GLASS FACTORY WILL BE PIONEER PLANT ON THE INDUSTRIAL SITE
West Virginia Lamphilimney Company to Begin Immediate Construction of Buildings and Expects to be in Operation Within Two Months — Will Employ 200 Men at the Start — Many Orders Already Booked for Fall Delivery — Community Development Co., Formed by Chamber of Commerce.
The most important piece of news the people of Anaheim have heard in many a year broke Tuesday afternoon when the Chamber of Commerce announced that a big glass factory had been secured for this city. An acre of ground in the industrial site has
HUSBAND DIES IN ACCIDENT
WIFE COMMITTS SUICIDE
Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Haigh Buried at Loma Vista Cemetery
Funeral services were held at McAulay's parlors, Fullerton, Saturday for Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Haigh, who had made their home at 845 N. Dickel street in this city Haigh, who was 23 years of age, was employed by the Amazon Drilling Co., at Whittier. Last Sunday he fell from a derrick and broke his neck. As he still lived after the accident he was taken to the Angelus hospital in Los Angeles, where he lingered until Thursday.
Mrs. Anna Haigh, his wife, 19 years of age, was with him at the hospital as much as the rules would permit and stopped with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. C. A Barker on Griffith Avenue the balance of the time. Two hours after the news was received at the Barker home Thursday that Haigh was dead, Mrs. Halgh shot herself with a revolver. She was rushed to the receiving hospital but died shortly after arriving there.
Mrs. Haigh's mother, Mrs. Osborne, and a brother and sister live at Placentia Haigh's family reside in Ventura county.
The most important piece of news the people of Anaheim have heard in many a year broke Tuesday afternoon when the Chamber of Commerce announced that a big glass factory had been secured for this city. An acre of ground in the industrial site has been transferred to the West Virginia Lamp Company and the work of construction on the buildings will begin without an hour's unnecessary delay.
This company has been in successful operation in its home state for 21 years. Some years ago, attracted by the gas yield by Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma fields a branch was built at Shreveport, La., which is also in a flourishing condition. For some time President Thomas McBride and other officials of the company have been quietly looking for a site on the Pacific Coast. The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce got in communication with them and after an investigation the officials decided that this was the most advantageous point for their plant. The deal was soon closed and an acre of ground in the industrial site purchased and within two months, it is believed, the plant will be ready for operation.
Being a station of three great railway systems Anaheim is an advantageous point for a factory, but one of the chief factors that induced the company to locate here is the quality of the natural gas used here. According to Mr. McBride a test made of the gas at various places showed that Anaheim gas contained 1174 British Thermal units, Glendale gas tested 825 and Los Angeles 615, little better than half the heating strength of Anaheim gas. It requires a powerful heat to melt glass sand, consequently this was the chief inducement in determining the company to locate here. The factory will burn from three million to seven million cubic feet of gas per day.
While the name of the plant is the West Virginia Lamp Chimney Co., it does not confine its production to lamp chimneys. Its product includes fruit jars, bottles and numerous articles that are made of glass. Already enough orders have been booked to keep the plant running for weeks. The largest order received so far is from the California Fruit Assembler.
Mr. and Mrs. C. A Barker on Griffith Avenue the balance of the time. Two hours after the news was received at the Barker home Thursday that Haigh was dead, Mrs. Haigh shot herself with a revolver. She was rushed to the receiving hospital but died shortly after arriving there.

IMPERIAL RANCHER
FAVORS SAMPLE
Opposes Construction of All-American Canal Which Would Be a Grevious Burden to County
William P. Mansfield of Brawley was in town a day or two ago on his way to Hermosa Beach, where his family is spending the summer. Mr. Mansfield is an enthusiastic supporter of Senator Sample of San Diego for Congress from the Eleventh district, and says Imperial County will give him a very flattering vote. He met with a number of leading Republicans in the northern part of Orange county and found a very strong sentiment prevailing here for the San Diego man.
Mr. Mansfield is a farmer whose ranch is near Brawley, and he says that he and his neighbors are emphatically opposed to the so-called All-American canal, which Congressman Swing has been favoring at Washington. This canal, he states, would be more than one hundred miles in length over many miles of sandy stretches and in his opinion is utterly impracticable. Its cost would be tremendous and much more than the Imperial taxpayers care to assume. He states the Imperial ranchers do not favor the canal at all, and that it is proposed by people who would be largely benefited by its construction.
In his section of Imperial county, a canal sixty foot wide brings water from mthe Colorado river and the county is flourishing and growing rapidly. Farmers have shipped an excellent cantelope crop and the cotton crop is looking splendidly.
Mr. Mansfield said he would be in this section of the county again in the near future and proposes to discuss the congressional situation quite fully to the voters of Orange county.

