IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper 50 Years Ago this Week From Gazette of October 25, 1873 Judge Wiseman of San Bernardino has leased Mr. Henry Bremmerman's vineyard, and will hereafter reside in Anaheim. He is a lawyer of acknowledged ability, and will no doubt practice his profession. Mr. J. K. Truffree announces that he will be at his office in Davis' store to receive pay for wood taken from the company's land. Those who intend to plant vines this season will please read the advertisement of J. W. Clark, who is prepared to furnish the best varieties of cuttings at low rates. Read the advertisement of Goodman and Rimpau, and then go and look at their magnificent new stock of goods. It certainly is the best and most carefully selected stock ever brought to Anaheim. We take great pleasure in calling attention to the new firm of L. Halberstadt & Co., lumber dealers. Mr. Halberstadt is so well known through his connection with Laugenberger, Blochman & Co., the outgoing firm, that comment in regard to his business qualifications is entirely unnecessary, still we can not refrain from a word of commendation, and bespeak for him that patronage which his Judge Kohler, Counter charges of assault and battery were made by the belligerents, and the judge decided that the Chinaman was the aggressor and mulched him to the tune of $30. On Friday, October 24, there was incorporated in the city of Los Angeles, The Southern California Mutual Aid Association, with the following list of trustees: J. Q. A. Stanley; Thomas A. Garey and L. M. Holt of Los Angeles. Geo. C. Gibbs of San Gabriel Mission, J. H. Gray of El Monte; J. E. McComas and J. A. Walker of Compton; C. Gridley and Richard Melrose of Anaheim; S. L. Bequette of Los Nietos and E. G. Brown of Riverside. The objects of the Association are to render pecuniary aid to the families of deceased members; said families will be entitled to as many dollars as there are members in the Association at the time of death of member. Each member must pay annually to the company from $3 to $10, and an assessment of one dollar whenever a member dies. Company will soon be in full working order. Mr. Haswell intends wintering with us, and during his stay will offer his professional services to anyone who may need the services of a lawyer. Mr. L. M. Holt of the Rural Press leaves for San Francisco on the next steamer. He will return in about three weeks and take up his residence in Los Angeles. Mr. Frangel of Gallatin has purchased some twon lots in Santa Ana. Mr. A. G. Beebe is building an addition to the Fairview School house. We are glad to learn that Dr. Taylor is recovering from the effects of an accident which befell him last Saturday. The Rev. E. B. Kellogg and wife of London, Ohio, arrived in Anaheim some days ago. They will remain here all winter. Our enterprising friend, Mr. Peter Richards, has purchased a superb piano, and will place it in his hall, for the use of theatrical and concert troupes, etc. Mr. Albert Kurtz and sister removed to Los Angeles on Thursday. We have no doubt that at some future day they will return to Anaheim and make it their home. 25 Years Ago this Week From Gazatte of October 27, 1898 The Stars and Stripes were raised on the flag pole surmounting the new tower at the school house for the first time on Tuesday. The flag pole is surmounted by a gilt ball and is 102 feet high. Mrs. J. W. Ballard of Santa Ana and Miss Phelu Jones will be at the residence of Mrs. McKinley in this city tomorrow (Friday) afternoon to organize a section of the Ebell Society. A general invitation is extended to all ladies interested to attend. The subject of starting a reading class will also be discussed at the meeting. Mrs. Joseph Backs visited at Santa Anita on Monday and was the guest of Mrs. Richard Krebs. A barbecue was participated in by a number of the latter lady's friends on that day in honor of her birthday. Mrs. Backs returned home on Tuesday. Moses A . Remick was on Tuesday granted a divorce from his wife, Jenile S. Remick. She recently sued him for $300 alimony, but Judge Ballard decided that she was entitled to nothing. William Schulte, the well known Orangethorpe Avenue horticulturist, was in town yesterday on a short business mission. Rev. Stone went to San Diego on Thursday to attend the Presbyterian Synol. Sam Federman was in town from Los Angeles yesterday attending to business interests. Miss Estella Lewis will entertain her friends at a Hallowe'en Party to be given at the Del Campo next Monday evening. It promises to be a very enjoyable affair. Fred Ahlborn informs us that the Turners contemplate giving an entertainment and ball on Thanksgiving time of death member. Mrs. Perdomo, widow of Dr. Perdomo and her young son Clearence departed some days ago for Denver to visit with relatives. John Dauser is taking care of the place during her absence. Coleman Travis, a well known business man of Orange and Miss Zoraida Yorba the accomplished sister of Don David Yorba were married on Wednesday last at Don David's residence at