OPTION SECURED ON FACTORY SITES (Continued from page 1) As has been stated many times, the greatest obstacle for us to overcome is the price of land for factory sites. We have lost in the past two months, not one industry, but several, because of the high priced land. At this date we are negotiating with several industries who have almost demanded that we secure them a location. For two weeks the officers of the chamber of commerce and the industrial committee have been devoting hours to the solution of this problem. The plan has been weighed carefully, and if endorsed by a co-operative citizenry, means that Anaheim will be an industrial center. Without an exception, industries that have been coming to Anaheim seeking a location have declared that we have the best location for an industrial site of any city in Southern California. The 40 acres owned by the Anaheim Sugar company, just outside the city limits, is the most desirable tract to be found. It is in sight of the state highway, has paved streets with trackage for three transcontinental railroads (by the way, Anaheim is the only city in Orange County that has three transcontinental railroads, and only four other cities in the state are so situated). A four-inch gas main almost at the property line, with an abundance of water and ample sewerage facilities, within easy walking distance of the business center of the city. Is it any wonder that this tract is desirable? For over a month the officials of the chamber of commerce have been negotiating with the authorities in Los Angeles for this property and last week the chamber secured an option on this tract at a figure less than any individual can buy. means of transportation, cost of water, power, light, gas, climatic conditions, raw material, markets, taxes, support of the community, labor conditions, etc. All this information is essential. The secretary has been securing this information and has been diligently working on several sets of questions preparatory to making an industrial survey. The questions are now completed and in the hands of the printer. It will be only a few days until this survey will be undertaken, and again groups of men will be requested to give some time each day until it is completed. Fellow citizens, this will take the combined efforts of every organization, civic, religious, fraternal and cultural. No one can shirk the responsibility of this undertaking. The competition of all the cities of California is keen. We must either be an industrial slacker or an industrial go-getter. HARRY D. RILEY, President Anaheim Chamber of Commerce. THE EVOLUTION OF WAR Some years ago Lord Bryce was credited with saying, "We will end war, or war will end us." Will Irwin said that war is a game without a referee. If your enemy hits below the belt, it is up to you to hit said enemy one inch lower. The suicidal nature of armed conflict is magnified today by reason of the tremendous advances in chemical warfare. Edison has said that there is no way to prevent a flotilla of airplanes flying over London and in three hours dropping gases that would poison the entire population. Is it any wonder that this tract is desirable? For over a month the officials of the chamber of commerce have been negotiating with the authorities in Los Angeles for this property and last week the chamber secured an option on this tract at a figure less than any individual can buy it. Last Monday and Tuesday the industrial committee spent most of their time in working up a list of men who ARE or OUGHT TO BE interested in the welfare of Anaheim. To this committee, the industrial committee, wish to submit its plans for industrial Anaheim. The very excellent letter from a progressive citizen, and the splendid offer of Mr. Schumacher for the S. Q. R store are a good start. These men must feel what the chamber has known for months—that Anaheim to continue to grow with the strides of the past few years, must add to her already valuable assets, inudstries: All first-class industries, before locating, demand certain information—the belt, it is up to you to hit said enemy one inch lower. The suicidal nature of armed conflict is magnified today by reason of the tremendous advances in chemical warfare. Edison has said that there is no way to prevent a flotilla of airplanes flying over London and in three hours dropping gases that would poison the entire population. In spite of the operation of international laws regulating warfare, the evolution of the science of war has been toward the deliberate blotting out of whole areas or sections of nations. The Great War was an improvement in deviltry over former conflicts. The wars of the future will be far-different from the wars of the past; different even from the Great War. The non-combatant in war will not be safe in coming conflicts. In truth, there is no such thing as a noncombatant. Every man, woman or child of a nation at war is aiding in the fight. The professional fighters are but a small portion of the great armies. Without the nonprofessional reserves in factory and field there could be no victory. The German recognized this truth and were only carrying warfare to its logical conclusion in 67,000 Edison Partners Know That Their Money is Safe Their Income is Sure EDISON is backed by $186,000,000 devoted to essential industry EDISON has paid dividends With Interruption for over 14 ye EDISON is backed by $180,000,000 devoted to essential industry EDISON has paid dividends With Interruption for over 14 ye Invest in Edison for Sale Edison 7% Cumulative Preferred Sells for $105 per share cash or $106 per share on the easy-payment plan Southern California Edison Company 301 No. Main St. SANTA ANA CALIFORNIA Investment Dept., Edison Building, Los Angeles Kindly send me data re your 9 Pet Pre Name..... Edino way toanes flying hours drop on the en- of interfurfare, the war has crippling the civilian populations wherever possible. Military men and civilians working for peace are united today in calling to the attention of the nations this tremendous fact. On all sides we are brought face to face with the stark truth that war is madness. There may have been good wars. There may have been wars relatively harmless to the civilian populations. But such wars were fought before the day of science, invention and modern economic conditions. Such wars will never be experienced again by civilized nations. The slow infiltration of these facts into the mental processes of the peoples of the world today is responsible for the sincere efforts being made to prevent future conflicts. As Wells said, in "Mr. Brillling," there is nothing for one sane man to write to another these days save the salvation of mankind from war. ISOLATIONISTS? YES! Well meaning if misguided theorists who would get us into the European cockpit at whatever cost have invented a variety of opprobrious terms for those who hold different views and one of these, as ex-Senator Beveridge points out, is "isolationists." But how are we isolated? Commercially? No. Socially? No. Financially? No. In our charitable activities? No. We have given more than all the other natons to alleviate the pitiful aftermath of war. Our whole offending is that we hold politically aloof and keep out of Old World vendettas which are growing more hateful day by day. Our isolationism, so to call it, is much like that of a decent family, in the region where the McCoy and Hatfield feudists were pot-shooting each other as their chief interest in life, which was kind to both factions. And what Old World people would not rejoice from the depth of their hearts to be out of their whirlpool of intrigue and animosities, their poverty and misery and be remote and secure as we are? Why should we not preserve our detachment until the greed and rancor which have drenched a continent in blood have burned out, and the wrathful, passionate peoples across the sea are ready to dwell together in peace? These symptoms suggest weak kidneys. If so there is danger of delay. Weak kidneys get weaker fast. Give your trouble prompt attention. Doan's Pills are for weak kidneys. Your neighbors use and recommend them. Ask your neighbor! Read this Anaheim testimony: J. A. Laffoon, retired farmer, 417 Elm St., says: "Doan's Pills are an old stand-by with me and I don't know how I would have made out without them. I got so bad off with kidney trouble, I could hardly keep going. My back ached constantly and made it hard for me to do any stooping of lifting work. My kidneys were out of order, too. I used Doan's Pills and they just suited my case. Doan's soon put me on my feet. The backache let up and my kidneys were regulated." Price 60c. at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Pills — the same that Mr. Laffoon had. Foster-Milburn Co., Mfrs., Buffalo, N.Y. NATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE SCHOOL 4004 So. Figueroa, Los Angeles.
