A pool room license was ordered issued to the Derrick Billiard Parlor at La Habra, on recommendation of District Attorney and Sheriff. Fumigating licenses were ordered issued to Stovell Spraying & Fumigating Co. John L. Sommerville and FIREBUGS OPERATING AT HUNTINGTON BEACH Standard Oil Rig Destroyed and Attempts Made to Burn Others Firebugs operating in the Huntington Beach oil field, startlingly discovered by C. H. Grace of the Standard Oil company in the act of setting fire to the rig of Copeland well No. 11 of the Union oil company. Friday escaped, although Grace gave chase for several miles in the direction of Long Beach, toward which place the roughly dressed pair fled at top speed in an automobile. This revelation made by the police department of Huntington Beach Friday was the cause for the posting of several hundred men at the derricks of the various oil companies, some of whose wells are valued at more than $1,000,000. In connection with discovery of positive evidence that incendiaryists have been operating in the field, the Huntington Beach police also made known that three other fires in the field have been laid directly to the activities of firebugs. Thursday night the oil rig at the Standard Oil company's well F2, near Tenth and Lake streets, was destroyed. Quick work by the fire department prevented the destruction of the tools and engine house. A short time later Grace discovered a fuse smoldering at the base of the valuable Union Oil company well and extinguished it just in time to prevent a conflagration that might have spread to other wells nearby and eventually wiped out the field, if not checked. The two men watching the fuse dashed to a car and applied all speed possible to escape. Grace followed them, but a bearing in his car burned out and he was unable to catch them. He did not get a sufficient glimpse of President of the Valencia Orange Show at Anaheim, for $2500.00 on the Advertising fund to be used for advertising Orange County. The matter of awarding the bid for equipment for New County Jail, was continued to February 19, 1924, at 10 A.M. Map of tract No. 668 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. It was ordered that the curb line along Kileen Drive and Hickory street extending through tract No. 668 and tract No. 560 be established at a line twenty feet from center of said Kileen Drive and Hickory street. Map of tract No. 672 was ordered received by the Board and same referred to the City Engineer of the City of Newport Beach. A resolution was adopted in the matter of Road District Improvement No. 22. Grace followed them, but a bearing in his car burned cut and he was unable to catch them. He did not get a suffitlent glimpse of them to describe them accurately he said. The discovery of the firebugs followed the burning of the Belle of Montebello rig with the loss of $20,000 earlier in the week and an attempt to burn the Talbert well. The fire at the Talbert well was extinguished without damage. Grace said the smoldering fuse he found which in another moment would have converted the oil-saturated derick into a seething mass of flames, was made of old rags, with a number of matches at the end to provide sufficient blaze to set the base of the rig on fire. The fuse was taken to the police department. INEXPERIENCED A stingy man got a hot shot from his wife when he reproved her for taking a counterfeit bill. "I don't see how you were dumb enough to let a man pass counterfeit money on you." he roared. "Well, you don't let me see real money often enough to know the difference," she hurled back at him. Faith may move mountains, but it won't budge the income tax collector. A deed for right of way from D. Golns, et al, was accepted and declared a public highway. A deed for right of way from E. E. OVERDONE He was a very keen young business man. He had written on a square of paper to be stuck outside his office door. "Out to lunch. Back in half an hour." An afterthought struck him. He added the words "Been out 25 minutes already." PICTURE OF THRILLS Meaning, of Course, George Melford's "Flaming Barriers." Enough thrills for a full length serial is incorporated in the George Melford Paramount production of "Flaming Barriers". Jacqueline Logan, Antonio Moreno and Walter Hiers are featured players and in the portrayal of their respective roles they accomplish death defying feats such as would put fearless circus performers to shame. Miss Logan pilots an aeroplane over a flaming forest and drives a fire truck over a bridge enveloped by flames. Mr. Moreno has his hands full in quenching the fire as it licks its way toward a gasoline supply truck, throwing himself full length upon the flames with a soaked mattress, saving hundreds of lives of excursionists who are trapped by the conflagration. These and other thrills galore distinguish this production. HELPFUL WORDS From an Anaheim Citizen Is your back lame and painful? Does it ache especially after exertion?
