ALASKAN DEVELOPMENT STRIDES TOLD BY BONE This year probably will stand out in Alaskan history as the most notable in territorial history, Governor Scott C. Bone declared in his annual report. Not only was development pushed at unprecedented speed, he said, with record production of wealth, but there was a hitherto unknown success in "making known Uncle Sam's last remaining frontier and concentrating general attention upon it." Governor Bone listed President Harding's visit and those of preceding and accompanying delegations of Congress members and press representatives as among the assets of incalculable value which had been added to the territory. Recommendations made in his report for 1922 were renewed by Governor Bone, among them being: The placing of the affairs of Alaska under one department head in Washington. An appropriation of $300,000 to supplement a fund of $150,000 heretofore authorized for the erection of a capitol or administrative building. Adequate provision for operation and upkeep of the Alaska railroad, and for the building of branch lines and spurs. An appropriation of $1,500,000 annually for the building of roads and trails and provisions for roads into Mount McKinley and Mount Katmal parks. The vesting in the Department of Commerce of complete authority over the fisheries of Alaska. Improved facilities for tourist travel, by putting two vessels of the United States Shipping in Alaskan northern markets the past year. But that is not enough to satisfy the Florida growers—or the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The department vouches for the character of the dasheen, pronouncing it an excellent substitute for the potato in many respects, and superior in some ways. It is drier than the potato, and has 50 per cent more food value per pound. It can be prepared in almost any way the potato can, and is fine for stuffing chickens, turkeys, etc. There is a considerable demand for it among the Orient, where it has been used for many years. The tops of the plant may be used as "greens" or for salads. It is hard to introduce any new article for food. It took the potato itself centuries tomake its way into the European diet, and it is only within the last ten years that Germany has made much use of the tomato. It may take a decade or two to acquaint the American public with this new starch vegetable. Such matters move faster, however, than they used to. The only trouble is, the supposedly conservative farmer is always ahead of his supposedly up-to-date city market. OWN YOUR HOME The Division of Building and Housing, Department of Commerce, has issued a valuable booklet on home ownership. It is written by Dr. John M. Gries and James S. Taylor, with a forceful foreword by Secretary Hoover. The booklet discusses the financing, selecting the location for and the planning of the home, and is the result of expert opinion from many sources. Consolidation all law-enforcing service. A colonization plan to be operative in connection with the Alaska railroad. Allotment of at least one-half of the net revenues derived from the Pribilof islands to the general fund of the territory. DASHEEN, THE NEW VEGETABLE Now comes word through the United States Department of Agriculture that the vegetable, dasheen, has gained a real foothold in Florida. This declaration will be of considerable interest to County Treasurer J. C. Joplin and those of his friends who, a few years ago, enjoyed dasheen cooked in various ways. The county treasurer grew a quantity of dasheen in his back yard, demonstrating the fact that the county's climate is favorable to the production of the vegetable. The federal authorities in a bulletin set forth that Jacksonville has taken kindly to the new vegetable, offering it for sale all over the city and using it in large quantities. In 1920, 461 out of 1,000 American families owned their homes. The auto has given an impetus to home ownership, which is one of the finest of instincts, and one which makes for better citizenship. The Department of labor surveys show that in cities apartment houses are almost superseeding separate homes. The auto and suburban residence is the solution of that problem. The booklet may be obtained of the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, for 5 cents. ROUGH ECONOMICS "Doesn't this poker game promote idleness in Crimson Gulch?" "Not as a rule," answered Cactus Joe. "A few of the boys manage to do the winning. The rest of us have to work extra hard for enough to sit in the game." ONE HELP "Tending soda bar is not so exciting, Jake, I take it." "Not so exciting, but I don't have to listen to people's troubles." Home is a place where you have to spend some of your time when the car is in the repair shop.
