PAGE FOUR Anaheim Gazette ESTABLISHED 1870 ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY Henry Kuehel, Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION PER YEAR ... $1.50 SIX MONTHS ... $1.00 THREE MONTHS ... $ .50 Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter PARTY ORGANIZATION NECESARY TO GOOD GOVERNMENT The necessity of party organization to uphold party government as the means of obtaining best results for the country was asserted by President Coolidge in an address at the White House before the women students at the political campaign school conducted by the District of Columbia League of Republican Women Voters. As the President walked into the East room, where the gathering had assembled, followed by his secretary, C. Bascom Slemp, the women raised their right hands and repeated the following salute: "I pledge allegiance to Calvin Coolidge and to the Republican platform upon which he will stand in a government of honest integrity, with protection and progress for all." The President said: "Let me express my thanks to you for your pledge and your assurance of loyalty to party and to sound principles of government. I trust you are not disappointed that we can't meet on the outside where we not only might have had word together, but could have made a permanent memorial of your gathering by having a picture taken. But the weather has rest in Washington—it rests back in those homes that you really represent, and if your coming here is to have any effect it will be on account of the message that you take back, the inspiration that you receive here, which you can reflect in your own homes and in the various communities that you represent. Take back that message to your co-workers, wherever they may be, to organize themselves for the promotion of sound principles of government. "Now that means of course a practical application of that principle. I have been in public life for some time and I learned to say a long time ago that I was all through looking for ideal candidates for office. They don't exist and we have to make the best of what we have, for it is only in that way that we are able to make any progress. Now, get candidates that are just as near your ideals as possible. That is what we always want, and after you have done what you can in the way of selecting a candidate, get the best result and do what you can to support the principles that that candidate represents. "For, after all, if we are to promote good government, if we are to promote good principles, it must be by the support of those men and women that represent those principles. You know the principles that you represent the principles for which our party stands, and if they are to be promoted and translated into sound government it will be by electing men and women to office that represent that thought and that ideal. So organize and select as good candidates as you can, and after they are selected do what you can to elect them. In that method I am certain you will secure the very best results for yourselves and the most patriotic results for this America which we all love." The President said: "Let me express my thanks to you for your pledge and your assurance of loyalty to party and to sound principles of government. I trust you are not disappointed that we can't meet on the outside where we not only might have had word together, but could have made a permanent memorial of your gathering by having a picture taken. But the weather has made it necessary that you come in here and here perhaps I can give you a word of greeting even more conveniently than I could have on the outside. "I have noticed by your program that you must already be very well informed on all political subjects and all political activities. I am glad to welcome you because you represent a desire for party organization. I am glad to welcome you here in the White House, because it is first of all I hope an American home, and after that it is for the use of such social and official functions as are necessarily a part of the office which I hold. "It is necessary to have party organization if we are to have effective and efficient government. The only difference between a mob and a trained army is organization, and the only difference between a disorganized country and one that has the advantage of a wise and sound government is fundamentally a question of organization. Now I don't mean by that a narrow and bigoted partisanship, but one that recognizes the necessity to cooperate one with another, if we are in any way to secure the result that we desire. "That has been the model of our country from the time when it was established down to the present day. I don't know of anyone that has represented the real ideals of America any better than those of party loyalty, either on the one side or the other. Men of the type of Lincoln and Grant no less than the type of Cleveland and Wilson, have been loyal to their party, and desired to have party support and party government for the purpose of giving an efficient administration. So that whatever you may do in that direction I believe will be for the promotion of patriotic principles. "It is a great pleasure to have you here and to give you just this word of greeting. I hope you have seen a great deal of Washington, and a great deal of the public men here that are striving to do the best they can for their contry. If you have come here expecting to find the real seat of the principles for which our party stands, and if they are to be promoted and translated into sound government 'it will be by electing men and women to office that represent that thought and that ideal. So organize and select as good candidates as you can, and after they are selected do what you can to elect them. In that method I am certain you will secure the very best results for yourselves and the most patriotic results for this America which we all love." WHY NOT GET OFF THE TICKET? Senator Norris, of Nebraska, according to recent dispatches, announces that he does not believe particularly in party affiliation, but that the character of the man voted for is more important than the name of the party with which he is associated. Believing so he says he can not recommend to his friends that they vote, the straight Republican ticket next fall. Further, he wishes to abolish party responsibility and in its place establish personal responsibility. If Senator Norris were sincere in the position quoted above, then he was insincere when he entered the primary of the Republican party of Nebraska last month as a candidate for its nomination for United States senator. If Senator Norris is fair and square about this matter and believes as he says, then the first thing for him to do to prove his sincerity is to relinquish the Republican nomination for the Senate and run on an independent ticket. To continue to pose as a Republican nominee in view of his own statements is a fraud on the face of it, and his only motive can be the expectation that in so doing he will get thousands of voters to pick him out under a false assumption. Senator Norris as an individual has a right to believe and to advocate that party responsibility should end and personal responsibility take its place, but proclaiming such views he can not honestly and ethically continue to be the nominee of an organization to which he denies fealty. Senator Norris is in the position of seeking a job through the influence of some one he doesn't like and in whose interests he does not expect to work if he is given the position. It is his idea to look to an organized party to help elevate him to a job, and once that is secured, he kicks in the face those who made his success possible. Here we have a man seeking to climb to office under the cloak of an... party government for the purpose of giving an efficient administration. So that whatever you may do in that direction I believe will be for the promotion of patriotic principles. "It is a great pleasure to have you here and to give you just this word of greeting. I hope you have seen a great deal of Washington, and a great deal of the public men here that are striving to do the best they can for their country. GOVERNMENT PREPARES TO PAY SOLDIERS BONUS The enormous task of preparation for the payment of the soldiers bonus which was granted by congress Monday has been started. Based on an estimate of 30,000 record applications handled in a day, nine months will be necessary for the army to go through its records until January 1, payments should begin promptly on that day. Arrangements have been made to distribute application blanks through postoffices, the American Legion, various military headquarters and civil service. Finger prints will be required on the blanks for checking against the inky smudges made at the time of enlistment. Adjusted compensation is figured on a basis of $1 a day for home service and $1.25 a day for overseas. The first sixty days of service cannot be counted and a maximum of 500 days is the limit.