Its product includes fruit jars, bottles and numerous articles that are made of glass. Already enough orders have been booked to keep the plant running for weeks. The largest order received so far is from the California Fruit Association, which placed an order for one million fruit juicers.
This company has been established for more than twenty years and is a prosperous concern. It is not asking a bonus from the people of Anaheim but will operate on its own capital. It came to this city because of the advantages the city had to offer for a plant of this character. Its location here will undoubtedly influence officials of other plants seeking locations in Southern California.
The company will start operations here with a force of 200 men on the payroll. Forty of these will be expert glass blowers from West Virginia. These men will draw from $15 to $20 per day in wages. They are the highest paid mechanics in the world, as it requires about eight years to make an expert workman out of raw material.
As there is a profitable field for the company's products on the coast, it is expected that the plant will rapidly expand and the force of employees gradually increased.
This is the first of a number of industries which the Chamber expects shortly to locate on the industrial site. As an aid to the work the community development company was organized at the meeting Tuesday, a representation from each of the newspapers being a member.

Richard Krebs and Family Drive Down and Spend the Day With Relatives
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Krebs of Azusa, their sons, Albert and William accompanied by their wives and Miss Lillian Krebs were in town on Sunday spending the day with relatives and friends. Mr. Krebs is one of Anaheim's pioneer residents, having come here in 1877. He was for many years superintendent of the Dreyfus winery and was one of the most efficient manufacturers of wines and grape brandies in the state of California. His products attained such a rare excellence that they were shipped all over the world and compared favorably with those manufactured in foreign countries. A number of years ago he removed to Azusa, where he continued in the wine making business, but has for several years devoted his attention to the raising of oranges and is at the present time shipping some of the finest fruit to the eastern market. The day was very happily spent here with old time friends and relatives and in the evening Mr. Krebs returned with his family to Azusa.

Application for authority to join onto the outfall sewer was made by Buena Park and La Habra through representatives of these towns appearing at the joint meeting of the city councils held at the city hall in Anaheim Friday evening. No official action was taken as Mayor Stubbs of Santa Ana, chairman of the meet can spend their vacations and be built up by the latest methods the state can give through its public health nurses.
There are 27 children whose homes are not such that they can be quickly restored, and it is the purpose of these two organizations to build them up if possible before or by school time.
This camp is situated in the Trabuco canyon just above the silver mine. It is open to the public for inspection, and in fact they welcome visitors any time.
This $1000 will not be adequate to furnish the camp, pay and support a good cook, a helper, and a nurse through the summer, therefore the Women's clubs are importuning the communities which they represent to lend a helping hand.

