News in Brief—Latest accounts from France state that Marshal Bazaine had escaped from the island of Santa Marguerita sometime during last Sunday night. The details of the manner in which he successfully made his escape are unknown except that he used a rope ladder and got on board a vessel bound for Italy. The night was dark and stormy, Prof Blane of London who has been experimenting with a flying machine was killed on the 9th of July while attempting to fly from a balloon to the earth. He was suspended from the balloon by a rope with the wings of his flying machine extended. When the balloon had risen to a considerable height the rope was cut and the professor descended with frightful rapidity to the ground and was killed. They had at latest accounts reached a depth of one hundred and thirty feet and every indication gave promise of soon reaching flowing water. The schooner "Mose" loaded with lumber for James McFadden of Santa Ana entered Newport Harbor last week and discharged at the wharf. It sailed on Wednesday with 122 tons of grain for San Francisco. We would call the attention of our country friends to a change in the advertisement of Dr. J. C. Phillips, surgeon-dentist. Richard Fitzgerald, a native of Ireland and aged 27 years, shot himself twice about 6 o'clock yesterday morning, death following immediately afterward. Mr. Fitzgerald was severely injured last week while riding. The act was undoubtedly caused by depression of mind following the accident. He was visiting Mr. E. T. Cahill and left several letters, one addressed to Mr. Cahill enclosing a check for $100 to defray funeral expenses and thanking him for his many kindnesses. On Monday last a fire occurred on the plains of the San Joaquin rancho which threatened at one time to prove seriously destructive to the luxuriant feed, with which he rancho is now covered. As soon as he fire was discovered Mr. Charles French, the agent for the company, started for the scene taking with him every available means to subdue the flames. The fire was extinguished before doing any severe damages. Eight hundred votes have been added to the great register of Los Angeles county since last election. Ruell Ingram of Garden Grove was married at that place on Tuesday afternoon to Miss Julia M. Abbey. The newly wedded couple have taken up their residence on the Abbey ranch within the range of the coast redwood i.e., Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Lands recently acquired by the state through purchase and gift are park areas containing stands of old virgin redwoods unsuited for experimental work. Such a University Forest could most advantageously be built up entirely of cut over redwood lands of which there is a total of more than 500,000 acres, only about 20 per cent of which is devoted to or suitable for agriculture. Because of the world wide fame of the redwood tree, its vigor of reproduction, its rapidity of growth, and its massive proportions at maturity, a University Forest Experiment Station here would attract students and travelers from many states and countries. It would soon rival in interest the school forests of eastern and European institutions and if of sufficient size would eventually become practically self-supporting. "Examples of such University forests are to be found in many parts of the country, and the lumber industry has usually been very generous in donating land or assisting in defying the cost of their establishment. The Cloquet Forest Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota, which I visited, has a staff of three men who are conducting silvicultural experiments of great importance and value to the lumberman of Minnesota who assisted in starting the Station fifteen years ago. It is looked upon as one of the outstanding features of the Minnesota Forest school, and in spite of the slow growth of its tree species, the director of the station expects it to be virtually supporting within the next ten years. The excursion to Avalon on Tuesday morning was quite largely attended some 300 people making the trip over on the Hermosa. The train left here at 8 o'clock and arrived at Newport at 9 at which time the boat sailed for the island at noon. The excursionists partook of dinner and supper at Avalon and the return trip being taken at 6:30 o'clock. Newport was reached at 9:30 and Anaheim at 10:40. Among those from Anaheim were F. Ruhman and wife, Mrs. Shanley. Mrs. Nick Bittner, Fred Maurer and wife. Mrs. Henderson and grand daughter, Jos. It is looked upon as one of the outstanding features of the Minnesota Forest school, and in spite of the slow growth of its tree species, the director of the station expects it to be virtually self supporting within the next ten years. Being situated on a main highway where it is visited by thousands of people each year, this station is an object lesson of what good forest management can accomplish in a region where on all sides of it are the veritable deserts resulting from unrestricted lumbering and uncontrolled fires. The Harvard Forest, near Petersham, Massachusetts, is noted as an experimental area where the most intensive silviculture in the north east is being carried on. Syracuse university has two small forest areas near the campus and a larger one in the Adirondacks which has recently been augmented by the gift of 1,000 acres from a portion of this forest school. Examples might be multiplied and each of these forest experiment stations is a demonstration that constructive handling of forest lands pays big dividends in beauty and recreation, as well as in board feet of lumber. "Forestry is making rapid strides in the redwood region but timber owners there will need much assistance in solving silvicultural problems of propagation and growth. This assistance can be given if the University is properly equipped with such outdoor forest laboratory as the one suggested. It is to be hoped that such a University Forest may become a reality in the near future." TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS Although greater efforts than ever before are being made to protect motorists and pedestrians alike on the highways, there are still a large number of unnecessary traffic accidents. Many rules have been suggested; and the public safety department of the Automobile Club of Southern California believes that observance of the old fashioned "golden rule" will go a long way toward making the highways safe. From the many suggestions for safe driving, the following are regarded as important that they have been called the ten commandments of driving. YOU ARE HEREBC DIRECTED TO APPEAR and answer the Complaint in an action entitled as above, brought against you in the Superior Court of the County of Orange, State of California, within ten days after the service on you of this Summons, if served within this County, or within thirty days, if served elsewhere. And you are hereby notified that unless you appear and answer as above required the said plaintiffs will take judgement for any money or damages demanded in the complaint, as arising upon contract, or it will apply to the Court for any other selfef demanded in the complaint. "Why the Redwood region? Because the experimental work in the pine regions of the Sierra is being well taken care of by the investigative program of the U.S. Forest Service, which program will undoubtedly be much expanded when the contemplated California Forest Experiment Station is authorized by Congress. Lands for such an experimental forest may be set aside at any time in the pine region from lands already in National ownership, but neither the Nation nor the state owns any suitable lands" FROM THE MANY SUGGESTIONS FOR SAFE DRIVING, THE FOLLOWING ARE REGARDED AS EC IMPORTANT THAT YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF DRIVING. THEY ARE: 1. Drive on the right side of the road; it is just as good as the left. 2. Slow down when approaching a cross road; it is nearly as dangerous as a railroad crossing. 3. Look out for children. You can never tell what they will do, and you are always in the wrong if you hit one. 4. Try to help instead of hinder the traffic officer; he is there for your good and he's got a tough job. 5. Be sure that your "dimmers" really dim; it's no joke driving into a blinding glare, as you probably know. 6. Read and obey the warning signs they are not put up as ornaments. 7. If you feel you've got to speed—do it where it won't kill anybody but yourself. 8. When making minor repairs, stop where your car may been seen from both directions; otherwise you may stop longer than you anticipate. 9. Speeeding around corners is a straight route to the hospital. Don't pass a stopped street car. Some day the jury may call it manslaughter. 10. Use discretion. The fact that you had the right of way don't bring anybody back to life, least of all yourself. It came from everywhere. That money was swindled out of people in every state, every county, every town and city. It didn't come from any particular region. It was taken from the folks who needed HOMES, from farmers who needed BARNS, from unfortunates here, there and everywhere who were actually in need of many, many things in the line of shelter.
