Does he mean to roast them? We have been presented with a sweet potato brown on the "sand patch" of Jonas Dyer, which kicked the beam at seven and on-half pounds. As there is a rivalry among our farmers as to whose land can produce the largest "spuds" we beg to acknowledge the receipt of larger ones next week. In describing the articles on exhibition at the pavilion in Los Angeles the Star says that a banana tree, two years old with bunch of unripe fruit which was grown upon the premises of Elijah Workman, Esq., of that city is the first tree of the kind ever brought into bearing in this section—That is a mistake, on the elegant grounads of Dr. Hardin, can be seen two large banana trees each bearing a bunch of the delicious fruit which has nearly all ripened. If the fruit which is somewhat smaller than that grown in the tropics, but equally delicious could be made to dipen about one month earlier, so as to escape the cold winds which now prevail at night we have no doubt it would grow as large here as in the tropics. Arnold has moved his cigar factory to his new place of residence on West Center street, in the Boege addition and gives notice to the public that he will continue the manufacture of the choicest cigars, from the best of tobacco. Mr. Arnold makes a fine cigar and reports the demand for his goods exceeds his capacity to supply. That is the best endorsement of his cigars. Try one and you will be convinced. Theo. FULLERTON OFFICERS DENY HAVING BEATEN PADILLA Mexican Incendiary Gets a Life Sentence in the Pen. Statements by Fortuna Padilla, arson suspect on trail in Sacramento for murdering ten Japanese children, that he was brutally beaten by Fullerton officers while he was under arrest in Orange County, were emphatically denied by Sheriff Jernigan and Art Fells, city marshal of Fullerton. Padilla, according to Sacramento dispatches declared Fullerton officers cruelly beat him to force him to affix his signature to a statement purporting to read that if he were taken from Fresno and Sacramento he would divulge information concerning alleged incendiary fires in the two cities. He also charged that Sacramento officers mistreated him in an ecort to wring a confession from him. "Statements that Padillo was mistreated while a prisoner in Orange county are absolutely false," Sheriff Jernigan declared, when asked concerning Padilla's story in the county jail. "Padilla received the best possible treatment while in the county jail. He also received excellent treatment the weesterly prolongation of the center line of 5th Street as shown on the map of the town of Buena Park, thence Easterly along said center line to the point of beginning. do hereby respectfully petition and pray that the lands included within such boundaries shall be organized as a Sanitary District, under and pursuant to the provisions of an Act of the Legislature of the State of California, entitled: "An Act to provide for the formation, Government, Operation, Reorganization, Dissolution and Alteration of Boundaries of Sanitary Districts in any part of the State, for the Construction of sewers, septic tanks and other Sanitary Purposes; the acquisition of property thereby; the calling and conducting of elections in such districts; the assessment, levy, collection, custody and disbursement of taxes therein; the issuance and disposal of the bonds thereof and the determination of their validity and making provision for the payment of such bonds and the disposal of their proceeds; to empower sanitary boards to make and enforce sanitary regulations and providing penalties for violations thereof." and approved May 17th, 1923.