MAKING BIDS FOR UNIVERSITY BRANCH
REGENTS OF STATE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION LOOKING FOR NEW LOCATION
Branch Will Be Moved From Los Angeles If Suitable Site Is Secured and Proper Inducements Offered—Several Points in Orange County are Being Offered — Associated Chambers of Commerce to Discuss the Matter Tonight — Other Counties Also After It.
Where in Orange county will be located the entire southern branch of the University of California? Like all other California institutions, the University has outgrown its present location. A big area is needed, say 500 acres to properly accommodate the institution worthy to represent the big half of the state of California. All sorts of places are offering sites and Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, as well as Orange County are entering the field. What action Orange County will take will be discussed at the meeting of the Associated Chamber of Commerce which will be held at Costa Mesa this (Thursday) evening. Delegates from several Orange County towns will attend the meeting of the Associated Chambers to urge the claims of their sections but at the same time to work together to get the best for the University and for Orange county.
At a meeting Thursday night at the Chamber of Commerce at Fullerton initial steps were taken toward bringing to Orange county the entire branch, now located in Los Angeles. It is understood that members of the Board of Regents and also the faculty have reached a decision to secure more room for the rapidly growing institution, and it is proposed to dispose of the Los Angeles holdings and purchase a site of approximately 500 acres at some point not far distant from Los Angeles.
Sites have been offered by La Habra, Pomona, Riverside, Irvine, Olive County Wants — Expects to Make A Vigorous Campaign.
S. C. Hartranft announces this week that he expects to make a vigorous campaign for the Republican nomination for the assembly, and is planning to make a number of speeches throughout the county before the August primaries are held. Mr. Hartranft was reluctant to enter the race but the insistence of hundreds of leading people throughout the county finally overcome his scruples. He is not ambitious for the office, but being an able champion of the policies which a vast majority of the people of Orange county favor, he was induced to set aside his scruples and allow his name to be used. He is a man of sound judgment, of unimpeachable character, and is a forceful speaker, therefore he is a fitting man to represent this populous and wealthy county in the state legislature.
Mr. Hartranft's chief occupation is the growing of citrus fruits on his ranch between this city and Fullerton. He is also president of the Anaheim Citrus Association, a director in one of the Anaheim banks, and president of the Fullerton High school board. In a statement Monday he said:
"I stand first and foremost, for the maintenance and enforcement of the laws, federal and state, which tend to protect the homes of California and make for conditions in which we may guide our children in clean and upright living. I believe in the Wright Act and the Volstead Act."
"I believe in a business like administration of our state and national governments, such an administration as being given this state by Governor Richardson and the nation by President Coolidge. I believe in economy in government to the end that the burden of taxes may be lightened."
"There are other problems more local in character, in which I am deeply interested and to which I propose to devote my best efforts if I am cohesen to represent this county in the legislature."
"I believe there should be a just reapportionment of the political districts of California to the end that such a project should command the aid and co-operation of the state. I shall work for the co-operation of the state and the counties interested in the basin of the Santa Ana river for the purpose of advancing that development."
He explained the situation the plant is facing now, and stated that there would be nothing in violation of the contract permitted to be dumped into the sewer.
Engineer Knox made a brief report on the construction work being accomplished, giving some of the reasons for the delay in completing the work. Bad odors and rough seas were ascribed for the delay and it was stated that at present there remains 192 feet of pipe to be laid into the ocean, which should be completed in five weeks at the present progress, with fifty-eight feet being laid each week. The payroll on the job is approximately $1700 per month, said Knox and the delay is costing the cities a considerable increase in the original amount estimated.
It was also discovered that employees of the treatment plant are working twelve hours a day, in violation of the state law, which provides a severe penalty for such violations. Engineer Knox was instructed to remedy this condition at once and make arrangements to work three continuous shifts of eight hours each, for which he was instructed to pay the scale of wages which he deemed reasonable.
OPEN AIR HEALTH CAMP PROMOTED
Open air health camp was promoted by the Women's Federated Club of Orange County to take care of the underweight children from all sections of the county whose health is seriously undermined.
They called in conjunction with them the anti-Tuberculosis society of the county, they also appealed to the Supervisors who set aside $1000 for the establishment of this camp in the mountains where these children bringling to Orange county the entire branch, now located in Los Angeles. It is understood that members of the Board of Regents and also the faculty have reached a decision to secure more room for the rapidly growing institution, and it is proposed to dispose of the Los Angeles holdings and purchase a site of approximately 500 acres at some point not far distant from Los Angeles.
Sites have been offered by La Habra, Pomona, Riverside, Irvine, Olive El Modena and Fullerton. The last four of these are in Orange county and the object of the meeting was to stimulate interest in one of these sites.
S. C. Hartranft presided at the meeting and W. J. Carmichael, City Trustee of Fullerton was named a committee of one to present the matter at the next meeting of the Orange County Associated Chambers of Commerce, which meets at Costa Mesa on the 31st inst. A committee to confer with the Board of Regents and the faculty of the university will be named at that meeting, it was announced.
That the university, which was first organized as a teachers' college, has outgrown its present quarters was the statement made at the meeting by E.J. Marks, local attorney and a member of the Fullerton Alumni Association of the University. The present site comprises approximately 40 acres, which, with the buildings is estimated to be worth several million dollars. Land which has been offered as a site for the branch of the university is priced around $3000 an acre. Should the faculty and Board of Regents agree upon a site, the matter would have to be passed upon by the State Legislature.
The modern road to fame is built by press agents.

