A GREAT POLITICAL OPPORTUNITY WASTED There is encouragement to well wishers of the nation in the present remarkable political situation because of the evidence it gives that in a government of public opinion wrong is ultimately self defeating. A year ago it was generally believed that the Democratic party had a fair chance of success in the campaign of 1920. The opportunity, however, was one for an intelligent and patriotic leadership which did not exist. The organization of the Democratic party came within the control of a political and industrial adventurer, without a conviction other than that he ought to be president, and who was therefore willing to blay to any party need renovation. The Democratic party has many able, self respecting men of dignity and character and ability who are capable of basing the effort to secure control of government on principle rather than purely destructive and irresponsible tactics. Perhaps it is too much to expect that under the present primary system, which puts a premium on demagogy and corruption, such a leadership will come to the front. If so, that is a national misfortune, for the existence of two strong national political parties, capably led, is a national security. The opportunity, however, was one for an intelligent and patriotic leadership which did not exist. The organization of the Democratic party came within the control of a political and industrial adventurer, without a conviction other than that he ought to be president, and who was, therefore, willing to play to any element or resort to any method he believed would contribute to the advancement of his own ambitions. The program upon which this can-do entry entered was that of controlling the selection of delegates through use of the national Democratic organization machinery, of rallying the support of the radical elements of the country through the politicians at the head of the American Federation of Labor and the railway brotherhoods' Conference for Progressive Political action, and of besmirching the Republican national administration through the activities of senatorial investigating committees operating for partisan rather than public purposes. On the surface this combination of "silck" maneuvers looked like a "cinch." The use of the organization machinery created widespread resentment, which has flamed in the New York convention. The combination with the radicals in Congress for the purpose of embarrassing and defeating the Republican party only culminated in the La Follette candidacy, which bids fair to alienate from the Democratic party the very radical vote it was intended to annex. The substitution of a program of defamatory inquisition for one of getting before the country a definite legislative program by the Democrats and their radical allies in Congress disgusted the country because of the injustice and malice of the methods employed. It unexpectedly brought out facts concerning the very candidate in whose interest it was daunted, which made his nomination impossible but impressed the country with the facts that the inquisitors themselves were calous to impropriety and wrongdoing when committed by one of their own number. This was further demonstrated by the action of Democratic and radical senators in this case of the Senate's chief inquisitor. Meanwhile the lawless and violent spirit of the Senate Democratic-radical majority took hold of the Democratic party within the control of a political and industrial adventurer, without a conviction other than that he ought to be president, and who was, therefore, willing to play to any element or resort to any method he believed would contribute to the advancement of his own ambitions. Meanwhile the lawless and violent spirit of the Senate Democratic-radical majority took hold of the Democratic party itself. The contest for the presidential nomination assumed the character of a border brawl. Throughout the country, as in Washington, defamation low personalities and appeals to hatred and prejudice took the place of reason and deliberation. The wind was sowed in the Senate Chamber at Washington and the whirlwind was reaped in Madison Square Garden, New York. The pugilistic gun-toting, epithet hurling "leaders" of the national Democracy in the United States Senate have had their prototypes among the delegates and visitors to the New York convention. The result has been a revolting bedlam which has radiated the disgrace of the party from one end of the country to the other and has aroused internal hatreds from which the National Democracy may never recover. No political party and no political leadership ever makes a mistake in conducting itself in a manly, courageous, straightforward, dignified way. When the proceedings of the United States Senate are brought by a party leadership to the level of a barroom brawl it is not surprising that the national convention of that party seeks the same level, with both sides of the controversy handled by strong arm methods. It came from everywhere. That money was swindled out of people in every state, every county, every town and city. It didn't come from any particular region. It was taken from the folks who needed HOMES, from farmers who needed BARNS, from unfortunates here, there and everywhere who were actually in need of many, many things in the line of shelter. At $5000 each that money would have built 100,000 beautiful home would have provided shelter of an attractive character for half a million people. Make up your mind that the best investment you can make for yourself and your family is in a HOME. If you already have a Home you can help others get one by placing your surplus funds with the Building and Loan Association, at six per cent and you get your interest check regularly each quarter, without having to think of the details. They do the rest and HOMES.