Yorba. The newly married couple will reside at Orange. L. Dwight Mercereau, of Westminster was married some days ago to Miss Edna Lewis of Santa Ana at the home of Mrs. Lewis in Santa Ana, Rev. J. T. Hopkins of the Presbyterian church officiating. The first anniversary ball given by the city band occurs at the opera house this evening. The grand march begins at 5 o'clock. Mrs. Bloss has opened a restaurant in the Metz building on Los Angeles street where she will make a specialty of home cooking. She calls the restaurant "The Maine" and asks the hungry wayfarer in search of a square meal to "Remember The Maine." Prof. Franz Nobelung has composed a hymn entitled the "Land of Liberty Hymn," which he has dedicated to the soldier boys of Company L. He has presented the music to the Anaheim band on the occasion of next public appearance of the band. E. D. Waffle the well known livery man of Santa Ana and a former resident of this city was married last week to Mrs. Dr. Howe of that town. The newly married couple left for the Temiscal canyon to spend their honeymoon and on their return will take up their residence in Santa Ana. George Smith was over from Santa Ana on Tuesday having driven over to see how the Mother Colony was getting along since his six weeks absence in the Hawaiian Islands, whence he returned last week. Mr. Smith says Honolulu is a city of 40,000 inhabitants and has since the American occupation taken on a spirit of activity that permeates all business classes. Mme. Modjeska was taken ill last Friday evening in Chicago and had to abandon her repertoire for the week. Her illness is ascribed to the sudden change in climate and her friends are greatly worried. An entertainment will be given at the Placentia school house on the evening of Friday, November 4th, the proceeds of which will be used for the purchase of an organ for the school. A sum of $500.00 was deposited on street work. The appointment of H. C. Kester, Director of Newhope Drainage District was ordered rescinded. B.F. Crutchfield was appointed Director of the Newhope Drainage District. A deed for right of way from John G. Launer, et al., was accepted and declared a public highway. The deed from the La Habra Valley Land & Water Company to the County of Orange was accepted and ordered placed on record. The Purchasing Agent was ordered to purchase two automobiles for the road department. It was ordered that Assessment No. 828, in Book 1, page 115 of the 1922-23 Assessment Roll, assessed to C. A. Price, be cancelled, for reason that same is a double assessment. Fumigating licenses were ordered issued to Harry Ramond, Jerry Williams, and G. C. Spray, and spraying license ordered issued to Geo. M. Bartley. Map of Tract No. 582 was ordered received by the Board and same referred to the City Planning Company, of Santa Ana. The Chairman was authorized to approve bond on Map of Tract No. 269, and same was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. The sum of $500.00 was deposited on street work. A Resolution was passed and adopted, praying for the formation of a public Highway Lightning District at La... Mme. Guinn, who was one of the first teachers in Anaheim will be present and deliver an address. Prof. Greeley, County School Superintendent and W. M. McFadden who was many years ago County School Superintendent of Los Angeles county, will deliver short addresses, and there will be a literary and musical program. Horace Green is here from Long Beach building an addition to Mr. Stephens' residence on North Street. He will be on the job two or three weeks. State Controlled Colgan has completed a statement of great interest to taxpayers of California. Among other things it gives the grand total value of assessed property in and the indebtedness of each county. San Francisco leads with a total assessment of $352,633,515, while second on the list is Los Angeles with $93,256,089. Orange has $10,855,800, Riverside, $12,349,836. San Bernardino $16,050,118. San Diego, $20,215,200. The total value of assessed property in the counties is $1,130,885,697 and the total county indebtedness is $4,035,512. received by the Board and same referred to the City Planning Company, of Santa Ana. The Chairman was authorized to approve bond on Map of Tract No. 269, and same was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. The sum of $500.00 was deposited on street work. A Resolution was passed and adopted, praying for the formation of a public Highway Lighting District at Laguna Beach, and setting forth the names and boundaries of said proposed district. Protests against the formation of said Lighting District to be heard November 13th, 1923, at 11:00 A.M. at the Chamber of said Board, in the Court House. Publication to be made in the Laguna Life. The report of the Harbor Commission was accepted. Canvass of Water Works District No. 2 was made and said District declared organized. Plans and specifications, as presented by Frank Benchley, for construction of a Maintenance House for Road Foreman in the City of Fullerton, were accepted and adopted.