Anaheim Post Commended for Resenting Action of Club
The Orange County Council of the American Legion, at its meeting at Balboa Thursday night, unanimously adopted a resolution consuring the pose to devote my best efforts if I am cohesen to represent this county in the legislature.
"I believe there should be a just reapportionment of the political districts of California to the end that such a project should command the aid and co-operation of the state. I shall work for the co-operation of the state and the counties interested in the basin of the Santa Ana river for the purpose of advancing that development."
"The development of Orange county's coast is dependent in a large degree upon the building of the coast highway. That project has already begun by the state highway commission. I propose to give the commission every possible encouragement in the completion of an improvement so important to this county.
"My candidacy for the office of assemblyman was announced only after many of the leading people of Orange county had urged me to take such a step. I have no desire to hold office. I do desire to be of service to the county. Being a candidate I shall make, the best campaign I know how to make. I submit my record as a citizen of Orange county for fifteen years to the judgment of the voters. If that record seems to the voters to qualify me for such service as an assemblyman may give, I shall be glad of their support."

KU KLUX KLAN HOLDS
BIG DEMONSTRATION
Parade Down Center Street and initiate a Thousand New Members
Anaheim was invaded by the Ku Ku Klux Klan Tuesday night and the populace surrendered to the invaders without a struggle. It was probably greatest demonstration of order ever staged in Southern California. Many thousands of people from all points of compass came into autos and late comers found it necessary to drive into country to find parking space.
It is estimated that ten thousand people gathered at the municipal park where it had been announced that thousand candidates, all from Orange county would be initiated into order. The candidates were ranged in a solid body, fifteen men to the line and after a rigid inspeccion oath was administered to them. Horace Lackay, national organizer for Ku Ku Klux Klan, was also listed for an address.
After listening to a statement by Supervisor William Schumacher Thursday night, the city trustees agreed to join with the county in a meat inspection system. The supervisors have drawn up an ordinance providing for a rigid inspection of meats, but without co-operation of eight incorporated cities in the county it would have little weight. The plan would cost eight cities $200 per month, pro-rated according to population. The trustees favored the proposal and are ready to join with the county should other cities agree.
A proposal was received from American Legion offering services of that body in handling traffic on streets on Saturdays and Sundays. It was proposed that five or six of boys be appointed deputy marshals without pay and they will assist regular police in keeping traffic untangled at busy crossings when needed. The members of post will probably take turn about acting as traffic officers. Chairman Knipe of ordinance committee reported that it would be necessary to amend police ordinance as there were several more men on force now than existing ordinance permitted. Of chief interest to the thousands of spectators who lined the streets was the parade down center street. Six hundred gowned and hooded knights, but with their faces bare marched down the street, headed by the Los Angeles Ku Klux band. It is said that all the uniformed men in the procession were from Los Angeles. The procession marched silently down the street and turned toward the park at Helena, the band playing a march.
Overhead two airplanes hovered during the meeting. They were brilliantly illuminated with electric lights one representing the firey cross and the lights on the other forming the letters "K. K. K." One of them dropped a number of bombs which made a loud noise but did no harm.

adopted. It also provided for the appointment by Mayor Metcalf of a committee of seven citizens to join with the American Legion in arranging for the observance of the day in this city.
It was decided by the trustees to employ the band for two open air concerts at the city park, one to be given last night and the other next Wednesday night. The charge being $130. Should the citizens show their appreciation by attending in sufficient numbers it is probable the concerts will be continued.
Sidewalk improvements were ordered in several sections including west side of Thalla street, south of Center street; west side of Olive street between Santa Ana and Water streets; Santa Fe and Topeka streets; Third South street west of Lemon street; East side of Walnut street between Broadway and Center street and several others.
SHIPPING ORANGE JUICE EAST
California orange juice is being shipped to New York, Boston and Chicago in car lots in glass-lined, enameled refrigerator cars. A new process which preserves the juice in excellent condition is employed in preparing the product for shipment.
A different process, solar vitalizing is to be used to preserve orange juice manufactured at Covina in a plant erected there a few months ago. From this point the beverage is to be shipped in gallon bottles to Eastern markets, without pasteurizing or the use of chemical preservatives.
