombs. "If a National Defense Day is not necessary, then why have an army, navy and marine corps why have forts on the hills above the golden gate; why have a submarine base in the south; why have lighthouses and lightships to protect the commerce of the seven seas?"
"Preparedness makes for better living, more economy in government, state and city, in business and in homes; it teaches unselfishness, and above all, self sacrifice," says Coombs.
James K. Fisk, state adjutant of the Legion, has received an acknowledgment from President Coolidge approving the Defense Day resolution adopted by the Legion at the recent state convention at Santa Cruz.
The Daughters of the American Revolution through their President-general, Lora Haines Cook, has also expressed approval of the stand taken by the California Legionnaires.

ONCE MORE THEY
KEEP US OUT OF WAR
The New York World, Democratic organ in chief, criticizing National Defense Day for partisan reasons, prints a cartoon depicting Europe, in the character of a widow mourning the loss of her sons, gazing reproachfully at the aura of "Mobilization day" above an American flag.
Europe is engaging in no such plous reflections except in the sickly imaginations of American pacifism. Europe has more men under arms than before the World War. These armies are not maintained because of any fear of aggression from the United States. Their existence is no fault of the United States, the drivel of our home grown maligners of American purposes and motives to the contrary notwithstanding.
No being anywhere in the world but an American pacifist, who does not fear what one or more of these armies might do to us, but professes to be scared about what our insignificant military forces might do to some other nation, will be at all alarmed over a day devoted to an inventory of American national defense resources.
The American people paid the price of one "kept us out of war" campaign with attendant unpreparedness for war. It is not unnatural that the same political bunko artists who engineered the gigantic game of 1916 should be trying to put it over again. But it would be unnatural if the American people after their former experience should pay any attention to them.
Such reasonable preparedness for national defense as Washington enjoined no more pushes this country toward war than vaccination causes small pox, sea walls invite floods or precautatives are preventatives, not causes and the puerality of the piffling pacifists is unable to distinguish between a cause and a preventative.
For more than 75 years the United States has not gone to war except from necessity in a righteous cause. No American who comprehends his country believes that this nation will ever misuse its strength in an avoid-

JOINED no more passes this country toward war than vaccination causes small pox, sea walls invite floods or precautions are preventatives, not causes and the puerality of the piffling pacifists is unable to distinguish between a cause and a preventative.
For more than 75 years the United States has not gone to war except from necessity in a righteous cause. No American who comprehends his country believes that this nation will ever misuse its strength in an avoidable war. The better this nation is prepared for war the less chance of involvement in war there will be. When all the forces of law and order disarm themselves while the lawless still carry guns chaos will ensue. When the one great power of the world which has shown its disinterestedness in international relations disbands its army and sink its navy, it will lose its influence as a force for good among nations and will become the prey of any greedy power that may decide to attack. This is the common sense view of the situation and it fully explains why alleged Americans who habitually depreciate their own country cannot understand it.
National Defense day needs no finer vindication than the character of the opposition to it which has arisen. It comes from people who are always ready to discredit America, and from demagogues who think there may be few votes in joining the outcry of the pinks, reds and yellows who claim it is evidence of mental breadth and moral height to be unpatriotic.

100,000 Prospective New Homes Swept Away
Secretary Melon of the United States Treasury estimates that the people of the United States invested $500,000,000 in worthless stocks and securities in 1923.
It came from everywhere. That money was swindled out of people in every state, every county, every town and city. It didn't come from any particular region.
It was taken from the folks who needed HOMES, from farmers who needed BARNS, from unfortunates here, there and everywhere who were actually in need of many, many things in the line of shelter.
At $5000 each that money would have built 100,000 beautiful home would have provided shelter of an attractive character for half a million people.
Make up your mind that the best investment you can make for yourself and your family is in a HOME.
If you already have a Home you can help others get one by placing your surplus funds with the Building and Loan Association, at six per cent and you get your interest check regularly each quarter, without having to think of the details. They do the rest and HOMES, Beautiful Homes for worthy people are the result.
